David, can't help with the farm location, but there is a Coustonholm Road next to Pollokshaws (East) railway station at present. This is about 6 miles from Paisley. Jack - Paisley ============================== The address given is either "Custon Home" or "Auston Home", Paisley, Pollockshaws. It is described as a farm with a big apple orchard. Can anyone help me identify "Custon" or "Auston" Home. regards, David Hawgood. London, England.
Hi Lynda Since ther are only a samll number of McMurrich on the index for both East and West Renfrew I thought I might as well send the lot The order of things is. Name; age; Parish; District; Book; Page; Line in East Renfrew Agnes; 5; Abbey; 470; 1; 9; 3 Alexander; 14; Paisley; 466; 1; 17; 14 Catherine; 30; Abbey; 470; 1; 9; 2 George; 26; Abbey; 470; 1; 9; 1 Janet; 20; Abbey; 470; 7; 16; 9 Janet W; 1; Abbey; 470; 1; 9; 5 Jean; 3; Abbey; 470; 1; 9; 4 In West Renfrew Ann; 21; Greenock; 440; 83; 8; 15 Catherine; 38; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; 12; 2 Catherin; 16l; Port Glasgow; 16; 446/1; 11; 12; 4 George; 67; Houston & Killellen; 447; 5; 4; 1 Hugh; 4; Port Glasgow; 446/1' 11; 12; 8 Jane; 6; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; 12; 7 Janet; 57; Houston & Killellen; 447; 5; 4; 2 Jessie; 30; Greenock; 433; 5; 12; 7 John; 18; Houston Killellen; 447; 1; 3; 5 John; 18; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; 12; 3 Marion; 11; Houston & Killellen; 447; 5; 4; 3 Mathew; 30; Greenock; 433; 5; 12; 6 Robert; 9; Port Glasgow; 446/1; ; 6 Samuel; 48; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; 12; 1 Samuel; 1; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; ; 9 Thomas D; 2; Greenock; 433; 5; 12; 8 William; 12; Port Glasgow; 446/1; 11; 12; 5 As you will see your couple do not appear to be there although if you have the DoB of the children you may be able to work out if any of these others are related. The fact that they married in H & K and Robert died there may only mean that he returned home for his death. Have you got the death certifictate? I can't, of course vouch for the accuracy of the index. However, I did get this from the Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS, so I should think it would be OK. I have also the 1861 for East Ayshire but there are no McMurrich's at all. It might be worth trying Lanarkshire, particularly Glasgow, as it is not that far away for work. Kind regards Mike

Hello listers, I am new to this list. I wonder if there is an index for the 1851 census for Renfrewshire? If so, could sks please do a look-up for me? Hugh Donnelly/O'Donnell 50; wife Mary 43; dau. Annie 4; & any other family members. Living in Gourock or Greenock. Any help greatly appreciated. Bernard Clarke Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
On 21 July 1856 William Campbell King age 9 left Scotland to go to Australia (and later on to New Zealand and is an ancestor of my wife). His grandfather gave him a little testament with an inscription telling him to remember he is of Scot descent and entitled to wear the Campbell tartan. The address given is either "Custon Home" or "Auston Home", Paisley, Pollockshaws. It is described as a farm with a big apple orchard. Can anyone help me identify "Custon" or "Auston" Home. regards, David Hawgood. London, England.
Dear Mike Sorry If I am being a pain, could you just have one more wee look at the 1841/1851 census. I have recieved an email from someone since I sent my original message who may also have connections with this family, and we know that Robert McMurrich and wife Emely were married in Houston & Killellan in 1828 and Robert was still there when he died in 1874. The children were: John Donald Emelia James Robert Janet They were all born in Houston & Killellan between 1827 & 1842 I would be interested if they did show, to know where Robert's wife Emley hailed from. Hello Mike, If it isn't too much trouble would you please do another lookup on the index? For a Robert JAAP - if he was still alive he would be in his late 60's (b 1785). His wife's name was Honora or Nora. I'm pretty sure they both died before civil registration - I couldn't find them on the death indexes. Thank you Win MacKenzie
Hi everyone - I need advice and help concerning my ancestor James Waddell. He is buried in Ohio, USA. and on his headstone is: James Waddell, born 8/15/1798, Pollock Shaws, Eastwood Parish, Renfrewshire, Scotland. I will be coming to Scotland in late July, and am asking where to begin my search for James and his family. He also had at least one brother, Robert, who was born in 1792. Thanks for your help. Hello fellow listers, Several times on the list I have seen a discussion about the British Census on cd's available through the LDS site. As yet I am undecided about buying them as it may or may not help me out with my searches. However, I have not seen any discussion concerning the Pedigree Resource Files that are also available through the LDS site,so I wonder what is on them in addition to what I see on the site? Currently I have a brick wall regarding an ancestor who is listed on there and wonder if someone has this cd (# 21). My relative is Richard Teasdale (pin # 587706).I had no problem with that until I looked at his father's (my great-great-grandfather) will in the surrogate court and found out that this son is also known as Richard Bilby! If anyone has this cd could they please do a look up for me so that I may find out more about this part of my ancestry? Please contact me direct at wehc@sprint.ca. Thank you so very much. Kind regards Elizabeth

