Hello Everyone I am looking for information about the Walker family around Newton Stewart during the 18th century. Of particular interest is William Walker, born in the latter part of this period, who married Mary McGhee. Thank You Hugh Matheson Hugh M Matheson Vancouver, BC Canada
I would love to hear from anyone who connects with these ancestors. McQUEEN James McQUEEN married Mary NAY (NAE or McNAY). The had at least 2 children; Robert McQUEEN b.1806 in Kells, Kirkcudbright James McQUEEN b. abt 1811 also in Kells James McQUEEN probably married Mary SHAW (I have no children) I am a direct descendant of Robert McQUEEN who married abt 1830 Mary ROBISON b.1806, Rerrick (or ROBSON or ROBERTSON). Mary's parents were probably Joseph ROBISON and Grizzel Smith. Robert & Mary had at least 2 children; Grace McQUEEN b.1834 Twynholm who had an illegitimate child Isabella Anderson McQUEEN b.1858 Twynholm. James McQUEEN b.1831 Twynholm had 3 wifes; 1st wife was Jessie RICHARDSON b.1825 Dumfrieshire. James & Jessie married 1852 in Twynholm. They had at least 2 children; Mary McQUEEN b.1858 in Dumfries Town and Grace McQUEEN also in Dumfries Town. 2nd wife was Ann HENRY b.1828 Rerrick. James and Ann married in 1861 in Ellenbank, Kirkcudbright Town (Ellenbank was a Gentleman's home where I assumed she worked). Ann's parents were William HENRY and Ellen (Eleanor) McMYNE (McMINN) m.1814 in Rerrick. William's parents were Andrew HENRY & Mary THOMSOM m.1771 in Borgue. James and Ann had 5 children, only 1 survived. I am descended from that 1 surviving child, William Henry McQUEEN b. 1864 in Dumfries Town. 3rd wife was Sarah PATERSON. James & Sarah were married 1869 in Dumfries Town. They had at least 4 children. GORDON & McMYNE James GORDON married Helen McMYNE b. 1852, Dailly, AYR in 1875 in Rerrick (I have no children) KIRKPATRICK & McMYNE William KIRKPATRICK married Janet McMYNE b.1835, Dailly, AYR in 1859 in Kirkbean. Had a child Samuel KIRKPATRICK b. 1861 New Abbey, Kirkcudbright. MORGAN & McMYNE David McMYNE b. 1822 Rerrick married Marion MORGAN abt 1849 Dundrennan, Low Barend
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could assist with any information concerning Robert Shaw SINCLAIR. He was born about 1852 in Kudbrightshire and his parents are believed to be Farquhar SINCLAIR and Mary ANDERSON. I have located Farquhar in the 1881 census, in Girthon, with 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. Robert married Elizabeth BEATTIE (born about 1859 in Anworth) and she is found on the 1881census as head of household in Girthon with her 1 month old daughter. She and Robert migrated to Australia later in 1881. Also at the house with Elizabeth, is her niece, Maggie MONTGOMERY (born about 1867), indicating that either Elizabeth or Robert's sibling married a Montgomery. Any help is much appreciated. Regards, Nicki
Hi Listers, I am new to the list and erroneously sent my first mail to the "request" address rather than the "list" address. To make things worse, I did not save a copy of the mail in my "Sent" folder. I am interested in tracing my Great Grandmother, Isabella SHANNON. According to the 1881 and 1891 Census returns she was born in Dumfriesshire in 1849/1850. Her Marriage Certificate (married Jonas WELLS in 1974) shows her Father as Robert SHANNON (Occupation: Baker). As she was married in England (Workington, Cumberland), her Mother's name was not listed. My problem is, that the only birth entry that comes close is for an Isabella SHENNAN born 1849 in Kirkbean and lists her Father's (Robert) occupation as a ploughman. I can accept the different surname spelling and the fact that her Father could have changed occupations, but is it likely that someone who was born in Kirkbean would list their place of birth as Dumfriesshire rather than Kirkcudbrightshire ? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & Regards, David Wells Sydney, Australia ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi everyone, My name is Glenda Peterson. I'm tracing my father's family and have a Rosanna McNeil b.1841 who married John Knight in 1865 who was from Northumbria or therabouts in England. I have Kirkudbright as a place of birth and through LDS have turned up a Rosanna McNeil b. 18.08.1841 Rerrick, Kirkudbright with father William McNeil and mother Agnes Strachan. I'm not sure if this is the right person but the names William and Agnes appear in later generations. If anyone has any information on the McNeils or Strachans I would be interested. I'm very new to researching family history so will be glad to key in to various bits and pieces that come up on this site. Thanks, Glenda

