    3. I am related through my Maternal Great-Great Grandfather. He was a Lewis. My Renfro family was also neighbors to George Washington. They were taught to survey by the same person. I was not attempting to namedrop or impress. I just wanted to help the person who wrote the cranky email understand that we Scottish descendants have been very involved in the building of the United States. Our ancestors didn't have it easy here either. I'm related to Daniel Boone through the Van Bibber family. I know that he was not Scottish. I risked the assumption that the writer would know who Daniel Boone was. Wanted them to understand that our Scottish immigrants were very involved in the building of this country. They suffered many hardships. I lost many family members, Renfro and Van Bibber as they traveled with Daniel Boone on his trip west. The Renfro line is Scottish. 1. Re: [Renfrew] The Scottish in America.
    2. Samantha Parnell
    3. Scientific research into the mitochondrial DNA (passed down through the FEMALE line) of western europeans has established that of all of us are related to one of 7 women in pre-history. No other female lines survived down through the ages. There is a book published within the last year or so, the name of which I simply can't remember, tells the whole story. (Seven Daughters of Eve, I think.) The recent (within the last few weeks) "find" of a homosapien in Africa who lived at the same time as the neanderthal, suggesting that neanderthals were only a branch of the human line and not ancestors, confirm for most of the scientific community that the roots of ALL human beings begin in Africa thousands of years ago. Clearly, we are all related to one another, whether we are Scottish, English, Irish, African...whatever! The fact that we haven't been nice to one another in the past should not dictate how we treat one another now. Given that we are all related, it is time we begin to treat one another accordingly. Although I really enjoy discovering my Scottish roots, I also have Nordic, English, Cherokee, Welsh, Irish, and Italian roots. To which should I align my sympathies? Given the above facts, I have had to put aside narrow considerations of nationality and celebrate my place in the human community. Let's stop this silly bickering based on nationality and relatively recent past history (1600's is not so far back!) and help one another as human beings equally invested in the discovery of our common roots. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lana Renfro-Moye Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2003 1:44 AM To: SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Renfrew] The Scottish in America. I'm just catching up on email. My first thought was "did someone get up on the wrong side of the bed?" Or, maybe someone needed a nap. The Scottish people that came to the United States had it no easier than the Scots that went to Australia. We came here to escape the conditions in Scotland. Some of our family members came here to save their lives. Many of us had prices on our head. Many were transported here by the English as troublemakers. I come from some of the first Scottish settlers in the United States. My Scot ancestors have been in the United States since the 1600's. We explored this country and spread civilization as we went. My family explored along side Daniel Boone. One of his sons married into my family. I am a descendant of two American Presidents, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Our current Vice President is a cousin. Did you know that 75% of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence, signed in 1776, were of Scottish descent. Most of our American presidents are of Scottish descent. The Scottish blood that runs in most Americans, especially our first leaders is part of what has made this a great people. We, are as proud of our Scottish blood as you are yours. We came to this country and we continued the fight with the English here. We won our freedom from a tyrant that thought of us as savages. We celebrate our Scottish heritage with pride. The first Scots in the United States didn't have it any easier than did the first to arrive in Australia. The US like your country, was large, open, but very wild. You need to read the history of the Scots that settled in the Carolinas. This country was no more developed than Australia was. Our Native Americans weren't any happier to see foreigner there were yours. Many of our ancestors died from disease. Do you have any idea of how many men and women were shipped here as nothing more than slaves by the English. They didn't come to our "Gold" mines. We didn't discover gold in the US until well into the 1800s. The Scottish had been here for over 200 years by then. When we, Scotland, lost wars, the English would ship the prisoners of war to the American Colonies. The Scottish cut their way through the jungles of the south. They cleared the fields that made English Lords rich. The Scots as they worked off their indenture, or sentence; would move further west into the United States, taking the offer of free land. Much as they did in Australia. Very few early Scots had it easy here in the US. Remember we, like you, started under the heel of the English. Many early Americans were here because they had been burned out of their homes in Scotland. Their names had been taken away. Australia wasn't the only place the Scottish people went to start over. My Scottish ancestors fought as hard as yours did, to survive. Our pride in our Scottish heritage made us name many places in our country after places in Scotland. The same is true of Canada. Please study more about the people of Scotland and what they have done around the world. Very proud to descend from Robert the Bruce. 