    2. Stephen Aiton
    3. I am researching my gg father John Aiton who was born in Houston (near Paisley, Sct) on 10 July 1860, parents Andrew Aiton & Catherine McNair. He emigrated to Australia via the USA in the 1890s. There does not seem to be any record of his birth between 1855 - 1865. Any info on Aiton or McNair appreciated. __________________________________________________________________ McAfee VirusScan Online from the Netscape Network. For any researcher just starting out with Scottish genealogy & unfamiliar with their naming system, it must be quite a minefield, at first. I was just thinking of a family I know, in Argyllshire; cousins of my Dad & how only one of the eight actually went by their proper given name - Teena (Christina), Cathie/Kay (Catherine), Isa (Isabella), Neilly (Neil), Hughie (Ewan), Mamie (Mary), Nancy (Ann) & Iain! > > Then there's the other type of nickname. For instance, the McGregors of Balquhidder, Perth; Rob Roy's kin - practically every one was Peter, John, Hugh or a few other given names, all living there at the same time. So how did they sort them out? Big John, Red John, Dark John (in Gaelic, of course), but unfortunately these names rarely survived & all we are left with are the given names on the census - names they may never have been known by during their lifetime. > > My Dad knew a man, in Scotland, called Johnny Nan. His name was actually John MacDonald, but due to the overabundance of similarly named fellows in the area, he was John - Ann's (Nan) son - MacDonald, or just Johnny Nan. Now try & look him up on a census 100 years from now! > > My grandfather was Malcolm MacKellar, but went by Caldy for his first name. 1. [Renfrew] re Jock
    2. Janet Stevenson
    3. As a child I lived in a small country town in NSW Australia and one of my father's friends was known as Jock Laird. He was not the only person in the town with a Scottish accent. My own grandfather also was Scottish. When grandpa had two new grandsons he decided they should be known as Pat and Mick. This was despite the fact that the babies had already been named by their parents and registered as such. They are still known as Pat and Mick some 80 years later. Mick is properly known as Kenneth Leslie, but time has blurred the correct name for Pat. Cheers, Janet from Sydney

    3. I know it was a while since you sent me the message below - thanks for this. I have just remembered that Christian Clark (Wilson) said she had a brother John - quote `said to be weak in the mind`. He was living in 1853 but I have no idea if he was married or not. So that would be John Wilson - presumably also elderly. Likely born Greenock. I presume there would be too many Wilson too spot the individual . Can you look also for Isabella Clark or Spence born circa 1821 Helensburgh - part of the same family. Was in Glasgow in later life but may be in Greenock in the 1850`s. And Mary Clark born Helensburgh - same age group Anne > > Hi > There is a Christian Clark at Greenock as follows > Name, Age, Parish, District, Book, Page, Line > Christian, 85, Greenock, 440, 82, 10, 13 > I can't find anyone on the same page. > > Mike > >
