Rather than our own group, I'm creating a sub-group to the new Scotland-Genealogy@groups.io . I just did this for the SCT-Selkirkshire list and it's working well. I think rather thank splitting into 20 tiny lists, we should unite. Groups.io makes it east to mute topics in which you are not interested and is very flexible in many other ways. I hope you'll join us. You'll be getting an invitation soon. If you are not interested, just discard. Valorie

    1. [SCT-Mid-March] Our Rootsweb lists are going away
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. I am shocked about this. We've been sharing information and helping one another on these lists for over 20 years. Thank you subscribers and contributors over the years. This email is addressed to the East Marches, Scot Middle Marches and West Marches lists, which have been sadly underused. Here is the text of the announcement to all of us listowners: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will > be discontinued. After that, mailing list archives will remain available > and searchable on RootsWeb. > As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a > great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message > boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. > Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this > community. > Sincerely, > The RootsWeb team We have no Message Boards for the Marches, but the counties can be quite useful: Selkirk, for instance is quite a tiny county: https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.britisles.scotland.sel/mb.ashx with over 1000 messages. I urge you to use it, and all the boards, especially because you can upload photos and other images to the boards, which are not available here on the list. Usually posting to the Locality board is most useful, by the way. We do have the option to create a list elsewhere, and I'm willing to do that, if you want that. What do you think of the idea of a Scottish Borders and Marches list? I've created one new group on Groups.io and am willing to create a SCT-Borders&Marches@groups.io group if you are interested. Here is an example: https://groups.io/g/newzealand/. We can do a lot there that we can't do here, so check it out! *If you are interested, please respond* here on the list. If not, that's fine too. I'll miss you here, no matter what the future holds. Valorie

    1. [SCT-Mid-March] Rootsweb lists are alive again!
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hello everybody, After some months, RootsWeb mailing lists are up and running on updated software. A few things are changed, some for the better. One of the items currently being addressed is why messages from subscribers are not always going directly to the list. Sometimes these posts are being held for administrative action. This could be because the poster - although subscribed to the list - may not be registered with RootsWeb. So my advice is to register with RootsWeb. It takes only a few moments and might fix the posting issues. Instructions: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail If you had an account set up before, you can use the same email and username, but you *must* choose a new password. If you are an Ancestry member, please do not use the same password as you use there. One of the great things about registering is that you will be able to control many things about your list mail from Rootsweb without contacting the listowner. All the best, Valorie list admin -- http://about.me/valoriez

    3. Hi Roy, What I'm thinking is that Dingleton patient records would give you an exact date of death (plus perhaps some clues as to the shellshock/railway stories). And the day book might have a note about the funeral arrangements - either the collection of the body or maybe a member of staff attending etc. Judy On 18 Sep 2006, at 17:56, Roy wrote: > Hi Judy, > > Sorry to be so long getting back to you but I've been on Jury Service. > Thanks for the comments which I think as you say you have given me > before. > However what I was looking for was a memorial stone. There are two > family > stories about Elliot, 'shell shock from the war' and 'dis-figurement > following a fire at Riccarton Junction about 1920' > I understand the difficuties about Dingleton but I just wanted to > find a > memorial stone if one exists. > > Regards > > Roy > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "judy olsen" <copywriter@tesco.net> > To: <SCT-MIDDLE-MARCHES-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, September 04, 2006 12:21 AM > Subject: Re: [SCT-MID-MARCHES] Fw: Elliot Stavert Hardie > > >> Roy >> >> As you have been searching for a while, I think I probably mentioned >> this. However what I was looking for was a memorial stone. There are two family stories about Elliot, 'shell shock from the war' and 'dis-figurement following a fire at Riccarton Junction about 1920' I understand the difficuties about Dingleton but I just wanted to find a memorial stone if one exists. 1. [SCT-Mid-March] [ADMIN] We're here! AOLers, Digest subscribers, please take note
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Our list has been migrated to the new software and new server. Please add the new list address to your addressbook, if you have not done so already. Leave the version with the -L there for the time being, as some people will continue to use that, and it will continue to work for awhile. **This is expecially important for AOL subscribers.** Please do it now. Also, check your spam folders. If you find list mail there then please be sure to CLICK the *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to the inbox. It is VERY important to help train the filters and let AOL know that this new server can be trusted. If you have questions about AOL and Rootsweb, and how the new list software will affect you, then you can join the AOLers-Rootsweb email list by sending a new email to AOLers-Rootsweb-request@rootsweb.com with only the single comman subscribe in the subject line and body of the message. If you get email from another provider who filters SPAM for you, please do the same thing -- mark list posts as NOT SPAM if you find them in SPAM folders. Digest subscribers, once you get a digest or two, if you do not like the new format, drop me a note at the admin address and I'll change you back to MIME. Listname-admin@rootsweb.com, no -L, no -D. All the best, Valorie

