Hello Jennifer, Take the A72 westerly out of Peebles, then turn north on B7059. The old Newlands Parish Churchyard is on the east side of the road about where the B7059 crosses the Lyne Water. (Take your boots as you need to cross a bit of pasture to get to the Churchyard.) There is a photo of the ruins of the old Newlands Parish Church at: http://www.murrayofstanhope.com/james_murray,_flemington_mill.htm Jack Murray ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.Familton" <j.familton@xtra.co.nz> To: <SCT-PEEBLES-SHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 13, 2003 12:50 AM Subject: [Peebles] Newlands parish > I have found this parish and village on an 1801 map but no mention of the > village of Newlands in modern maps. > There is an unnamed cluster of buildings in what I think must be the place > with an indication of a church still just east of Mountain Cross. > The Rev William FAMILTON was minister at Newlands Relief Church for 6 years > from 1796. Hello- I have just recently traced my GG Grandfather William DONALDSON's birth to Peebles. In 1851 he was living in 8 Northumberland Street Marylebone London, was a tailor, employing 1 man. He married Mary LIPTROTT, sometime in the early 1830's, she was from Wigan Lancashire. I believe he died in 1859 (the 1861 census has Mary as a widow) The 1851 London census has him aged 45, born Peebles. This gives me a rough birthdate of 1806. The IGI has one entry for a birth - William DONALDSON, born 16 July 1807, ch 13 Dec 1807, parents George DONALDSON and Helen MACARTER. I have also found the entry on Scotland's People and have sent for a copy of the actual entry, in case there may be any more detail. In the meantime- I looked for a marriage for George DONALDSON to Helen MACARTER/MACARTHUR (I know how spellings are- and also the name Arthur has popped up in a grandson and great grandson of William so I am not ruling out the possibility her surname could have been MACARTHUR) however I have not been successful in finding a marriage in the IGI for them. I have found a couple of Births for a George DONALDSON in Peebles but without fathers names I can't be certain on anything I find. Helen proves more difficult- can't find a birth for her in Peebles. Neither of them may have come from Peebles...what I really need is to ascertain a marriage for them if possible. William DONALDSON and Mary LIPTROTT had 4 known children: (all born Marylebone London) William born 14 Jun 1834 John born 9 Jul 1836, died 23 Dec 1840 Henry Randolph born 17 Oct 1841, died 1891 (my G Grandfather) Thomas born 31 Mar 1850 Hoping someone with access to Peebles records might be able to look up William's parents for a marriage. I don't seem to be able to find any other children for them either- unless Peebles was a stop over of some sort. Usually the eldest child's birth will help estimate a marriage year. Of course the other small speculation on my plate is how did a man born in Peebles marry a woman from Wigan and land in London...all this may be never known.
