I will, in turn, do any research in the Wigtownshire area where I live. My ancestors James and Mary Lewis (m.s. Forrest) lived, I think, in West Linton at that time. I would like to find a census entry for the family to see how many children there were. Names I have at the moment are David, Sophia, Isabella, John and George although I am unsure if they all survived and I believe there may be more children born to them.

Hi there, One of the families I am researching are the BROWN family from STOBO, in Peeblesshire. I have WILLIAM BROWN who was a Grainmiller at Stobo in the middle to late 1700s. His son WILLIAM BROWN, born 1782 at Stobo was married to JANE BRYDON of Traquair, on 14 April 1817. Their son, another WILLIAM BROWN, born 1818 at Stobo, was married to ISABELLA THOMSON of Innerleithen, on 13 May 1842. Their son ALEXANDER BROWN, born 1855 at Stobo, was married to HELEN GRAHAM of Libberton, on 7 January 1876. ALEXANDER BROWN and HELEN GRAHAM lived at Slate Quarries, Stobo. Their son, yet another WILLIAM BROWN was born at Yarrow 1875, (he was born before his parents were married) and was married to MARY AGNES ANDERSON from Stobo, on 17 March 1906. WILLIAM lived at Slate Quarries, Stobo. And their son, WILLIAM BROWN born 1911 was my father. I would just love to hear from someone out there who is researching my BROWN family from STOBO. Dear listers I have subscribed just to make this announcement and will be unsubscribing immediately as I have no known Scottish connections in my own research. I have just uploaded my Scotland IGI Middle Name index at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis. This adds Scotland to the English counties for which I have created such an index. I believe that middle names are an invaluable resource for finding clues to family relationships. Strangely I have seen very little written about their use as research pointers in any of the literature, nor have I seen this issue discussed much on the mailing lists. I have not seen any middle name indexes or search tools available anywhere either. BUT - often a person's middle name is the same as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother or reflects some other familial connection (maybe the name of a patron or benefactor). It may also be the father's surname for births occurring out of wedlock. It seems obvious to me, therefore, that they have significant value in genealogical and family history research. I have found nearly 39,000 different middle names (some of which are obvious transcription errors for each other) appearing in over 780,000 of the christening/birth/adult baptism and marriage records on the IGI for this region. This is out of a total of over 6 million christening/birth/adult baptism and nearly 4 million marriage records (representing half that number of marriages, of course, since there are two records in the IGI for each marriage) for these churches/chapels. This is all of the entries in the IGI for Scotland that have been extracted as part of the controlled extraction program. I have not yet checked the parents' names on the baptism records for additional middle names - that is a much longer task which I may or may not be able to do. As always a warning about using the IGI is necessary. It is ONLY an index and is full of transcription errors. However it has been a mammoth undertaking on the part of the LDS and is an invaluable aid to research. Nevertheless, it bears repeating that there is no substitute for viewing the original records (or at least fiche or film of them). The IGI does assist you in locating those records and so narrowing down your area of search. Hi fellow listers, I would like to thank all those in the past 2 years who have answered my numerous queries regarding my PATERSON family. Through all your help I have finally broken through. I had a JOHN PATERSON b 18 May 1797 in Carmichael Mill, Provost of Peebles and Ironmonger/merchant. Parents: JAMES PATERSON AND MARY WATSON. (This information from Obituary and Death Cert.) No sign of birth of John but a James Paterson lived at Carmichael Mill. but not married to Mary Watson. (No children of John were named Mary nor did any of his children name a daughter Mary. Plenty of Marions though. My elderly cousin researched for 16 years and could find nothing and after many frustrating months I have made the break through. Thanks to the computer and all the wonderful listers out there someone gave me the Monumental Inscriptions for Biggar. (John's daughter Jane Paterson b 1823 in Peebles married a Grocer called William OVENS. and lived in Biggar ) On the same stone as Jane and family was the inscription: JOHN Paterson, died 15th May 1837, spouse Marion Watson and 2 children. Could this be Jane's Grandparents? Then some kind gentleman posted the Scottish Document website. and lo and behold there was a Will for both John Paterson of Peebles and for James Paterson of Biggar. I have just received this Will......JAMES Paterson, Portioner of Biggar died 15 may 1837 and names eldest son James of Carmichael Mill. Second son John (ironmonger of Peebles) and two daughters...Marion who married a Thomas Ovens and Agnes. I am ecstatic!!!!!! Thanks a million Ave Ferguson nee Paterson Napier, New Zealand.