    3. Roy As you have been searching for a while, I think I probably mentioned this. When I was researching my Melrose book I got a book on Dingleton out of the library. It mentioned all the old records and how they were hoping to find somewhere to preserve them after the closure of the hospital. There is a lending copy of this book at Jedburgh library and if there is a reference copy it should be there on the shelf. The title is something like "Dingleton, the story of a community" With 1950 you may be up against the Data Protection Act but you might be able to get an extract of the record from the health board/trust for a tenner. There are references online for the act and its implications. The idea is that with recent records you might get a glimpse of details that relate to someone outwith your family if you see the original. The record staff of course see everyone's records in the process of making the copy! 1. You may notice something different here, soon
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hi, all. Rootsweb is moving to a new list system, and our list is scheduled to be moved this week. You may notice nothing, or some small differences. You probably got an email from "announce@mail.rootsweb.com" explaining what was happening, unless it landed in your SPAM folder. If you need to see the entire email, please contact me privately. However, here is a list of the changes you might notice: 1. Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. If your digests arrive in a different format than you are used to and you would like it changed, contact me privately at the list admin address, which stays the same: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. Also, if you run into any unusual or confusing occurrences with mail from this list that could possibly be related to the changeover, let me know at the admin address. 2. The "-L" is being dropped from the official list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com instead of the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. ** You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. ** If you use email headers to filter list mail to a special folder in your email program, check whether your filters will need tweaking under the new system. 3. If you previously subscribed to the list in both L and D modes using the same email address you will find that you are no longer subbed in Digest mode. The new software doesn't permit the same address to be subbed in both L and D modes. Therefore, if you wish to receive both modes, you will need to subscribe to the digests using a different email address. Write to me at valorie dot zimmerman at gmail dot com if you would like an invite to gmail, one of the free email systems available. Yahoo and Hotmail will also work well. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. Be sure to use the command in the Subject line, not just the body of the message. --- Please continue to send your queries, data, and responses to the list as usual. It is a great time to post a new query to try to break down those brick walls. I have a number of lists moving this week; sorry for the form letter! Eventually we will all be very happy that this move was made, difficult as it is for the staff and list administrators right now. It's like moving from an old house with a leaky roof and bad plumbing into a new modern place -- very cool, but the move is still difficult! All the best, Valorie PS: Exact timing of the move: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html

    3. From: "Temple" <jmtemple@telefonica.net> Subject: Death records Subject: Death records I have been trying to track down some ancestor's deaths for years now, without success. The persons concerned are :- George Temple of Camphouse, Jedburg parish and his wife Isabel(la), nee-Dagleash. I traced their marriage at St. Cuthberts church, Elsdon, Northumberland in 1801, and some subsequent children baptised locally at Birdhope Craig Presbyterian church. The family seem to have gone back to Camphouse and I note them on the Roxburgshire / Camphouse census of 1841, George Temple, labourer, age 70, b. outside. Isabella Temple , wife, age 79, born outside. My request is, should any lister come across the date of their deaths, could you inform me please ? Mike Temple, Spain. 3. Hi Jo, Could you say a bit more about the period you're interested in? One of my Border family lines goes back to about 1400, but I fear it would involve rooting around in old documents to fill any gaps at that period --- not the stuff of television! In any case, the professional genealogists have been at it for a long time. I realise that 'medieval' is a loose term and depends on which country in Europe you are studying. In Britain the dates appear to be 1100 to 1500 - am I right? I have a puzzle much later than this, perhaps 1675 or after. It relates to the story told by Walter Scott in his well-known ballad 'Young Lochinvar'. According to my records, this daring hero was my seventh great-grandfather, Captain Graham of Breconhill who kidnapped (if this tradition is true) a (willing!) lady named Anne Kirkpatrick of Closeburn on her wedding day. I haven't been able to match the epic ride described in the poem with the actual farm/toun names given in my family tree, and of course, Scott might have used poetic licence! This event, if true, happened after your 'medieval' time limits, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Sara
