There was a lot of coming and going between Ireland and Scotland amongst agricultural labourers in particular - they tended to follow the work that was available. My COLE family came from Ireland to Kircudbright in about 1830, presumably in search of work. The father, Charles COLE, was an agricultural labourer. The other possibility is that they were "planted" in Northern Ireland by the British as loyal subjects among the rebel native Irish, but 1740 is a bit late for this. Most of the "plantations" took place during the 1600s.