WHAT A MYSTERY and starting back over from scratch: I am still trying to locate my Great Great Grandmother, Henrietta Kathyrn McCandlish or Candlish, who came over from Kirkcudbright Scotland somewhere between 1850-1860. Henrietta's father remarried after her mother's death and at the age of 18-21 Henrietta came to the United States. Henrietta came by ship, I was told, to the New York Harbor and then lived with her aunt in Iowa. Her aunts name might have been, Eliza Candlish, who later might have returned to Scotland. Henrietta married in Brookville, Iowa in January 27, 1859, to Fredrick C. Nawgel. I think they later moved to Bedford County Pennsylvania. I have not been able to find her on any immigrant list, marriage record, or census record for Iowa or Bedford County Pennsylvania with them listed. Henrietta's birthdate in the Bible and on her tombstone is June 5, 1837 and she died in August 18, 1900. I have these funeral cards in the family Bible: 1) William Candlish- b. 1800 d. July 24, 1879 *****Maybe Henrietta's father? 2) Catherine Grieve - Card states: Beloved wife of Thomas Davies who departed this life May 30, 1888. Toxteth Park Cemetery. *****Maybe she was Henrietta's sister and was adopted by the Grieves. Maybe later married a Conning. 3) James Conning-d. October 26, 1885 at 25 years of age. Toxteth Cemetery. *****Another husband or father-in-law? I have no idea who these people are, but they must be some importance as their cards were in the family Bible. I have called Toxeth Cemetery but keep getting a fax sound, so I sent a fax with a return email address, but don't know if they will reply. I have no other info and keep running into walls. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Cindy
Hi I have more information on JOHNSTON and wonder if anyone recognises these names: Thomas JOHNSTON (b1838, Gatehouse, Girthon) m Grace RIDDICK (b1841) in 1861 in Gatehouse of Fleet. Thomas JOHNSTON'S parents were Gordon JOHNSTON and Janet EWINS(?). Grace RIDDICK's parents were James RIDDICK and Elizabeth TEMPLETON. Thomas and Grace had following children: found on 1881 census: Gonna JOHNSTON (1869) - never heard of this name, possibly a typing mistake? David JOHNSTON (1871) Alexander JOHNSTON (1874) Agnes JOHNSTON (1874) Mary JOHNSTON (1876) Gordon JOHNSTON (1880) There are also the following children found on IGI: Margaret - 1867 Joan - 1869 Jessie - 1861 Elizabeth - 1865 Can anyone help with this further? Regards Victoria Germain (UK)
Dear Listers I had such a great response to my last message advising about my One Name Study that I thought I would post once more. I have been researching my own BORTHWICK family for a few years now but recently had a moment of great madness and registered to do a One Name Study! Hence this message to all the areas where I believe there are BORTHWICKS, with apologies for duplications to those on multiple lists. I have a Borthwick site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/ where, aside from information about my own family, I am posting all the Borthwick information I have collected and have been generously given by others - mostly email friends I have met via these Rootsweb lists. I would love to hear from anyone on these lists with a BORTHWICK in their family. I would also be grateful for any BORTHWICK information at all that people are willing to share with other researchers by posting it. There is a site map but if it is too time-consuming to look through my site to see what is missing (heaps!) I would be happy to tell you by email whether I do or don't already have any information you may be willing to share. Hi I am researching the following names: James STRUTHERS m Ann MARSHALL - son James STRUTHERS (b1858). James m Mary Ann KENNY in 1879 in Glasgow. They had children: Jessie (b1894) Isa (Isabella?) Unity Annie Maggie Mary James (had children Donald and Matty (Martha?)) William The children are in no particular order. Has anyone any connection to this family. Apparently they came from Gatehouse of Fleet area before moving to Glasgow. Many thanks Victoria Germain (UK).
Hi I have just found out from a great aunt that my KENNY/KERR ancestors settled in Gatehouse of Fleet(?) on their way from Ireland and not straight to Glasgow as previously thought. I have very limited information, but maybe someone will recognise these names: William KENNY m Margaret KERR and had daughter Mary Ann KENNY (b1859). Mary Ann married James STRUTHERS (b1858) on 16 May 1879 in Glasgow. Hopefully someone can help. Many thanks Victoria Germain
