James You are Fantastic. I will write off for the certificate this very afternoon. I've just arranged my very first visit to an LDS centre - having only just discovered I am fortunate to have one less than a mile away (Just never thought there would be one tucked away in this rural area of the Forest of Dean Gloucestershire so I hadnt looked.) My first action will be to order in any Kirkudbright films they have and then hopefully the family will appear at my finger tips. Well I can always hope. I do wish my father were still alive now I am actually getting somewhere with his family. He was so proud of his 'fraction' of Scottish ancestry - which he thought was 1/8 but i've now found to be slightly more - 3/16th - and had done really well in the few years he spent researching given that it was all manual - non computer. He may not have got very far back but without the data he had gathered I would still be working in the late 1800s instead of th earlies. Thanks again. In his 1984 book "SCOTLAND'S STORY", Tom Steel sez that changes in agricultural markets caused much emigration : "In 1850 alone, 10,000 left Carsethorn pier in Kirkcudbright for Canada". Have any lists been found/published for that time? My gr-granpa left Midlothian about 1850 and appears in the 1851 census of Canada near Stratford, Ontario. If you have some info about the emigration lists, I will appreciate a tip. Hello everyone! Here is a real challenge: James, or John, or Jack WATSON, a great-uncle or ggf of mine, sometime between 1820 and 1930. The only info I have on this individual is gathered from stories heard by me in childhood, and concern the fact that he drowned one Sunday while fishing in the River Dee, KKB when he was about 30 yrs old . A ditty of that time refers to this incident, loosely paraphrased as follows: "Had he ere been in God's house, where he should have been, He'd a ne'er been drowned in the river of Dee" (or something like that!) His Brother, or Son, (my GF), was Henry Watson, married to Alice Bartlett, moved to Bradford and Cottingley, Yorkshire. That is the sum total of my knowledge of my father's side of the family. Any Information would be gratefully received. Michael Watson Dallas, Texas

Dear Listers I have now received some Registry copies of marriage (GGG Grandparents) and birth/baptism - GG Grandfather George and his sister and brother. ie. Proclamation of Banns and Marriages dated 2nd December 1819 for Tongland in county of Kirkcudbright states: Alexander Miller from the parish of Balmaghie and Agnes Barcley of this parish after regular Proclamation for two successive sabbaths and married 2nd December 1819. Balmaghie county of Kirkudbright Births and Baptisms Registry entry dated 29/3/1825. Grissel C (?) What chance of finding something in "1825/6 Southern Scotland Counties Pigot's Directories " which I ordered a few days ago ? - Where is/was Laurieston - I found a note that it was in the old county of Kincardine but am none the wiser ? Is there a decent map anywhere that I can see how all these places fit together ? - Does anyone have any details of any Millar/Miller family anywhere in this area at this time ? (Where I suppose the area covers Tongland, Balmaghie, Laurieston). Is Durisdeer a possibility. I know I've seen some Millars there. Regards Joy
Allan Thanks Actually I just searched ALLTHEWEB.COM and surprisingly found Blairshinnoch - it had foot and mouth in April. I therefore conclude its a farm. Awful this as the other farm with an Adamson connection is White Laird Lochmaben and they had foot and mouth it at the same time. Dear Listers Wonder if someone can help. I recently found an entry on Scots Origins for a John Adamson and Elizabeth Anderson marriage in which I am interested. This is for John born about 1825 and Elziabeth about 1826 both in Scotland according to their Rochdale entries in the 1851 census and married Kirkgunzeon 5/11/1949. I am trying to work out how this John Adamson fits in with my Rochdale Adamson family and thought the marriage details might help.. They don't. All I got was a copy of a church register hand written list which confirmed the names and marriage date which I knew and listed John as being from Rochdale (which further confuse me) and Elizabeth as coming from somewhere indecipherable. I've searched the 1881 census for all Kirkgunzeon entries and the only entries which could possibly match are Blairshinnoch or possibly Old Blairshinnock. These are close neighbours in the census to an Anderson family (which has an Elizabeth so it does look likely) but I do wish that the clergy in 1849 had had hindsight to use better handwriting ! (Before anyone takes offense that was not meant seriously - you should see my writing !). A. Does anyone have any details of Blairshinnoch. B. What date do full marriage details start in Scotland. Given that I have the date of marriage can I get a full marriage certificate. Regards Joy

For some reason I was not able to send to the list as such. So am responding on N Lyons request. Someone a week or so ago mentioned they had MI's for Kirkudbright, and am wondering if there could be a look up for a Robert Todd born 1793 Kelton, and his wife Jane McColm Todd born 1794 Rerrick, my gg grandparents. They were living in Castle Douglas on Gas Street in the 1861 census so it would be after that. I would appreciate a look up. Thank you. Hi everyone, my great great grandfather was a James Garraway who emigrated to the US from Whitehaven England. The Garraways were in Whitehaven it looks at least by 1820. In looking at the records from across the border in Kirkcudbrightshire, it looks as if the Garraway family came from this county. Has anyone run across this name from this county??? The one record I have found is an Alexander Garraway married to Sarah MacCaddam on 24th Dec 1778 in Rerrick Parish. Thats it, I am fairly certain this is my Garraway, but have made no headway from this. Any help would be appreciated in how to pursue this line. Thanks, Barbara in Tennessee
I found this on a list of triva questions. As my maiden name is SKENE and some of the family chose the SKEIN spelling I had to laugh. "A group of Geese on the ground is a gaggle. A group of Geese in the air is a SKEIN". Marg
