What a lovely Christmas present to receive your emails concerning graves in Renfrew. I've been blocked trying to get further back than mid-1770s in the Lochwinnoch area and your info re contacts for the cemeteries (I didn't even know how many there were) will be most helpful. Being an Aussie in Queensland means all research is via internet or correspondence - but who to write to etc? Do you have any contacts for researchers who are reliable and reasonably priced (the conversion rate is a killer for us O/S) who might like to follow a path or two? My GrGrGrandfather, John Clark had a Bakery in Paisley which might have been at 31 or 33 Gauze St (1861/81 census) when he died in 1901 he was at 3 Maxwell St. Perhaps there's some building still standing which reflects this? I have the book "Let Paisley Flourish" which is filled with historical streetscapes (and relevant to me) but I haven't been able to locate a Bakery. Thanks to Gail, Sandy and Moira for asking the right questions. May all listers have a Happy Christmas and a great New Year with successful researching. Hello Gail this may also help you. This is an old email I saved with info. Do you know how to read the Archives of this list. There are lots of emails with info that could help you. ? Having just visited this Paisley Central reference library, I'm reeling from all the information I collected, re quantity, quality and the helpfullness of staff. Hi Gail, ...........from Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society.... . Publications Secretary, Unit 13, 32 Mansfield St., Glasgow G11 5QP Two volumes of the Renfrewshire Monumental Inscriptions...both Pre 1855 can be bought. If you log on to _www.gwsfhs.org.uk_ (http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk) you will find an extensive publications list....therein you will find the specific volume which publishes the Monumental Burial grounds and Inscriptions you need in order to uncover information on your ancestors' headstones ( pre 1855 ) In some burial grounds ( the intro says ) " we recorded all inscriptions irrespective of date and we indicate this in the introduction to the burial ground concerned " . Was surprised to note , for example...there were 6 cemetries in Greenock...and 12 in Paisley........little wonder I am having having difficulty finding my ancestors...Pre 1855 Wishing you all have a Happy Festive Season. Have the same trouble with rellies, Irene so I contacted Pasley Family History Centre asking for details of my great-uncle, Andrew Cassidy of Fulbar Street. I received copies of his listings in the 1926/7/9 &1931Trade Directories plus several pictures of the Street and area at that time - copies of which I forwarded to his grand-daughter in Melbourne. True I'm about 12,000 miles closer than you but I'm still 300-miles from Paisley. The cost was £1 and a chat with a nice lady over the telephone - (the £1 was obligitory for the Council and didn't even cover the cost of postage). I've found that a letter to the local history centre in specific areas can help.. The Adress for Paisley's is: The Family History Centre, Paisley Central Library, High Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, PA1 2BB. You never know, a letter may get you some voluntary help from a willing local genealogist Frank Irene Polkinghorne <[email protected]> wrote: Hi Sandy, Glad you can get help, I have the same problem with my rellies right on the doorstep.
