    3. Hi again Jane, I have found probable parents on the IGI for my Matthew Paul. They are John PAUL and Margaret WHYTE, married 30 November 1782 in Inchinnan. There is also a christening for Matthew in 1783, along with several siblings. Their names were Agnes, Janet, Margaret, Elizabeth, John, William, Andrew, James & Margret. Can you or anyone else connect to any of them please? Every Blessing, Christine

    3. Hello Catherine, Glad to hear from you. Actually, my Isabella Paul was the daughter of Matthew Paul and Isabel/la Robertson. I found a marriage for them on the IGI in Inchinnan, 6 January 1805. Inchinnan is less than 4 miles from Paisley. Matthew was christened there is 1783 and Isabella in 1788. Like yourself I had thought her parents were James Paul and Mary Allen, but her death certificate proved me wrong. Paul is not a common name in the Renfrew area so probably we will connect somewhere. 3. Hello Kerri, A relative of mine left a will in 1875, in it she left £20 to the Mission Coast home, Saltcoats. This is not your seaside home but it suggests to me that there may have been a variety of coast homes or seaside homes funded by charities such as the church for holidays for deserving cases. Any one know more (or better!) Moira ----- Original Message ----- > > in the 1881 census, i have a John JAAP >>

    1. [Renfrew] RE: Pottery info
    2. maryegger
    3. Thank you, Elizabeth, for the info on the Hillcoats. Now to try to make some connection with my lot. I have the booklet on the Caledonian Potteries which my Glasgow girlfriend mailed me one time. My sister )now deceased) has one of the ginger-coloured saut buckets. There is a matching one in the People's Palace (the one that is illustrated in the booklet), and I believe another was auctioned and someone in England has it. GRRRR! When I remarked to the curator in People's Palace that I thought the saut bucket was sort of ugly, she remarked that for that period, and for that particular type of pottery, it was a very well done piece. So much for my artistic eye. I have two ironstone (I think) plates and a toby jug made by Alexander Spence (either Sandy or Alec). The plates have a transfer pattern, not a hand-painted design, though Jane (Jean) Hillcoat, wife of Spence, classified herself as an artist on one of the censuses, I believe. The toby jug is "white" and quite crackled now...with a few chips collected over the years. I have never seen a toby jug mono-coloured before, so this could be a collector's item, just on this basis alone. I want my children to send it to the People's Palace to be added to their collection by Alexander Spence when I depart this earthly vale...maybe I should send it NOW, as a few of the grandchildren have their eyes on it! This is about as much as I know, except that at one point the Spences moved to Rutherglen. The Caledonian/Townhead )Garngad) potteries were in and out of ownership over the years, and when Sandy Spence moved to Rutherglen, I'm not sure if it was with the Caledonian Pottery. I'll need to refer to the booklet again for this information. How I wish I had asked questions when I was growing up. Same old complaint, eh! Again, thank you for your kindness in digging out this information for me. I know it must have taken you a little while. Maisie -----Original Message-----

    2. Moira Ledger
    3. Hi Mike, You appear to be doing extremely good work on your look ups. Would you be kind enough to have a look for one of mine for me? There is no hurry. Robert Paton was born 1851 in Nitshill so may not be born by census day, his parents were Robert birth estimate 1820 and Margaret either 1819 or 1820, and if robert junior IS there then his mother may be dead as she probably died in childbirth. There is at least one sister (Margaret) born 1847 and she survived to adulthood so she should be somewhere. There may be other siblings or not. The Paton is Patton in one or two places. If you are really kind then the next generation up is John Paton and wife Marion who married 1814 but I do not know dates or birth or death, if they are there then a reasonable guess would be both born around 1793. Again Nitshill is the likely area in which they may be found. I dont know how much work I am asking you to do, if it is too much then please pass. Mine ties in with Alison Cline's, in a way. I am looking for a family of ARBUCKLEs who lived in Greenock (West) in the 1850s. Mostly, I'm looking for a female, born circa 1840s, who may have given birth to an "illegitimate" son, Malcolm Arbuckle, on Feb. 14, 1859. This baby seems to have been taken away & raised by M(a)cKellar relatives up in Argyllshire. Looking for some kind of connection for the 2 families. Perhaps some McKellars lived near some Arbuckles on the census of 1851 in Greenock? > > Alison, do you know of any Arbuckle or even Argyllshire connections to your folks?
