I think it might be a Scottish habit to give apparent male names to females. In my family I have a girl called Clelland DUNLOP. One of my ancestors was a lady called Bruce ELLIS. As her last name was also spelt ALICE, she ended up on the IGI as Alice BRUCE and it took me years to find her. So never take anything for granted!! Jeanette (NZ) >
