I am interested in reading the emails re : clean out of the area - does anyone have information on those going to Australia. My relatives John and Isabella Rigg came to Australia in around 1840 ? I am new to this list, spending most of my time researching in Yorkshire and Cumbria. What has taken me over the waters is CUMPSTON castle which I have tracked down to the parish of Twynholm, care of the Dumfries and Galloway on line census search. It is the only place I have found so far in the UK with this name, and I am interested if anyone can tell me about its history, or if any of you have research which includes the name CUMPSTON. The name is now very rare - just 46 entries from the 1901 census for England and Wales, and most of the names can be tracked back to Brough in Westmoreland. There are however over 7000 in America and many more in Australia, all from early emigration. I would welcome any connections or leads you can offer Best wishes Glenys in Bishopdale www.bishopdale.demon.co.uk Web site for the Upper Yorkshire Dales Family History Group Seeking CUMPSTONs everywhere Member of the Guild of One Name Studies
