    1. [Peebles] William Davidson 1857
    2. legarthm
    3. Looking for William DAVIDSON born 1857 Woodhall, Pencaitland, illegitimate son of Janet DAVIDSON, Ag. Lab., father not noted. By 1861 Janet had married Thomas LIVINGSTON, & the 1861 Pencaitland census shows William age 3 years, as " wifes son ". Unmarried Janet had already had 2 children with Peter MONTGOMERY, it is possible the William was a third, however, until I find at least his marriage or death Regd., I will never know. The Kirk Session records show a Janet Davidson admonished by the session she had a child with Robert McINTOSH, a Miner of Cowdenfoot, Dalkeith. Was he the father ? Janet died 1865, & I can find no sign of William in 1871, or since. Possibly he had taken his fathers name, but I am only guessing. William does not show as living with his Maternal Grandmother 1871, along with 2 other Grandchildren. She was Marion maiden name KING, & by then married to William SIMPSON. Looking for any indication of William DAVIDSON, anywhere, any time. Mary legarthm@levin.pl.net New Zealand.

    3. Hello Pam, I have Helen LOCKIE who married David DOD(D)S Traquair, Peebleshire, 1824. On I think, the same page was Thomas LOCKIE who marr. Mary McFEY. I did wonder if he was a brother of Helen. I did not find Thomas & any family in 1851 when I searched the census, however, as with Helen he may have moved, or I could have missed him. When Helen died age 73 yrs in 1873, her parents were Thomas LOCKIE a" Teacher of School." Should you find any contact, or these names in your research I would love to know. ( I will be away from my e mails, from tomorrow morning our time, until Sunday.) 3. G'day Evelyn, I asked a similar question some time ago and the wonderful people on this list told me that the Lowland clearances were pretty much the same as the Highland clearances, all for the same reasons. The Industrial Revolution also had a lot to do with them as well. I reckon that was the reason for my lot to leave Peebles for Australia and NZ Hope you have been keeping well, it's good to hear from you again. 3. Hi Banj We have corresponded before on another list. For some reason, despite having lived in Peeblesshire for the last 15/16 years and discovering recently that I have followed my ancestors to the area, I have just subscribed to this list. I was interested in what Roy had to say about the population leaving in their droves for the "New World". I know that in the highland areas many landowners cleared their land of "uncommercial" tenants in favour of sheep and deer, but didn't know about the lowlands. I hope Roy might even reply and tell me more. Did these people leave of their own free will, or were they evicted from their homes in the same way as they were in the highlands? Many were forced into sailing overseas to new lives, while others chose to go as there was no living for them any more. Was it the same in the lowlands? Perhaps the larger population in the south of Scotland disguised land clearance, whereas in the Highlands there were more areas of low poulation so that clearances were more notable? Looking forward to hearing some information on the lowland situation. Evelyn

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Foss, Ellis, Hill, Miles, Genier Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZeC.2ACE/316 Message Board Post: Looking for information on "Father" Foss -I have been told that he was a ships captain - his name may have been John. The reason I ask is that my great grandmother (Mary Foss) had a brother named John. We are not sure where these kids (Mary (1865), John, and the others) were born, as their mother (we do not as yet have her name) came to Canada with her husband (his name may be John as his only sons name is John) who was a ships captain. He left to return on a voyage to England and never returned to his wife and six children, it is believed that he was killed in a shipping accident. Mary's mother married the man (Mr. Hill)that she was working for, a widower, and they moved at some point to Titusville, PA., USA., where Mary Foss grew up, married William D. Ellis, and had a family of her own that included my grandmother, Nannie Ellis. Thank you. Barbara Miles (outlookm@aol.com)

    2. J.Familton
    3. I have found this parish and village on an 1801 map but no mention of the village of Newlands in modern maps. There is an unnamed cluster of buildings in what I think must be the place with an indication of a church still just east of Mountain Cross. The Rev William FAMILTON was minister at Newlands Relief Church for 6 years from 1796. I want to make a nostalgic visit but can someone help me find where it is/or would have been? My thanks Jennifer Familton
