    3. Hi Eva The only thing extra on the one I recently sent for was the parish where the two people came from. Everything else I could get from the Scottish People website for £6 for 30 pages rather than £10 per copy of opr. Not exactly a cheap way of finding out - but at least it gave me a possible parish for their birth. 2. Could SKS please tell me what information will be on an OPR marriage record? John McKellar married Elizabeth Gibb on Oct. 4, 1829 in High Church Paisley. I found John's death record July 26, 1873 which told me that his father was James McKellar and his mother was (no first name) Robertson. I have been unable to find this recorded at all and I'm wondering if the name Robertson is completely wrong or perhaps James married twice. I thought that if I ordered John's marriage, perhaps his parents names would be on the certificate. Any leads would be appreciated, Eva

    3. Hello Julie, Many thanks indeed for the results of your index searching. Think Andrew must have gone back to join the wee green Leprechauns! The Mary Miller aged 20yrs,Greenock district 442 is one I checked on my last visit to Register House in Edinburgh, just managed to finish the reel, when the bell rang! There was no relative on it. If you have time I would be grateful if could look up the following. Mary Miller, age 22yrs, Greenock District,436, Book/ED 37, Page 13, Line 2. Mary McMillan, age 25yrs,Greenock District,442, Book/ED,104,Page 9, Line 12 Mary Mcmillan, age 22yrs,Greenock District,438, Book/ED, 56, Page 11, Line 20 Family Christian names were, Andrew, Mary, Agnes, John, Margaret, James, Robert. Maybe the Scottish naming pattern will be in her line? Kind regards, Jean.

    3. Hi David, Thanks for your help, Yes I do try to get the films and read some others as well. Have done a bit of transcribing from Ayrshire films. Costs in NZ are similar to Aus but we have to wait for them to come from Aus. 3-6 weeks. By then you have almost forgotten what you wanted from Film.. These children are new to me, I'm having trouble tracking the family down. Mine seem to move all the time, coalminers or quarriers.. Will need to dig a bit deeper. I am a bit afraid I am going to find "born IRELAND." I haven't been there yet.. SWEENEY has lots of researchers, but ours has always been "IE" on the end. There is a mystery in there somewhere. I think my safest bet is to contact Des Garrity since he has the index of these applications - after all, isn't that why we index things?? Thanks again - Phyllis

    3. You could make your like easier and ask Des Garrity to look up the index for you. Himself and a team of volunteers indexed Glasgow Poor Relief records and they have the index on computer at Glasgows Mitchel Library. Des does free look ups of the index and for a fee will send you a copy of the actual entry. He has a website..which unfortunately I just tried to access and got the message `forbidden`. You could try e.mailing him at desgarrity@blueyonder.co.uk Anne > I'm wondering if there is someone on the Renfrew List or the Ayrshire List who is familiar with the LDS filmings for Glasgow City Poor Relief applications. It appears that there are 174 films covering this subject, divided into 6 "districts". In the "film notes" on the LDS Family History Library Catalogue, there is no indication as to what areas these six districts comprise, i.e. I don't know if they relate to any of the actual Parishes of Glasgow ( i.e. 644/#). 3. Hello Olive, don't know if you got the exact location, i can only give you an approximate idea. GLENDALE PLACE on a modern day map appears to be on the South side of Braids Road near where it meets south end of Carriagehill Drive. (1901 cens 573-1 book 17, area covered - All Braids Rd. including St. Mary's Terrace in this road, GLENDALE PLACE, Carriagehill House, Garden Nursery & Offices, Carriagehill Starchworks Offices, both sides of Carriagehill Drive, including South Park, Barnscroft, High Carriagehill, Primrose Bank, Brodie Park Lodge and all ROSEBERRY PLACE) ----------------- ROSEBERRY PLACE, also on modern day map, appears to have been between Braids Rd. & Mary St. (nearer latter) on the West side of Neilston Rd. (1901 cens 573-1 book 18, area covered - West side of Carriagehill Street from ROSEBERRY PLACE northwards, all Mary St, the west side of Neilston Rd, Mansfield Place, Bute Place, Gushet House, 59 Causeyside St, Alexandra Place, and east side of Calside to Stock St.) Please note that Neilston Rd. is now a continuous road south (from "Gushet House") to Potterhill - Carriagehill STREET was that part of it from Rowan St. southwards. If you go to > http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ < you'll be able to view the area - though it's a wee bit earlier than you need. Hope you can understand what i've written! Jack (who was born at 5 Mary St.)

It lets you know about the Glasgow Workhouses, where they were situated and how they were run etc. As you heard in another email the lists of inmates was being transcribed. There were partly finished lists for Barony and Govan I tried to open the Barony list tonight ..unsuccessfully. ..I have been on the site a long time ago. However give it another try in 24 hours or so. The address is as follows: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Barony/Barony.html If the actual lists have moved on to the Mitchelllibrary.org/ site......and at least you can ask where the workhouse lists are kept nowadays??!! 3. Irene, I know the feeling. I have been to England twice in recent years and spent most of the second visit in bed sick. I do most of my research via the LDS Family History Centres, viewing their films as they come in. It certainly helps to keep the overall costs down to a minimum. I do not know the costs in New Zealand, but here in Australia it costs A$6.00 to order in a film and you have access to it for one month. Still I am sure that you are already aware of this. >From: "Irene Polkinghorne" <polk@ihug.co.nz> >Subject: Re: [Renfrew] 1841 and 1851 Census - Gemmell > >As they get nearer to the 20th century it gets harder , especially if you >are not in Scotland. >I have had 3 trips but my money has all gone now and am retired so broke >constantly, very expensive hobby this.. > >Irene in New Zealand. Their daughter was DOUGLAS HAY who married GEORGE BARR. There is on the IGI a Gavin Pinkerton who married an Elizabeth Barr in Abbey, Paisley in 1780. I am floundering amongst Pinkertons and Barrs!!! I also have a MARY MCKINLAY ARBUCKLE, daughter of THOMAS ARBUCKLE and AGNES GALT who married a relative of mine MATTHEW HOUSTON HAY (descendent of Adam Hay and Agnes Pinkerton) in 1900 in Dreghorn. Can you see any connections? Best wishes, Jeannette

    2. Yes, we went to Scotland and were able to find and meet "living" relatives! They didn't know they had family in the States and my mom didn't know that she had living relatives in Scotland. Thought they had all died. Did get alot of info on my mom's side of the family - Young. Unfortunately, we are at a standstill on the Gemmell side. Have info on my g-grandfather, but do not have his siblings names, etc. Same with my g-grandmother. Her name was Maria Vance, b. 1865 in Antrim, Ireland. Can't find any info on her either. The biggest area of concern is of my grandfather's youngest brother. His name was Alexander, also, born either 1900 or 1901 in Greenock, Scotland. Can't find anything on him at all. The story goes that my g-grandmother, Maria, left my g-grandfather when she became pregnant. Do not know if the boy was actually born in Scotland or in Ireland. She may have left for her homeland. Any help you or anyone else can provide is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Sherrie Brown
