    1. [SCT-RENFREW] WEBB in Greenock 1840s
    2. Carolyn Webb
    3. Hello, My ancestor, John Webb, is listed in the 1841 Census as a general dealer living in Shaw St, Greenock. His wife, Susan, and three children James, Elizabeth and Catherine, aren't listed because that year they sailed (without him) for Port Phillip (now Melbourne) Australia on the ship Ariadne. John Webb isn't listed in the 1851 Census at Greenock. I wonder if he died. I think he was Catholic. Does anyone have access to death or burial records for the 1840s and 1850s for Greenock and could they do a look-up for me? John Webb is often listed as a poulterer. The 1841 Census said he was born in Ireland. Thanks. Carolyn Webb Melbourne, Australia. The information contained in this e-mail message and any accompanying files is or may be confidential. 3. Thankyou for looking all that up. YEs these are my ancestors. I have long wondered about Thomas' birth date - there is only one that is near it in Yorkshire and that is in Selby in 1786. He died at the age of 59 in 1845 which would place him in that year.... do you think that would be more accurate than the 1841 census which rounded up its dates? Kind regards, Katherine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Muirhead" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2006 5:14 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-RENFREW] "Ravenshall" > Katherine, > > Ravenshall is a frequently used place name, I've run across it several > times on > both John Ainslie's and John Thomson's pre 1898 Ordnance maps in many > parishes. > Not as common as Crosshill, Crosshall or Crosshouse, but still common > enough. > > A quick peek at the 1841 census shows the family living at 90 West Street > in > Gorbals. > > Piece: SCT1841/644 Place: Gorbals -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 99 > Civil Parish: Gorbals Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Gorbals > Folio: 98 Page: 1 > Address: 90 West Street > > Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks > NEWTON Thos M 52 Iron Moulder England > NEWTON Helen F 42 Lanarkshire > NEWTON Mary F 18 Lanarkshire > NEWTON Ann F 16 Lanarkshire Page: 98/2 > NEWTON Sarah F 14 Outside Census County (1841) > NEWTON Thos M 12 Outside Census County (1841) > NEWTON Helen F 8 Lanarkshire > NEWTON Hanah F 5 Lanarkshire > NEWTON John M 3 Lanarkshire > BROWN Elizabeth F 18 Female Servant Outside Census County (1841) > > There also happens to be a Thomas Newton who married Helen McLoun > 01-JUL-1822 > in Glasgow. The Newtons lived in and around the Gorbals in the mid to late 1800's. Thomas Newton had been an Ironfounder/moulder and John Hall Newton became a soap manufacturer both in Glasgow and in Scotland. 3. Katherine, Ravenshall is a frequently used place name, I've run across it several times on both John Ainslie's and John Thomson's pre 1898 Ordnance maps in many parishes. Not as common as Crosshill, Crosshall or Crosshouse, but still common enough. A quick peek at the 1841 census shows the family living at 90 West Street in Gorbals. Piece: SCT1841/644 Place: Gorbals -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 99 Civil Parish: Gorbals Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Gorbals Folio: 98 Page: 1 Address: 90 West Street Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks NEWTON Thos M 52 Iron Moulder England NEWTON Helen F 42 Lanarkshire NEWTON Mary F 18 Lanarkshire NEWTON Ann F 16 Lanarkshire Page: 98/2 NEWTON Sarah F 14 Outside Census County (1841) NEWTON Thos M 12 Outside Census County (1841) NEWTON Helen F 8 Lanarkshire NEWTON Hanah F 5 Lanarkshire NEWTON John M 3 Lanarkshire BROWN Elizabeth F 18 Female Servant Outside Census County (1841) There also happens to be a Thomas Newton who married Helen McLoun 01-JUL-1822 in Glasgow. The only Thomas Newton and a "Helen" tying the knot so to speak, within the time span of Mary's birth. Scot's People should be able to verify and clear this up. You might also wish to check the 1851 and 1861 census as well. The IGI also shows a couple of Thomas Newton's being born in Yorkshire, one in 1791 the other 1785. If the enumerator of the 1841 census got it right then the 1791 would make sense providing of course all the births of a Thomas Newton in Yorkshire during this period were captured and transcribed. 3. Hi ! WELL, my LINDSAY ancestors lived and owned "Ravenshall" for at least three generations of Lindsays. My Grandmother was married there and her Father was the owner. In those times, I believe it was an INN I have a book called Exploring Scotland;s heritage, in which it states that it was thought to originally be the gatekeepers house for the KIRKDALE HOUSE. In modern times I think it was turned into a bed and breakfast. It should be easy to find in any touristy brochure, It is south of Glasgow. I believe it was approximately 1 mile north up the coast from Gatehouse of Fleet,KKD, and believed to be where the smugglers caves were. I have a bit of literature on it, but I have a vision problem, I can see ,but it is difficult to type long passages. Ask at Dumfries and Galloway Genealogy Society, I am sure they know all about it. Feel free to write again. Barbara (Harper) Logan. 1. [SCT-RENFREW] 1881 Census for Bell family in Lanark.
