Hi Everyone, This is my first letter to the list as I just joined 2 minutes ago. I'm newly researching the CLAVE line in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright and also in Elrig Village, Mochrum. My BARR line I think, is from Brockloch, Kirkcudbright. I'd love to hear from anyone doing these names no matter where they are. I can then send more information if anyone is interested. Also, would anyone have access to the 1841 or 1851 census for Kirkcudbright? I'd love to find out if any BARR or CLAVE were listed. Thanks a lot, Shelley
Found this on the GIRTHON OPRs 1832: Jan 14th Samuel IRVING son of late James IRVING Esq. Surgeon. Gatehouse formerly of Jamaica 15yrs. "Poisoned"
I was wondering if anyone has access to the 1851/1861/1871 census for Dalbeattie Kirkcudbrightshire? I have Robert NEWALL son of Charles Newall and Jane Thomson who married Isabella Wilson in 1864. They have children Margaret, Janet and Jane b. in 1865, 1869 and October 1871, and then emigrate to the US. I am trying to find out more about the NEWALL family, so would appreciate it if anyone has access to the 1851/61 or 71 census to find out , in the 51 and 61 census who else was in the Newall famly, and in the 1871 census where Isabella and Robert were living. Can anyone help? Barbara

My Great Grandfather, Lewis Martin was born in Pleasants, Kirkmichael in 1810 - married in Durham - Helen Gibson Begg - born Dumfries 1813. Lewis's parents were William Martin and Mary Herneman Lewis was a blacksmith at Preston Mill. He and his family migrated to Australia in 1867, leaving behind in Kirkbean their two eldest daughters .- Mary Ann Martin who married John Briggs, son of Archibald Briggs and Elizabeth Campbell at Kirkbean. There were five children from this marriage .Elizabeth 1859 William 1860 Margaret 1863 Mary 1867. Eliza Martin married David Anderson.,son of Robert Anderson and Isabella Dobie. They had six children Lewsi 1866 Janet1868 Eliza 1870 Sarah 1871 Helen 1872 Annie 1873. I would be interested in finding out about Scottish descendants of these as I am compiling a family history. Nice theory. BUT! the IGI has thousands of illicit. births shown. The usual clue, is that MOTHER name alone is given, no father. Example in Kirkcudbright IGI: SLOAN Isabella born 1 January 1863, Father/Mother named as JANET SLOAN. Cheers......... ALISTAIR (Alec) CAMERON
Hello Having searched the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Scottish Births & Marriage records on Computer Index & IGI for my SKENE family from Kirkcudbright. I know there are gaps in the Parish records, I knew of 2 children born in the same parish around the same year, only 1 appeared in the LDS records and the same thing years later. I decided to order in the 'Old Parish Records'(OPR) on Film from my local LDS history centre. What I found were the births listed on the OPR, and not on computer Index & IGI. The conclusion I came too, after doing some extra double checking was, a Natural or illegitimate childs Birth & Baptism was registered/recorded in the Parish, but!!! not recorded by LDS. I found the 2 missing links, 1.'Natural Child of'..... 1.'illegitimate child of'....... Has any one else experienced this??? Marg Australia.
Hello Marg, I have noticed that some entries in the Parish books have been missed by the persons who did the extractions but not because they were "natural born" or "legally born" in marriage. I have done a lot of research of Scottish records as my Dempster family came to America in 1841. The Dempster's were in Kirkcudbrightshire very early and went to Straiton in Ayrshire after that and finally to Dalrymple in Ayrshire. I have Templeton's, Muir's and others. I have found records that were not in the index but were in the Parish books of both natural & legally born children. Hi, would any one know where some would be buried if they died in Creetown, Kirkmabreck. My GGG Grandfather ROBERT SPENCE died at Duke Street Creetown on the 12 February 1863. Any help gratefully received From a fairly new researcher Maggie in Australia
Does anyone have a Samuel MCGOWAN, born 1846-1847 in Kelton??? Thanks, Mamie Rudd
Looking for the birthplace and parents of Thomas PAYNE who was born July 11, 1827 in Kirkcudbrightshire. He was a printer by trade, married Sarah Ovens from the Isle of Man, worked in Liverpool, and eventually immigrated to Canada and USA in about 1858. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Ken
Hi Jim There are 2 (at least) Dalrrs, one in Ayrshire and one in Kirkudbrightshire. It is also known as St John's Town of Dalry, which explains why your search may not have found it.
