    3. Hi Michelle I quote from the directions given to enumerators for the 1841 census Time may be saved by writing the following words, shortly thus, "M".for Manufacturer, "m" for Maker, as "Shoe m" for Shoemaker, "CL" for Clerk, "Ag lab" for Agricultural labourer, which may include all farming servants and labourers in husbandry. Use no other marks or abbreviations but those herein allowed. 1. Re: [Renfrew] Greenock Cemetery Burials
    2. There are 10 stones with the surname Lang on them. There are 9 stones with Spier(s) on them. The Renfrewshire MIs books have indexes which only have surnames in them ..no dates, no first names. Apart from the fact that, much as I would like to be helpful, I really do not have time to do lookups,- as I have reiterated on other lists, if one person supplies the information from an MI book where is the incentive for family history societies to continue to publish other MI books. Believe me, trekking round a graveyard peering at worn inscriptions is not a barrel of laughs ..especially if it is raining and the midges are out. Book sales are the only way the volunteers will be convinced that their efforts are worthwhile. Recently the Dumfries and Galloway Society was given permission to start publishing the Dumfries MIs collected in the 1960s by Messrs Gilchrist and Shannon. There are about 40 graveyards. The first one, Annan, is in print; the others hopefully will follow........... but only with the proviso that the first ones sell. No sales - no more publications! Irene

    1. Greenock Cemetery Burials
    2. Athalie Taylor
    3. If someone has access to the Greenock MI's would they please do a look-up for me. My gg-grandfather was John Shier and he died sometime between 1839-1851. His wife Susannah's first husband was Stewart/Stuart Morrison and he passed away between the birth of his last child in 1830 and Susannah's marriage to John Shier in October 1835. The 1841 Census has Susannah aged 35 years living at Arthur Street, Greenock East, with five of her children - two of them from her first marriage. A Robert Shier aged 55 years was living there as well. I am not sure if this is her husband John (possible mistake made with his name)or maybe her father-in-law. All other records have Susannah's husband recorded as John. Three of her children with Stewart Morrison were born at Greenock/East Greenock and two of John and Susannah Shier's children were also born there. I hope someone can help me with burial dates for these two men. Thank you, Athalie Taylor Launceston Tasmania