    2. Hi Bonnie, Apologies for the slow response. The Scottish 1881 census is available on C D Rom discs, and can be purchased as part of the English 1881 Census or is available in FH libraries. I found your Bell family there as follows. 1881 census: New Monkland, Lanark 6 Hallcraig St. GRO Ref 651-1 E.D. 18 Pg 4 Ann BELL Head Housekeeper Widow 45 Ireland John do Son Butcher Un. 25 Airdrie Annie do Dau. Nil 15 do William do Son Scholar 11 do Andrew do Son do 8 do Note Ann Bell is recorded as a Widow, and you have children born since 1861. To find the christening or birth of children go to www.familysearch.org I found two children there: Ann Bell, bn 1860 & Fanny in 1856 Both give the mother's maiden name. These were extracted from the parish records by volunteers. I'll leave the fun of checking them out to you. Hit the Batch number and put in your family name and, you will see there are quite a number of "Bells" in that area. New Momkland is close to Airdrie, if I remember right. Note with Fanny's information there is information submitted buy someone, possibly a descendant, giving more details about Fanny in the Pedigree Resource file. The mother's name is spelled differently. I'd go with the familysearch spelling as they were taken from the parish record. (which admittedly could have been given phonetically and been misspelled) Anyway, I hope this is helpful, Don. Wilson A.G. P.S. If I can help anyone else with look-ups on the Scottish 1881 Census, send me your info, but be prepared to be patient. :-)

    3. Hi Bonnie Sorry to take so long, other things to do :-( > So you're saying that there is NO Census images for Scotland? There are images on Scotlands People but the Scots GRO have it so as you cannot get access without either using their site or visiting Scotland. So Ancestry have the next best thing in the transcription. With the ability to try all sorts of combinations it allows much more to be tried that would simply cost to much on Scotlands People as they have their search engine dummed down to get more income. > I was looking for John Bell (born Ireland) c.1832 living in Stevenston, > Ayrshire in 1861 OR still in Airdrie, Lanarkshire with wife Ann. See below > I have the Ancestry subscription for Canada, to include Britain, it works > out to about $400. Ridiculous price per person. Its 69gbp for the UK Ancestry, how much is Canada ? Here looks like your man although the birth year is way off, does it look like yours? the age could be mistranscribed, only way to check is get the image. There is a Fanny BELL registered 1857 and an Ann registered 1860 Airdrie on Scotlands People that would tell you a lot more, its also worth checking the 1861 enumerators page as it may give you more, sometimes a birth place in Ireland? 3. Hello Nivard: So you're saying that there is NO Census images for Scotland? When I went into that section, I had clicked on Scotland, so I assumed there was something there. It said Free and I thought it was Free. Not so I guess, but I don't know why they would say that. I was looking for John Bell (born Ireland) c.1832 living in Stevenston, Ayrshire in 1861 OR still in Airdrie, Lanarkshire with wife Ann. I have the Ancestry subscription for Canada, to include Britain, it works out to about $400. Ridiculous price per person. Thanks if you can find him for me. 1. [SCT-RENFREW] Duncan CLARK b abt 1818 to 1823 in Greenock
    2. Darlene Carlisle
    3. Hi all Just a short note to relist my interests in Greenock. I am looking for any details on Duncan Clark born in Greenock Scotland. I have narrowed his parents down to 3 sets (from IGI & Scots People) but I really don't think any of them are the ones. I have his death certificate that states parents unknown, hence how I got his approx birthdate. I also searched for all Duncan CLARK's born about 20 years before his marriage date in 1841. Also because he was here getting married in July 1841, he would not be listed in the 1841 Scottish census This is the shortlist I have come up with - 31/12/1818 CLARK DUNCAN JOHN CLARK GRACE MCNAB FR727 M GREENOCK MIDDLE 564/01 0003 31/12/1820 CLARK DUNCAN JOHN CLARK MARY PAUL FR1295 M GREENOCK OLD OR WEST 564/03 005* 11/02/1821 CLARK DUNCAN JOHN CLARK AGNES MCKAY FR1296 M GREENOCK OLD OR WEST 564/03 005* He come to Australia abt 1839 or 1840 and I haven't been able to find a shipping record for him either - then he married in 1841 and had 10 children here in Victoria, Australia If anyone has a link to this man, I thought that by process of others eliminations, that I would be able to nail him down for certain, so if you are related to any of the above please let me know.
