    1. [Peebles] History of 1800 Scotland
    2. Colin
    3. G'day to all my Scot's mates on this list!! I have a question for you. What was happening over there in the early to middle 1800's? My research so far revolves around a family of Paterson's from around Biggar and later Peebles the two eldest brothers migrated from there to Paradise (Australia). During my research it continually crops up about the numbers of Scot's who left home for Canada, USA, Australia, NZ and other far flung places. Depending on who is telling the story, apparently some were forced to leave, for what reason? Were convicts sent to Canada and the US and NZ? were there exceptional numbers of Scottish Crims? I can understand Pom's and I know about the potato famine in Ireland which helps explain their migration. Verrry interesting. Banj, banjo1@bigpond.net.au

    3. Hi Colin, In the 1840's and 1850's there were two principal reasons for mass emmigration. One was a change in farming practices leading to the keeping of far more sheep. In that connection it is interesting to compare the occupations given in the 1841 and 1851 census. You'll find very large numbers of agricultural labourers in the 1841 Census however when you look at the 1851 Census you'll find a much lower proportion of these and a substantial number of 'sheepherds', an occupation which is quite unusual in 1841. The other reason was that this was a period of great agricultural depression, the combined effects of the two meaning farm work was increasingly hard to come by and some 24% of males under 25years left Scotland over this period. 3. If you get a chance, I would love any information about any Peebles that might be in the cemetary. Peebles is my maiden name and my father always said that is where his relatives came from. I was in Peebles a number of years ago and there are no longer any Peebles in Peebles. Didn't get to the cemetary as it poured rain the 2 days we were there! Good luck - it's beautiful in the Tweed Valley - enjoy! Carolyn sarah_richardson@memorial.org wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