Hello List Can anyone tell me what a starchworker was ? I have looked on several sites for old occ. but can't find anything. Was it anything to do with the cotton mills in Paisley or something different altogether? I have an old map of Paisley and there is a Glenfield starchworks on it near to George Street which is where John CAMPBELL lived in 1891. I would like to know more about it if anyone has any info or can point me to a website. Thankyou Mary --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi all, Just quick question. On my excursion through the 1841 Census for Paisley I saw a note at the end of each E.D. That read, " At this season of the year many families Leave Paisley for the Bathing Quarters and it was ascertained by the enumerator that in this district here were absent on the night of the 6th of June ...." and then it went on to give the number. Where and what were the bathing Quarters? I've looked in Neilston, Abby, Paisley High, Middle, Low and Abbey Paisley Parishes truing to locate my ggg-grandparents Fleming with no luck. They were Married in Nielston, my gg-grandfather was christened in Nielston, and the family minus my ggg-grandfather was in Barrhead in 1851 (Mrs Fleming was listed as a widow) Its possible I might have missed them in the 1841 Nielston census I've got that reordered to take a second look. Different copy of the film this time. Mike
I too would like to thank Jim for relaying on this info. I'm so glad I took photos of the mill in 1998. I'm glad it is going to be used as it was a grand looking building. My mum and all her siblings were mill girls.. I have her embroidery pieces she must have got for her Glory Box while working there. On an earlier visit I took photos of a Mill in Green Road Paisley, it was disused almost leveled and just a few railway lines left. I sent the photo to my Dad and asked him what it used to be. I was born in Green Road so was curious. There was also a Ferguslie Mill wasn't there..?? Irene in NZ

Paula, The site is at < http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ > Maybe others will let you know of their successes or otherwise. Happy hunting - Jack, Paisley ===================== Hi! someone had told me to look at this site to look-up the surname McCorkell. However, I found no search engine to do so, just advertisements for free stuff. Has the site perchance have moved. Also, can anyone tell me what the cost is in US dollars to use the site and if anyone has had luck using it. I am searching for the McCorkells from High Church, Paisley. Thanks, Paula
Hi Josh I used the site about three weeks ago and I did have some luck. I found my gr gr grandfather's death in 1878. It cost me about $15.00 Canadian. I found some other info but couldn't view it because it wasn't on line yet. If you know the dates you are looking for you will probably have lots of luck. Could cost you a lot just to check each page. Each actual page you view will cost you 5 credits. If you want more info just e-mail me at mhagan@shaw.ca Jean ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josh Pangier" <jpangier@compuserve.com> To: <sct-renfrew-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 3:41 PM Subject: [Renfrew] Scotslandpeople.com > Hi! someone had told me to look at this site to look-up the surname > McCorkell.