3. The Battle of Bothwell Bridge; The Shipwreck of the Crown of London Interesting site for those trying to find family members from Scotland to the Colonies, and West Indies. http://www.stardate.bc.ca/ivan/sub_pages/bob_miller.htm Covenanter prisoners from the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, which was fought on June 22nd, 1679, were banished to the plantations as slaves. This was a rebellion between the Scottish Presbyterians and King Charles II's Church of England/Episcopalians and it occurred 8 miles southeast of Glasgow. 1184 prisoners were captured after the battle, some were tortured and executed (".to be hanged on a gibbet till they be dead, and their bodies be hung up on chains in the said place till they rot."), but most were discharged on August 14th with the Act of Indemnity proclamation. However, an earlier order had been made on July 4th by the Privy Council for all "Ministers, Heritors, and Ringleaders" who were to be prosecuted and banished to the plantations as white slaves. William Paterson was the merchant in Edinburgh that contracted with Provost Milns, Laird of Barnton [7], for the job of transportation [2]. The prisoners were held in the Greyfriar's Churchyard, Cannongate and Edinburgh Tollbooths (prisons) and Heriot's Hospital. On November 15th the 30 prisoners held at Edinburgh Tollbooth were moved to Leith by Captain John Ballfour [3] to board the Crown of London [4] which was commanded by Captain Thomas Teddico [4] (described by the Reverend Blackadder as a ".profane, cruel wretch, and used them barbarously.") and sailed for either Barbados [6] or Virginia [8] on November 27th with 257 prisoners. Ylana Stoneyfields Ranch Remember what your elders used to say, "Birds of a feather flock together." If you're an eagle, don't hang around chickens: Chickens Can't Fly! You can't soar with the Eagles if you hoot with the hoot owls.

    1. [Renfrew] Coustonholm, Pollokshaws, in 1851 census
    2. David Hawgood
    3. I enquired recently about "Custon Home" and Jack Mills suggested it is "Coustonholm". Coustonholm Road is now just by East Pollokshaws Station. On an Ordnance Survey map from OldMaps site, this location is shown as "Coustonholm", just North of the White Cart Water. First, can someone tell me whether this was in Eastwood Parish? Or was the White Cart Water the county boundary to Lanarkshire and Govan parish at this point. An 1868 gazetteer says the White Cart River goes through the parish of Eastwood, but there seems to be a boundary on the old OS map. Second, can someone tell me the reference for the 1851 census enumeration book for this area? Or even better, also tell me whether William CAMPBELL and wife Mirren (or Marion) were living at Coustonholm. It is described by the descendants in New Zealand as being a farm with an apple orchard, which looks possible from the old OS map. regards, David Hawgood London, England.

    3. 3. The Renfrew M.I.s were published some years ago. I have seen Volume 1 only as a loose-leaf typewritten booklet - Volume 2 as a soft-cover printed book. Both have been filmed by the LDS and could be ordered as films for viewing through your Family History Centre. Maybe chech whatever library you can access for the printed versions. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rose" <Rosemari@bigpond.com.au> To: <SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 13, 2003 7:31 PM Subject: Re: [Renfrew] Greenock Cemetery,Scotland > Hi, > Does any one know where I can buy these M I for Greenock > Rose > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Bill Brown" <bbrown@ozemail.com.au> > To: <SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, June 09, 2003 9:27 PM > Subject: Re: [Renfrew] Greenock Cemetery,Scotland > > > > Sharon > > The Monumental Inscriptions for Greenock Cemetery & West Greenock Cemetery > > have been transcribed for the period up to 1855, which does not help with > > your first query. > > There is no record of a Molloy in the pre- 1855 transcripts. > > Bill Brown > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Sharon Stamis" <queenbee_44@hotmail.com> > > To: <SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com> > > Sent: Monday, June 09, 2003 7:41 PM > > Subject: [Renfrew] Greenock Cemetery,Scotland > > > > > > > Thank you Maggie for your reply. 3. Rose, I got mine from the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society, http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/ , scroll down to Recourses on the left and then click on publications. You have to go down the page a ways for the MI's. The books are paperback. They do not take credit card payments. The Scotland Genealogy Society also has the MI's. Advantage here is that you can order online and pay by credit card. http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/ To add to Bill Brown's comment on the time period covered by the MI's, they recorded any gravestone that had a date of pre-1855, so there are some entries with later dates. Also, if there was no gravestone, then they were not recorded. That is the case with my family. It was thanks to the Greenock Burials Registers microfilmed by the LDS that I was able to find some of my family. Good Luck, Julie Dufault
