    1. [Peebles] Trip to Scotland
    2. Marlene Jackson
    3. Hi all, I am planning to visit Scotland in May and as I have never ben there before would like to pick the listers' brains for some advice. I will be landing in Glasgow, but want first to go to Edinburgh for research befor coming to Peebles. What would be the best way to get there? Does anyone know where I can look for B&B's in Edinburgh? What is the address to go for genealogy research in Ediburgh? Will probably have a lot more questions later. I want to visit the towns of my ancestors: Innerleithen, Maxton, Langholm, Selkirk. TIA Marlene Jackson Ontario, Canada

    1. [Peebles] SHANNONS
    2. Andrew Murray SHANNON
    3. I am trying to find information on John SHANNON and his wife Martha McLURE. John is my g.g.g.grandfather. My g.g.grandfather Hugh SHANNON married Margaret HAMILTON in Glasgow 12 October 1838, both born around 1822, Hugh in Derry, Margaret in Antrim. Hugh and Margaret settled in Hawick, Roxburghshire. It is possible that John and Martha migrated from Derry, may have been in Glasgow when Hugh was married, then settled in the Borders, definitely not Roxburghshire. It is unlikely that families in the early 1800s were three in size. It is known that SHANNONS did settle in the Borders and I am hopeful that someone can assist me in supplying vital information to help in my research. Andrew

I downloaded a free trial spam blocking programme from the internet but it was too time consuming to set it all up so I decided to delete it completely from my computer. I have just checked again this morning and it is not listed in my programmes so as far as I am concerned it is no longer there. Why all these messages have been sent out to everyone in my address book - I just do not know as I have not activated anything and the programme does not exist on my computer, well, not that I can see. Hopefully, it will not happen again - or perhaps someone very knowledgeable about computers may be able to tell me where this "deleted" programme may perhaps be lurking on my machine. > > I am sorry that some folk seem to have been upset by this but I did smile as one of the messages to someone in my address book was responded to by a programme which does exactly the same thing! > > Hopefully, the show is now over, > > Thanks, > > Eileen in Hampshire. > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > FIGHT BACK AGAINST SPAM! > Download Spam Inspector, the Award Winning Anti-Spam Filter > http://mail.giantcompany.com > > > > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. 1. [Peebles] JOHNSTONs in Tweedsmuir and Drumelzier
    2. Jean & John Johnston
    3. Greetings to Peebles Listers, My JOHNSTON ancestors were smiths in Tweedsmuir and Drumelzier, Peeblesshire. I note on an old map, a Smithy Burn near Tweedsmuir. No apparent sign of a smithy there but someone may know the whereabouts. However, I did find a smithy marked on the Drummelzier map, close to the graveyard where my ancestors are buried. Any ideas? Best Wishes, John Johnston

    1. [Peebles] McKERRELLs of ISLAY
    2. Clan McKerrell
    3. Apologies to those who receive this on more than one list. I'm looking for everyone who can claim a family connection to McKERRELLs on the Isle of Islay, Argyllshire, Scotland. They are widely scattered and are known to have settled at least in Canada, South Africa, East Africa, USA and Australia. The reason for the search is to invite them to the very first family reunion called "The McKerrells Return to Islay" http://clanmckerrell.50free.net/return.htm, to be held on Islay from 11 to 13 June 2004. The event is designed to be high on fun and low on formality, a chance to meet new relatives and old friends, and to find their place in the family tree. The Chieftain of the McKerrells, Charles McKerrell of Hillhouse, has expressed an interest in attending. The date was chosen to complement "Tilleadh Chlann Ile" (http://www.islayreturn.com) a family history event for subscribers to the SCT-ISLAY list that is being held on Islay from 6 to 10 June 2004. I know there are lots of Islay McKerrell descendants out there, whatever their present surname and however it is spelled. If you know of any, I'd be grateful if you can pass on to them the text of this message, or simply let me have their e-mail address.. I can be contacted at clanmckerrell@hotmail.com, or via the Islay McKerrells website at http://clanmckerrell.50free.net/return.htm. My grateful thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. 3. I was in Peebles, Scotland in April 2003. My cousin and I stayed at a B&B at the Lyne Farm, which is just outside Peebles. I think the house had been built in the early or mid 1800's The Waddells run the working farm & B&B. Their e-mail address is: awaddell@farming.co.uk and their website is www.lynefarm.co.uk. You may want to contact them for info. We stayed two nights and they were very helpful to us. My Forrester ancestors are from Peebles. Did you know there is a Peebles township in South Island? It's west of Timaru - I'm writing this from memory as I don't have my NZ map handy. I came up the coast from Dunedin and turned west before reaching Timaru, heading for Mount Cook - eventually. As to your ancestors I'm afraid I can't tell you anything except that Kingside and Easter Leadburn are about 10 miles north of the town of Peebles , but still in the county/shire of Peebles, and Newlands is a Parish about 10 miles west of the town of Peebles. (Strictly speaking Peebles is a royal burgh, which means it is a town/burgh, pronounced burra, that got a charter from the king a few centuries ago that allowed it to hold markets/fairs every so often.) Glenholm is a farm up in the hills in the area of Broughton, about 15 miles south west of Peebles. Hope this helps. Evelyn
