    1. [SCT-RENFREW] Clarifying place names in Inverkip
    2. Judith Harper
    3. I'm trying to clarify a place name in Inverkip, Renfrewshire. Can anyone on the list please help? The place as we read it (documents from 1880s) is Ormrod Mill. But I cannot find any other reference to Ormrod Mill anywhere. But I do see note of a Dunrod Mill in Inverkip. Are we misreading or can anyone confirm an 'Ormrod Mill, Inverkip' at that time. Any help greatly appreciated Judith Harper NZ >

    3. Hi Claire Thank you very much for the information on the Cavan's. I believe these are the right people in the 1861 census. It also lets me know that they did move and to where. This will be a good help in the future. I think I will get my nerve up and try Scotland's People. Thanks for the trouble it took I really appreciate it. My Christmas will be happier now. Best wishes Isabel

    2. Katie de Haan
    3. Isabel and others, My experience of the 1851 & 1861 census is that you can use all of Ancestry if you sign up for a free fourteen-day trial period. We tried that out on someone else's computer and, as Bonnie said, that turns up a list. When you click onto one of the names for the information, you are asked to sign in and make a new free account. Not everyone will be inclined to do so, but it might be worth your while if you have a number of searches ready to do and know roughly what you're looking for. Using our subscription, we checked out Daniel CAVAN and family although it was not clear to me when Agnes CAVAN would have been about ten: 41, 51 or 61. This entry below can be found in the 61 census. Could it be your family? Both parents were born in Ireland and William might have cast out on his own by then. Margt and Mary are sometimes mixed up and a move from Renfrewshire to Glasgow is quite possible. The occupations given for the girls are cotton framers and cotton throsters. I'm afraid I don't have time to report the exact information for all the members as you have to click on them one by one. I hope soon they'll have the originals on Ancestry, but for now, the transcribed info is all we have unless you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Daniel CAVAN 58 M b abt 1803 Head born Ireland spouse Mary Reg dist Milton, Civil Parish Glasgow Maryhill, Lanarkshire Address 15 Oakbank Street, occupation coal miner People at that address: Agnes CAVAN 18 b Linwood Daniel CAVAN 58 coal miner b Ireland Elizabeth CAVAN 16 b Linwood John CAVAN 13 iron moulder b Johnstone Renfrewshire Mary CAVAN 57 b Ireland Mary CAVAN 21 b Paisley Elizabeth CROOKIE 17 boarder b LKS Elonear O'NEAL 20 ditto The only obvious Daniel and William CAVAN in Kilbarchan are small sons of one Hugh aged 30 & Marjory CAVAN, iron miner, but they might well be related. 3. Hi All, I'm trying to trace my ancestors in Renfrew. Andrew Cassidy owned a business as a cartwright and joiner at 27 Fulbar Street until his death in 1928. He married Margaret McGUNNIGAL in 1898 at St Peter`s RC Church, Partick. They had 4-children Margaret (Meg) Cassidy, Winifred Cassidy, Michael Cassidy m Christina COPELAND, and Andrew Cassidy married Annie FINNEGAN. After Margaret McGUNNIGAL died Andrew married Mary SHEPHERD in 1912 at St James' RC Church, Renfrew. They had 3-children: James cassidy, Joseph Cassidy and Annie Cassidy who married John WAUCHOP. If any of these names mean anything to anyone I would be delighted to hear from you. Many thanks, Frank Cassidy --------------------------------- The all-new Yahoo! 3. Claire, this happens sometimes with ancestry: some people get longer than others. I got six days free over the American thanksgiving weekend when it should have been free for three, and that wasn't the first time. But like Bonnie I can't get any details from the Scottish censuses now. 3. Claire: Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I put the same in the right place and then get at least one page ALL with the same name and to look at each one I have to click on a link (I forget what they're called) and when I do that, I get a page saying that I should buy a larger subscription, but I'm not allowed to see them. Maybe it's because I have a small subscription for Canada only, but I thought this was available to everyone. Thanks for anything. - Karen

    1. Re: [SCT-RENFREW] 1851 & 1861 Scottish Census online @ ancestry

    3. Hello: Regarding the Scottish Census at Ancestry. On their list they show that it is Free for a short time, NOT TRUE. You can only get a list of the names but you cannot search it. Disappointing. 1. [SCT-RENFREW] MAGUIRE in Australia
    2. Dear List, Some kind soul sent me off list an attachment of the death certificate of John Edward MAGUIRE some time back. John was born in Glasgow but died in Australia after having been there for about 20 years. I have lost the email but not the attachment. I finally had time to review it closely and there is definitely a family connection. Could this person email me at this address: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) John Edward MAGUIRE, born Renfrewshire around 1880, son of Edward MAGUIRE, born Fermanagh about 1856, and MaryAnn DEVLIN, born Fermanagh about 1853, married 1877 in Glasgow. Parents of Edward were: Terence MAGUIRE, born Fermanagh and Margaret LEONARD Parents of MaryAnn are: John Devlin and Ann McArdle Devlin I believe that my GGGrandmother Bessie MAGUIRE MCDONNELL was a sister to Terence and that John's younger brother Hugh wound up back in Fermanagh in 1901 census with my GGGrandfather Hugh MCDONNELL and then stayed there. 1. [SCT-RENFREW] Erskine and my SPEED roots
    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hi folks, I just joined this list, in the hope that someone might be able to help me with my research problem! My gt.grandfather was James SPEED, b. abt 1834/5. He worked all his life in glassmaking, ending up a glassworks manager in Birmingham, England, by 1901. I am writing a book about him because in 1879 to abt 1884 he was in Japan, responsible for helping the Meiji government set up western- style glass manufacturing. But when I look back to his early life, I cannot find him or most of his family in 1851. In 1841 he and his family are living in Barony, Glasgow. By 1859 we know he is living in Edinburgh because he marries there at age 24, and in 1861 he is living in Edinburgh, and in 1871 in Bathgate. But 1851 is a problem. The places given for his birth in the censuses are: 1841, same county, ie Lanark 1851.... not located at all. Only 2 of his sisters have been found on the census. 1861, "Dumbartonshire, Erskineburgh" 1871, "Renfrewshire, Erskine" 1881 (abroad) 1891 (not present) 1901, "Scotland, Dumbarton" or "Dunbarton" (this is when he is living in England) (His father was David Speed, b. 1804 in Glasgow, and his mother was Margaret Riddell, b. 1804 Carmunnock.) We do not have a birth certificate for him and do not know why he always gave some birth link to Dumbartonshire or Erskine. None of his 4 sisters gave any birth location that was outside central Glasgow, although I have yet to find and check their census entries in later years. By 1859 he has already served his apprenticeship as a glassmaker. I wonder if he was an apprentice in Erskine? I have done a brief search into glassmaking in that area around 1850 and only found the glassmaking in Dunbarton but that seems to have closed before he would have been ready for an apprenticeship. His mother worked in service and it is possible this is the explanation - that she gave birth while away from home working in Erskine. An aunt who has since died told me that there's a strong story in the family about illegitimacy to a titled line, possibly Buccleuch, but I know no more. Were there any Buccleuch households in the area? Can anyone explain why he would say (in the census of 1861) that he was born in "Dumbartonshire, Erskineburgh"? Was Erskine ever included in that county? His mother was born in Carmunnock in 1804, and her parents married in Abbey, Paisley in 1795. Maybe she had some roots in Erskine or Dunbarton. We do not know. His father was born in Glasgow of parents who married in Angus. I would much appreciate any help or thoughts on this! Many thanks Sally
