    3. I am searching for details of the family of a Sir Charles Murray who was a whisky distiller at Peebles and lived in a house called Ardenlea, probably in the time 1740 onwards to the early 1800's He was also supposed to have been a local magistrate. He may have had a son or grandson named Honorable John Murray. He may also have been connected with the Earls of Dunmore. His early descendants n Victoria Australia spoke of him in their oral family history when they arrived circa 1850. I would be grateful if anyone may have leads on Sir Charles or any help as to how I may best go about locating him in Peebles history. thanking you LIz Gibbs _________________________________________________________________ Advertisement: 50% off on Xbox 360, PS and Nintendo Wii titles! http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-4lab-71-bn-49-en-84-k-40-extended.html

    3. ** Julia - your marriage did not occur in two places: the BANNS were called in two parish churches, because the couple were resident in different parishes, and so recorded in two registers. You need to refer to the original OPR to possibly discover in which parish the marriage was actually performed. Julia said: > We are desperately wanting help.In April we are coming to Scotland and would like to track our family down. Our ggggrandfather John Stevenson married Janet Walker in both Peebles, Peebles and Eddlestone, Peebles in 1821. Janet's father's name was James Walker and he was a ploughman from Eshiels. 2 children are mentioned on the IGI Robert christened 25 Aug 1822 and James 22 February 1824. Our gggrandfather listed his birth as Howford , Peebles in 1825 on his enlistment papers. > On the earliest births they mention John Stevenson as a ploughman of Shiplow, Eddlestone. On a later he is listed as a farm grieve. You should look for the family in the 1851 census - the first census to give full information. 1841 does not give relationships or exact ages or the parish of birth. > Does anyone have access to the monumental inscriptions for this area? Are there any matches? ** Please note that many families have no monument and so no inscription.** > We have spent a fortune on Scotland's People for little result. We would appreciate any help. Better to ask for guidance BEFORE spending a fortune! It can save a lot of time and effort. Gordon Johnson

    2. I have an Isobel TAIT who married Hugh STODART (STODDART) at Traquair, Peebles. The date (at least of the posting of banns) was Nov. 19, 1757. (I believe they announced it twice in the parrish of the bride and of the groom.) According to the OPR, they had children: Helen, Janet, Thomas, Hugh, Robert, John and Elizabeth Stodert/Stoddart/Stodart. Hugh must have died prematurely leaving Isobel with 5 or 6 children. She was later on the poor rolls for the church. I descend from their son, John Stodart (m. Elizabeth STEUART/STEWART/STUART Innerleithen, Peebles Sept 1791). He worked on a farm at Cardrona Mains. I am always looking for other descendants of this line. Elizabeth was buried at Innerleithen in 1861 according to her son-in-law Thomas Ireland. Their son, Robert Stodart (bap. Traquair Sept. 1802) was my 2ggrandfather. He died in a coal mine accident in Ansonville, PA, USA, Dec. 31, 1853. His sister, Isabelle Stodart JOHNSTON (bap. Traquair 1799) died in Ansonville in 1888. Diane in Sinking Spring, PA

    3. Hi Colin Welcome, and thank you for your interest in becoming a Volunteer. I am in Vic, and migrated from Scotland 35 years ago. My folks are from Eddleston, and I lived there a good part of my life too, but it is all changed! Firstly I will give you some web sites to browse through. You do not need a microfiche reader now as the information now comes in a CD, you use and split screen on your computer. http://www.freecen.org.uk/project.htm http://www.freecen.org.uk/software/incens/sstips.pdf http://freecen.rootsweb.com/censdets.htm#sscens I don't want to put you off with all the jargon. Things are done pretty much by trial and error to start, and remember there are 2 others coming behind you to check the data you had transcribed. We do not push you, it is a do when you can, (within reason) but we would like you to give us regular emails to update us as to how you are going, any help needed, however trivial you might think it is we are only an email away, although we can't promise to get back to you the same day, because of other commitments. The only cost to you is the postage of items back to me. I hope I have made this a bit more understandable to you. Contact me again please, or I will contact you, as I do not have all the information from Scotland on Peeblesshire as yet, so not quite ready to up and go, just trying to prepare. 3. Hi Nicky, I have previously transcribed, check and validated for Frecen in Glasgow, etc and would like do Tweedsmuir if that is OK. My wife's lot were from in and around Tweedsmuir - many in the Churchyard there. So I know the placenames and the common local surnames which is usually a great help trying to read the handwriting. I also have about 100 photos of the Monumental Inscriptions from Tweedsmuir as well as some photos of places in Tweedsmuir and the genealogy of many folk from there on my site at www.chouston.f2s.com if anyone is interested. Regards Charles --------
