Hallo All I am a new subscriber - I live in South Africa - and have for some while been looking for the ancestors of my GGrandfather Samuel Scott. I do not know much about his life in Scotland other that the fact that he was born about 1840 and that he declared on his emigration that he was from Dumfries. He had two brothers William and Robert and a sister Mirran (or Marion). A cousin of Samuel, Isabella Scott was married to a SWAN and the only combination I could find of these names was a couple John SWAN married to Isabella Scott in Colvend. Today I found a picture sent by a cousin of Samuel of the Port 'o Warren coastal village with a note that said "this was the area where your grandfather lived as a boy". Is there anybody on the list who has an interest in either the SCOTT or the SWAN families of the Colvend/Port 'o Warren Area? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Dear Betty, For what it is worth, There are a number of Boyd and Henry Lairs/Graves shown in the Monumental Inscriptions Books for Kirkcudbrightshire in Volumes 4 and 5. The one nearest to a Samuel Henry is Lair 108 died Glenhead,Rerrick 9th Dec 1885 aged 73. however, his wife was Mary Clark 1820-1901. There was a Family of Boyd in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, my cousin's in-laws. Their daughter married William Campbell. they emigrated to Hazenmore,Saskatchewan, Canada. Mary Boyd was born in Dryfesdale Lockerbie 10/8/1879 and died Hazenmore,1963. Two possible sources of research--apart from Registrars in kirkcudbright and Dumfries is to ask The D & G FHS Research Centre at 9,Glasgow Street,Dumfries,Scotland for a volunteer to check the OPRs/census for you or you can surf New Register House Scotland. http://www.origins.net Origins cost £6 for 24 hrs and Certificates cost about £10. From your known data and certificates you should be able to compile a tree plan (Even a very small one). If you care to let me have an e#mail with your compilation of what seems your tree I will try to advise further. Hi Can anyone tell me whether the Parish of Girthon still exists, and if so, which towns it incorporates. I have on a marriage certificate, that the bride and groom in question resided in Gatehouse of Fleet but were registered in the Parish of Girthon. How are they connected? The persons in question are: Thomas JOHNSTONE - parents Janet EWINS and Gordon JOHNSTON - (with no 'e') Grace RIDDICK - parents Elizabeth Templeton and James RIDDICK. They were married in 1861 at the United Presbyterian Church. If anyone recognises any of this or knows the answer to the above, I would be very grateful for your help. Many thanks Victoria Germain
I am trying to locate my Great Great Grandmother, Henrietta Kathyrn McCandlish, who came over from Kirkcudbright Scotland somewhere between 1850-1860. I think it was closer to 1855-1858. I think her father might have been William Candlish and mother Isabella. The last name may have also been Candlish. It seems she might have added the Mc to her name when she came to USA. Her grandparents might have been John & Jane Candlish. She might have had other siblings with a sister named Catherine. Henrietta's father remarried after her mother's death and at the age of 18-21 Henrietta came to the United States. Henrietta came by ship to the New York Harbor and then lived with her aunt in Iowa. Aunts name, I think, is Eliza Candlish, who later might have returned to Scotland. Henrietta married in Brookville, Iowa in January 27, 1859, to Fredrick C. Nawgel. I have not been able to find any records in Iowa of their marriage or etc. I have not been able to find her on any immigrant list. Henrietta's birthdate is June 2 or 5, 1837 and she died in August 18, 1900. She is buried in MO. I don't know if she, Eliza, was Henrietta's father's sister or who she is. I am assuming since this William Candlish funeral card is in the family Bible, he was her father. I also, have other funeral cards that were in the family Bible. They were for: 1) Catherine Grieve - Card states: Beloved wife of Thomas Davies who departed this life May 30, 1888. Toxteth Park Cemetery. Thinking maybe she was Henrietta's sister and was adopted by the Grieves. Maybe later married a Conning. 2) James Conning-d. October 26, 1885 at 25 years of age. Toxteth Cemetery. I have no idea who these people are, but they must be some importance as their cards were in the family Bible. Maybe her father-in-law? Not sure why Henrietta added the Mc to Candlish upon coming to U.S. or if her father used the Mc at one time. Is there a site to view this cemetery records? I can't find any concrete proof. I have no other info and keep running into walls. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Please reply. Thank you, Cindy

You wont find the Toxteth cemetery records on line, but I suggest you try the Liverpool list. Someone would be able to tell you who to contact Toxteth (in case you didnt know Toxteth Park is in Liverpool) The Liverpool link is: [email protected] F. Greetings to all Listers. I am seeking information/leads to sources on my GG Grand mother, Isabella Emily (McCULLOCH) DRIVER and her family in Scotland. She was born 14 OCT 1843, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, parents William McCULLOCH and Isabella STEWART. Isabella died 28 NOV 1882 in Shillong, India. She was married to Andrew Brown DRIVER, (who was born in Beverly, MA, USA), in Cherra Punjee, India. Andrew was engaged in conducting a tea plantation, and their 5 children were all born in India. I have no information on whether Isabella had any siblings, but do have some (limited) information on her parents as follows: William was the son of John Ramsey McCULLOCH and Isabella STEWART. He served in the 13th Native Infantry in India. He was a Political Agent in Manipur, Assam. He authored a book entitled, "Account of the Valley of Manipur and the Hill Tribes" pub. in Calcutta 1859. He died in Shillong 4 April 1885. He was the oldest son of Edward McCULLOCH, laird of Auchengool, and Sarah daughter of Rev Dr James LASING of Glasserton. I have no further data on William's family. I have tried to gain more info by subscribing to the INDIA-L on Rootsweb, but have had little success. If anyone has any connections, or any leads to suggest, please do contact me. Hi everyone I am looking for info on Thomas Johnston(e) married to Grace Riddick. I believe they came from Girthon, and were married in 1861. They had a daughter named Agnes who married John Tait in 1892 in Anderston District of Glasgow. They also had a son John Tait in 1894, also in the Anderston District. Does any one recognise any of these names? Thanks in advance. Victoria Germain

Hi Group, I'm back. Did you miss me the 1 day I was gone? Just kidding. Shelley
Reposting my research interests after a three month absence: Robert CARSON (born Dumfries1841) married Mary Ellen ANDERTON (Liverpool). Robert was the son of Robert CARSON (bn around 1812 Dumfries) and Grace SHAW (bn Kirkcudbrightshire around 1812). Grace was the daughter of William SHAW and Mary COLTART (bn KKD, buried Tongland Cemetery KKD). F. Carson West Oz.
Shelley, I found a Brockcleugh farm and plantation about 1/4 mile from Brockcleugh Loch. They are about 1 1/2 miles due east of Kirkcudbright town at OS coordinates NX 707 518, 707 520, and 709 517, respectively. Would this be the farm you are seeking? If you would like a scan of the area sent to you via email attachment, please let me know.
