Dawn Unfortunately the 1841 film of the Street Index does not include Greenock, which may make it difficult to pin down the area. Below is the entry on the LDS web site. ~~~ The street indexes for the 1841 census include the localities of North Leith, South Leith, Cannongate and St. Cuthbert in Edinburgh and Barony, Govan and Gorbals in Glasgow. ~~~~~ The 1851 Index does, but there are 3 different areas. ~~~~~~ The street indexes for the 1851 census include Edinburgh, Leith, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Urquhart, Inveresk, Musselburgh, Fisherrow, New Monkland, Airdrie, Newton Braes, Coatbridge, Dundee, East, Middle and West Greenock, and Paisley's Middle Parish, Abbey, High and Middle Low. ~~~~~ Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dawn Ellis" <dawnsellis@earthlink.net> To: <SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2003 1:30 PM Subject: [Renfrew] New lister's questions... > Hi all, How would I find out which part of Greenock 4 Nicolson St. > was in for the 1841 census? >
West parish...actually that does help. That confirms that they were in the west or old parish. Hi Dawn I don't know if this helps or hinders. I just found a Coils family living at 31 Nicholson St. West Parish on the 1901 census. Every success in your research, Gene
Would anyone on the list have access to the 1901 census for Paisley Renfrew? I would like to have a look up if it isn't too much bother. Thank you Gail Sidney by the Sea B.C. Canada
Hi all, How would I find out which part of Greenock 4 Nicolson St. was in for the 1841 census? Where can I find MI's for Greenock? Thanks very much, -- Dawn Ellis dawnsellis@earthlink.net http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dawnellis All emails scanned for viruses before leaving my machine! I'm a TMG user!
Hello Julie, Very many thanks indeed for all the info and your expert help with the index. The last entry may well fit and will check it out at the LDS here in Oz. Kind regards, Jean.
I missed the earlier question, but go for film no. 103754. District 468 is right at the end of this film, after the Public Institutions (which include Paisley Poor House). Also, if you want to trawl the neighborhood and look for related families, don't forget Abbey (film no. 103747) which is right next door and also part of Paisley "town". Regards Bob Tom's Paisley question as an example, >"Where do I find the census record that would list their home address and > > where the people were born? > > > > Paisley District 468N Book 1 Page 6." > > click on Place Search. On the next page, type in Paisley. Two choices >will come up, click on Scotland, Renfrew, Paisley. On the next page, click >on Paisley Census, next page click on the blue highlighted Census returns >for Paisley (parish 573), 1841-1891, at the top of the next page click on >the View Film Notes. Julie Dufault, Thank you so very much for you very easy to follow directions. Monday I'll be on my way to my local LDS Family research Center here in Bradenton, Florida to order those films. Would you happen to know a Christina Anderson Sinclair born March 18, 1868 in Paisley who moved to New Hampshire? Parent's John Sinclair & Sarah Keith. I found a mention in one of my mother's notes about her mothers sister living in NH. My mother didn't mention a married name or town? It was Mom's way of keeping me occupied even after she's gone? Tom Thompson
To order in any of the microfilms of the censuses, go to www.familysearch.org , click on the Library tab at the top of the page, from there click on Family History Library Catalog, just below the tab. To use Tom's Paisley question as an example, "Where do I find the census record that would list their home address and > where the people were born? > > Paisley District 468N Book 1 Page 6." click on Place Search. On the next page, type in Paisley. Two choices will come up, click on Scotland, Renfrew, Paisley. On the next page, click on Paisley Census, next page click on the blue highlighted Census returns for Paisley (parish 573), 1841-1891, at the top of the next page click on the View Film Notes. You now have a list of all the censuses that are available on microfilm for Paisley. Scroll down the page to find the films for 1851, there are 5 to choose from. If it has (another filming) then the same material was re-filmed at a later date. In Tom's case, the district he is looking for is 468N, so film 1042367 or 103754 will have the entry that he wants. Once the film has been requested and comes in for viewing, look for Book/ED 1, page 6 and enjoy! I should make note here, I have found that the microfilm/fiche numbers given in the online catalog often drop the first zero of the film number. You need 7 digits to make up the film number. Want to know which film you need for OPR entries? Find the birth or marriage you are interested in, in the IGI, scroll down to the bottom of the page, to the right of the Batch number will be the film number, unless this is a Patron Submission. If you find that the film number also has an item number, you can use the film/fiche Search to find out what else is on that microfilm. Good Luck, Julie Dufault Merrimack, New Hampshire, USA
I had reason to contact Craig Seath, a Seath researcher, who was quite knowledgeable - you might want to try him - here is a message he posted on a bulletin board: Craig J Seath c_j_seath@msn.com Apr 27, 2000 08:14 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland Love the site. I am carrying out (along with far and distant relatives) a one name study covering all the Seath family in Fife. If anybody has any information about anyone with the name Seath in their family, please do not hesitate to contact me. So far we have had contact from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US and all contacts have proved to be directly connected (even up to 5th cousins in Australia who emigrated (honestly) in 1855 aboard the ship Melbourne). Don, did you just receive a e-mail from me? Myk computer has been acting up and it "glitched". J.
Hi Don, The place seems to be in limbo. I can't pin point a location for these Campbells - hence my brick wall! I DO know that it was a port area (because the Widow Young's husband was a seaman and "lost at sea" c 1844 - she and her small son lived on some Campbell property and Wm. Campbell saw her when they were being evicted and married her - not on the spot of course) Wm Campbell was a mason or owned a quarry. His son, John Graine Campbell, b Scotland 1847 - my gggf- studied law in Scotland but became a mason in this country so he had to know something about stonemasonary(sp?).I think the Port of Glasgow is probably a likely place. William Campbell invented (or had a patent on) the diamond studded saw which is now used to cut stone. It a longer story but the above are the only real clues I have. I know about John Graine Campbell because I found him and his family in the 1880 Parker County Texas Census and his age was listed as 22 - hence the birth year of 1847. Of course that could vary by a year depending upon month in which he was born. Alll that I know about the Campbell's is based on tales my Mother told me. Its a great family mystery and I am determined , brick wall or no. I had hoped that maybe each county (shire) had Electoral/Voters Rolls - I would pay a fee to anyone to search. The really infurating thing about all this is that I know that I have seen the name William Shaw Campbell (before I knew his name) on a census but can't locate it forthe life of me. This is a lot for a simple answer isn't it? Maybe you willhave an inspiration! Warm regards, Juanita
Juanita, Can you give me a place for William Shaw Campbell around 1840? Thanks, Don
Don, what dates are Electoral Voters Rolls? Does each county (shire) have such a list? I am looking for a William Shaw Campbell around 1840. Appreciate any info re availability of these recordss. Juanita Patterson Mobile, ALl
