The symbols on the headstone are a set of mortality symbols. Such symbols are common on early Scottish headstones and appear in Ulster during the early 18th century probably a result of the Scotch planters. Some examples are here: http://historyfromheadstones.com/index.php?id=551 An audi link on the subject appears on this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/fermanagh/ardess_graves2.shtml -- Cheers, Colin Ferguson
During my recent trip through Scotland and Ireland I visited several old cemeteries and couldn't help noticing a number of headstones which bore the name (s) of the occupier(s) but on the reverse and sometimes on the front of the stone was a Skull and Crossbones a la Pirate flag. Can anyone tell me the significance of this? I am talking of graves dated earlier than 1800. I don't recall seeing any after that date. I have a photo if anyone wants a copy. Often the internees occupation was given under his name eg. Merchant, Shoemaker whatever, so does the deaths head and bones have any connection with this? Regards Col Paterson
I have twice tried to e-mail you off list both bounced back so I'll try the list I'm paying an other visit to Peebles Cemetery in July to finish off going over the headstones looking for my family, bear in mind Peebles is a large Cemetery if I find those you mention (Stevenson for NZ & Cleghorn for Ca) I'll take a photo of the headstone & e-mail it over Bob in North East of England

G'day listers, I would like to let you all know that my wife and I are now safely back in Australia following our recent dream trip to Scotland. Briefly we landed in Edinburgh and collected a rental car and set off visiting Peebles, Biggar, Douglas, Perth, Dunkeld, Inverness, Fort William, Helensburgh, Glasgow where we gave 'em back their car and flew to Dublin. We met the following great people who are now good friends Isobel Cummings in Peebles, Billy Bravaal in Douglas and Pat McIntosh Spinnler in Helensburgh. We spent many happy hours with each of them. I was able to visit my 3x grandfathers gravesite in Peebles, and my 2x Grandmothers birthplace Dunkeld. I visited the site of the Battle of Culloden. There is just too much history in the country one would need a lot longer than the 10 days I was able to have. I would like to generally thank the people of Scotland for their patience and assistance and guidance for this pair of roaming often lost Aussies. If at any time in the future I win sufficient funds I will return to that lovely country. The water was indeed good to drink bat as someone who replied to my initial question we didn't drink much of it mostly it had some barley stuff in it the whisky is wonderful. Col Paterson

Hello again all I think I may have contact the list about 5 years back but am again going to try and find if I can locate a LAWSON descendant of Sir Richard LAWSON of Heirigs, Cairnmuir, Bogall and Cambo in Scotland. I have found out a few bits of information here in Scotland on the gentleman. "Heirigs" the family mansion was located behind Edinburgh Castle, Scotland. In Australia here I have been researching for approximately 6 years for the Lawson family but as yet have not come across a living male descendant which seems very strange but many seemed to die at a young age. Sir Richard married Janet Elpinstone I do have a "Arms of Authority" chart but as yet have not been able to find out much on the family lines. Other family surnames are: VEITCH of DARWICK CLERK of PENICUIK STUART of TRAQUAIR LIDDELL of LOCHTULLOCK SCOTT of MOUNTBENGER As I am only just really getting into tracing these family connections I am not aware of where some of the areas are in Scotland so would appreciate any help I can receive. If you feel you may have a connection to Sir Richard LAWSON I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank You Hazel Magann maganns@bigpond.com -- No virus found in this outgoing message. My wife and I are researching a Boswell family, and have information about a Dr. Philip Rutherfor Boswell MC who lived in Peebles during the 1960s. At one stage his address was Tantah House, and then later Kingsmuir Hall. We are wondering what those two properties were. Are they the type of property a couple could own and live in in the 1960s, or were they rest homes? or private hotels? Dr. Boswell would have been in his 70s by then so was probably retired from practising medicine. Any information or advice much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I am researching the Glendonwyn/Glendinning families in Scotland and have located IGI christenings/baptisms recorded in Tweedsmuir Parish for individuals of this surname. A David Glendunning is recorded as having married an Isabel French, 09 Mar 1671. A series of christenings/baptisms are recorded at the same parish listing a father as Robert Glendinning; the earliest ones do not include a mother's name: 28 May 1723 Isobel Glendining 24 Dec 1724 Jeane Glendinin 20 Nov 1729 Besi Glendining 25 Feb 1732 Alexander Glendining 19 Apr 1735 Janet Glendinning (this one lists a mother's name - Janet Tweedie) If you have information on these individuals will you please contact me? Thank you in advance. Sharon Bryant Clendenin/Glendinning Project Administrator
