My Grandfather JOHN HARPER and his wife JANET LINDSAY lived in Traquair mains for over ten years, I found your story extremely interesting as my Grandfather must have been the Factor, just after the time you are speaking about. ! I don't have my papers at hand right now, but he lived there approx 1890's to about 1915, I think. They also moved to a dwelling at Kailzie after that. He speaks of having a "gypsy" cousin, that wintered near Peebles, and ,I may be wrong, but I thought I saw the name Renwick as a gypsy name. Correct me if I am wrong. All in All , very interesting. I have been in touch with Mrs Fox, and owners of Traquair, a few years back, Mrs Fox is the archivist of Traquair and sent me some letters from my Grandfather to the then owner Herbert Constable Maxwell Stuart. My Father's name was Herbert Stuart Harper and was born at Traquair. Would be interesting to trade memories. Barbara (Harper) Logan on the coast of BC, Canada blogan@shaw.ca

    1. 1871 census Moorfoot parish of Temple.
    2. kenneth vearncombe
    3. The Birth certificate for my Grandfather John Renwick born 1866 shows him as being born at Moorfoot, Parish of Temple. This is actually in Midlothian just over the border from Peebleshire. On a recent visit to Temple and surrounding areas I found Moorfoot Farm with several cottages nearby close to the Gladhouse Reservoir. There appears to no Hamlet called Moorfoot but the Moorfoot Hills are close by. Does anyone have access to the Census for 1871 showing the whereabouts in Moorfoot of the Renwick Family. His parents are William and Agnes Renwick both ages 35 in 1871.There should be 5 children James aged 10, Janet aged 9, William aged 7, John aged 5, and Andrew aged 3. His Father was a Farm Steward at John's birth in 1866. Was the family still living in Moorfoot in 1871. In 1881 the Family had moved to Traquair in Peebleshire. 1. Nasmyth interest
    2. John Ashley
    3. I would like to talk to anyone with an interest in Nasmyths, especially the mining families around Aberdour, Edinburgh, and Lanarkshire. There are many variations in the spelling of Nasmyth, including Naesmyth (the original spelling), Naysmith, Nasmith, and Nesmith (the North American derivation). My line is descended from Michael Nasmyth (1719 - 1803). He was the father of the landscape artist Alexander and grandfather of the artist Patrick and the engineer James Hall Nasmyth. I'll be glad to share information with anyone with a Nasmyth or allied interest. John Ashley

    3. Some years ago, ( about 9 yrs ) a descendant of Thomas LOCKIE & Mary McWHEY, from the USA wrote to me. I replied that I did not think that there was a connection, however, I have reread her letter, & replied again by snail mail, to say that with lots more research done now, I do think that there is probably a connection. If anyone out there, is researching the Lockie families from that , or the Stow area, i would welcome contact. Mary New Zealand.

    3. Hello List! I am trying to find out some information on my ancestors, John Whitson (born August 10, 1792 in Scotland, doesn't specify the city, and died February 27, 1875 in Delaware NY) and Janet Scott (born 1789 in Scotland, doesn't specify the city, and died September 20, 1865 in NY) They had a few children, one of which was my Grandmothers' Grandmother, Mary Whitson, who was born 11/27/1825 in Manor, Peebles, Scotland. I do know that much, anyway, and that's why I have subscribed to the Peebles list. I live in the United States, and know nothing about Peebles, and was wondering if there was a website someplace that might give me some insight into the city, just for my own information, to acquaint me more with the city. My cousin says that our ancestors tended sheep over there in Peebles, don't know that to be true, or just folklore. Besides that, I am interested in finding out more about John and Janet, as well as their ancestors, and wonder how it is that I would go about finding that sort of information out. Is there a listing someplace that I could consult, or something of that nature? Thank you so much for your time! Any help that anyone could give to me would be greatly appreciated. And, in the meantime, I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year. Beth (Beers) Rupert
