Hello William, I don't know if these are yours or not but the familysearch.org site has a Lachlan McLean born 1840 in Glasgow and a Margaret MacLean born 1856 in Milton Glasgow and a Hugh born 1849 in Port Glasgow Renfrew. I just realized Hugh was mentioned in a previous post by another lister. All show parents of John McLean and Margaret Henderson. Hope this helps a bit. Hi Nivard In response to The problem with the search you did is that as far as I know the other surname field is only for use in the case of a married woman? the one you found actually died in 1897. I checked my files & my 3rd great grandmothers death appears in both her married & maiden name along with her mothers MS, eg. Davidina Campbell mothers ms MacDonald (a MacDonald married a MacDonald) & also Davidina MacDonald mothers ms MacDonald. Regards Lorraine

Its worth mentioning though that you can search for just about anything using the 1881 CDs from the LDS, however there are some oddities. With one of the Scots CD in and open (of which there are two, Highland & Lowland) if you search the Highlands CD on British Guiana or West Indies as a birth Country you will get no hits, but if you leave the birth Country on "all" and enter Berbice you will get 7 hits, you will notice that there are birth countries shown that do not appear in the index of birth Countries i.e. Guya for Guyana Cari for Caribean If you then click on the "Guya" (for example) you now get a list of 29 persons born in Guyana (British Guiana) This list is of course just the persons on the Highland CD and you would need to repeat the search on all CDs The 1881 on familysearch unfortunatley only covers England and Wales but you can at least search there with just forname and birth country Sorry its a long mail but may help someone Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Admin for OVINGTON - HAYLOCK - SEYMOUR Lists >> As I said Mary ANDERSON born 1827 in South America (from 1851 census) >> actually Demerara, British Guiana (from her fathers will) >> >> Now she appears in the 1851 but not in any census thereafter with the >> family, all of which I can trace except one, Ernest ANDERSON born 1840 in >> Hastings Sussex, a half brother to Mary (he goes to South America in 1861 >> and is not seen again) >>

Hi Lorraine Thanks for your time I had tried to weedle the information out of Scots Peops but have some problems to overcome As I said Mary ANDERSON born 1827 in South America (from 1851 census) actually Demerara, British Guiana (from her fathers will) Now she appears in the 1851 but not in any census thereafter with the family, all of which I can trace except one, Ernest ANDERSON born 1840 in Hastings Sussex, a half brother to Mary (he goes to South America in 1861 and is not seen again) So she either died before 1861? or I feel more likely married but to who? she could of course have returned to Demerara? or gone to England (although I have scoured Englands census and BMD to no avail) The problem with the search you did is that as far as I know the other surname field is only for use in the case of a married woman? the one you found actually died in 1897. So unless there is a census available that enables searches by birth place I am stuck. If there are any other ideas I would love to hear them (please! <g>) Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Admin for OVINGTON - HAYLOCK - SEYMOUR Lists > Hi Nivard, > > I did a free search of deaths on Scotland's People. > > I put in Anderson, Mary, in other surnames, Fraser, birth 1827 +/- 3 > years, > 1855-1900, Lanark. Hi Nivard, I did a free search of deaths on Scotland's People. I put in Anderson, Mary, in other surnames, Fraser, birth 1827 +/- 3 years, 1855-1900, Lanark. There is one match. Hi all I have a problem in that I have a young lady who is in Aikenhead on the border of Renfrew and Lanarkshire in 1851 and I would very much like to know where she went to after that She was born in Demerara British Guiana in approx 1827 the daughter of George ANDERSON and Sarah FRASER , Sarah sadly died and George later remarried to Mary HAYLOCK, it is from this later union I descend. The way Scotlands people is set you cannot search for a birth place and as Mary ANDERSON is as common as muck, I am finding it very difficult to know how to proceed? I have tried all variations on the LDS 1881 cds and as many as I can think of on Scots Peops, nothing obvious on the IGI. Are there any census that can be searched by place of birth? The connected family (mostly SMITHs) are at Crofthead House Cathcart by 1861 where they live for many years but no sign of Mary after 1851. Anyone any bright ideas as to how I might trace Mary? All help and advice very much appreciated Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Admin for OVINGTON - HAYLOCK - SEYMOUR Lists PS as its so close to the border I shall also post this to Lanark apologies for duplicates.
