    1. [Peebles] 1841 Scotland Free Census Project
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Census Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZeC.2ACE/286 Message Board Post: I am excited to announce the launch of the Scotland Free Census project. This is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th century census returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database. We have a project covering the 1841 returns for Ayrshire and would like to recruit organizers to cover the rest of the 1841 Scottish returns. Organizers recruit and supervise a team of volunteers to transcribe a county or part of a county. The area you cover is up to you. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. This is a global on-line project for ordinary family historians who are interested in contributing to their hobby. If, like us, you believe that this information should be freely available and available for free, just drop me a line at jgribble@speakeasy.org More information on the project can be found at: http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble Scotland Recruiter & Ayrshire Coordinator UK FreeCEN Project http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html

    1. [Peebles] STODART (STODHART) and associated names
    2. I have been working on the STODART (STODHART, STODDART) surname in the area between Edinburgh and Peebleshire. The following are some that I am researching. I am hoping that someone doing the female lines may be able to add something, or at least verify that I have the right combinations. These are mainly from the IGI OPR christening and banns records, by the way. I have been trying to verify them by looking at the actual tapes, but the handwriting is stumping me. 1. [Peebles] DAVIE Surname - Especially Silversmiths!!
    2. Janelle
    3. Hi List Does anybody out there have the name DAVIE in their research? I still have a huge brickwall with my GGGrandfather, James DAVIE who married Elizabeth HALLIDAY in Greenock, Renfrewshire in1816. She was born in 1783 so I assume he was born pre-1783. He is not listed on the 1841 Greenock Census and in 1851 she is listed as a widow. I had somebody search for his death, no records. He is not mentioned in any Monumental Inscriptions and is not buried with Elizabeth. He could have been born/died/buried anywhere in Scotland. He is mentioned in the Pigot's Directory for Greenock in the 1830's as a "working Silversmith/Goldsmith" in Greenock. There is a Thomas DAVIE, Silversmith listed in Greenock in the 1830's too, perhaps they were father/brother, but no birth/death/burial records for him either - anywhere - so I am stuck! I found a listing for a William DAVIE, Silversmith from Edinburgh and some of his (and Thomas Davie's) silverware is mentioned on Antique Silver sites. Both had "Hallmarks" although my James Davie didn't, it seems. I had been waiting for the Wills site to arrive online - but no sign of a Will for James, Thomas (or William) DAVIE. Even the Sasines of Renfrewshire didn't turn up anything for James or Thomas DAVIE. Help!!!!
