Its likely to be somewhere in Peeblesshire /Lothians area. Has any one come across it and can let me know its whereabouts? Also interested in the origins of Notman Law just above the Megget reservoir and near to dollar and black Law. Got as close as the road allowed and maybe have a photo of it but that's it. Needless to say if there are any Notmans out there I'd be happy to hear from you. Thanks. Colin Notman Southampton Colinnotman@aol.com

To show when my Grandfather John Harper was the factor. Seeing as he was there in 1881, when your Grandfather was also there in that same period, they may have known each other! Is Traquair a village besides being just the Traquair House lands? I know my Grandfather John Harper was also a gardener, and led hunting parties of guests of their animal preserves. How interesting! Looking for MORRISONS who lived on High street in Peebles. Agnes MORRISON ,b.1825 to James MORRISON and Joan Russell. Would also like to find Joan RUSSELL family. Karol
Veitch is still a big name in Peebles. Try contacting Robert Veitch, via Veitch's Corner House, High Street, Peebles. Can't give you any guarantees, but worth a try. Dawyck is an estate near Drumelzier (we don't pronounce that Z!) A big house still exists and the grounds are now under the auspices of the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. They are a very popular visitor attraction in the Peebles area. Hope this helps. Evelyn
Looking for parents of Alexander Veitch (c.1693-1780), mason and burgess of Peebles. Nine children from two wives, Elizabeth Stevenson (1696-1737) and Janet Mathieson (unknown - undetermined as yet - she is most definitely his second wife). Alexander had brother William (c.?-died sometime after 1771) three children, wife unknown. Naming convention indicates Alexander and William's father may be Gavin and their mother Margaret. Alexander was correspondent with Alexander Veitch Merchant of Glasgow. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of ntrueman@island.net Sent: Sunday, September 21, 2003 5:15 PM To: SCT-PEEBLES-SHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Peebles] veitch family circa 1500-1600 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have just joined the list in the hope that someone can help or benefit from my Traquair ancestry. My Maternal Grandparents John Renwick and Jane Walker were married at Orchard Mains Traquair Feb 22nd 1884. This information came from a Knowsley Lancashire newspaper cutting dated 1934 which was all I knew about them. A few years ago on a visit to Traquair House I mentioned this to a Guide who pointed out that Orchard Mains was a Farm in Traquair. Thus began a most interesting story which I now have on record at http://renwick.mysite.freeserve.com The connection is due to one word "CECIL". In 1870 Lord DERBY of Knowsley Lancashire married Mary CECIL the dowager Marchioness of Salisbury who had four teenage children. One of those children was Lord Arthur CECIL. 11 years later in1881 the census shows him living at Orchard Mains House Traquair and farming 5,000 acres (400 arable) with his Brother Lionel. My Great Grandfather William Walker is shown as their Land Steward living nearby in Orchard Mains Farmhouse with Wife Margaret and 8 children. Also living in Traquair on the Glen Estate in 1881 was my RENWICK Great Grandparents William (Ploughman) and Agnes with their 6 children. I would like to contact anyone with Traquair Renwick or Walker connections from this period. Also anyone with Traquair village history involving people working for Lord Arthur Cecil and the building of Orchardmains House. In 1889 he put all his possesions, livestock, and servants on a train and went back to England (Kent) where he built another house called Orchard Mains. Kenneth Vearncombe Aughton Lancashire.

Just a short note to let you know there is a problem with the submission form (again). I'm working on it and hope to have it back up and running in the next day or so. Cheers Sue
Thankyou Sally, for your response, & time. I thought that I had searched all possibilities, in the 1881 census, must have been one of those times at the end of a long day ! That William looks promising I will follow him up, & look for a marriage. The problem is, I dont know where William went to, whether or not, he emmigrated. I assumed that as he was described as " wifes son ", in 1861, that he was not the son of Thomas Livingston. Janet had an interesting lifestyle, she had 4 known illegitimate children, I imagine that she finally married, because the Free Church may have decided that all this sort of thing had to come to an end. I am hoping that someone out there may recognise the names, & link their family to this William.
