    1. Fw: [D-G LIST] the name "Hans"/"Scotland and the Low Countries"/Medieval Galloway
    2. Paul D. Chilvers-Grierson
    3. Thought I'd send this to the KKB list as well, as the book mentioned further below on the Black Douglases may interest people here too, considering Threave is in the area. Paul For those interested in pursuing this further, Scottish publisher Tuckwell Press (http://www.tuckwelpress.co.uk) has a book called "Scotland and the Low Countries, 1124- 1994", edited by Grant G. Simpson, ISBN 1 898410 75 5, 240 pages, illustrated, hardback £25. I haven't bought it yet, but I intend to, as the Flemish connection seems to have some bearing on my ancestors, as I believe is the case for many Scottish families (Fleming is a case in point). Apart from the Flemish first name Vedast turning up in the 15th century in my Grierson line, one of my sidelines (Philip Morison, minister in Dunscore and Balmaghie in the late 18th century)leads to Irons in the St Andrews area who apparently traced themselves back to Le Fer, i.e. iron. Speaking of Tuckwell Press ("... seriously Scottish"), they have a book called "The Black Douglases: War and Lordship in Late Medieval Scotland, 1300-1455" by Michael Brown. This one is also available in a more affordable paperback version for £16.99 (ISBN 1-86232-025-X, 256 pages). This is about the Earls of Douglas, who ruled Galloway from Threave Castle near what is now Castle Douglas, and should be of particular interest to anyone wanting to know more about the historical background of Dumfries & Galloway. It is relatively recent, 1998. I had a chance to look through it in the Ewart Library last year, and having now tracked down the publisher have put it on my Christmas list. It is also available on amazon.co.uk, as is the hardback for £30. Hope this is useful to someone. 2. Cameron
    3. Hello listers, The 1851 Census shows David Cameron aged 50 years living at 6 Silver Street, Creetown (District 10; household No.96) with his wife Mary (Brown) aged 45, and several of their children. David Cameron was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in about 1801. I would like to find out the names of his parents. Perhaps they are on his death registration - not that I know when he died! Would some kind person look at the 1861 Census to see if he was still alive then? His wife Mary died in Creetown on 24 May 1871. I'd also like to know when they were married. The first child of whom I'm aware, is John Cameron born about 1826, probably in Kirkmabreck. Best wishes Sybil Cameron in Sydney

    3. Hello Vivienne, I'm searching for HALLIDAYs in the Galloway area. I cannot be precise at the moment, but I am trying to trace a Robert HALLIDAY who was born about 1812 and subsequently moved to England. His wife was called Isabella and I am hopefully about to find out her maiden name. When I have this then I will try to locate them in early 19thC Scotland. There might be a link with Lillias, but I don't really know at the moment. Best regards, Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "V. 2. JOY SALT
    3. Dear Listers No not quite gone on holiday yet - nearly packed - but as my husband was unexpectedly out tonight I treated myself to a session on Scots Origins as I have just received a death certificate I wanted to follow up. I have a puzzle which I thought I would leave the list to consider while I sun myself on the beach in Greece. Certficate is for Mary Miller whose graveyard inscription (Tongland 1856) refers to husband Aex (assume Alexander). Alexander is not mentioned on the certificate but Stepson Robert Miller is. This totally confused me - I hadn't got a Robert ! Assuming that Mary is Alexanders second wife and that the wife I already know about (my GGG Grandmother Agnes) didnt have a Robert where does Robert come from ? So I checked for a Robert Miller son of Alexander born Balmaghie and found one - and also found yet another wife, Grissel !! I have searched and searched and can find no Miller deaths to account for first wife, second wife or even Alexander himself. In fact no Miller deaths in Balmaghie for years and years except Mary. I can find no record of any other births except for the five I already had (2nd wife Agnes) and now Robert (first wife Grissel) and no other Miller marriages except 3 all to Alexander and all nicely spaced to include the 6 children - so - I conclude Alexander had 3 wifes 0 Grissel, then Agnes, then Mary. Details are below. What do you think - is this one, two or three Alexanders ? Why can't I find any death records ? Interesting to note that two of the second set of childen (wife two) seem to be named after wife one (Grissel McLansburgh). Did she die in childbirth - the dates seem to indicate that. I wonder if the third marriage is what prompted my GG Grandfather George and brother Laurie to move away down to Rochdale around 1850 ? One thing I have just done is request Roberts birth record and Grissel and Alexanders marriage record to confirm that this is Alexander a tailor in Laurieston. Any thoughts would be most welcome. 3. Hi Sybil: I have no knowledge of your Ramsey or C.L. Brown, however I do have a Peter Donabie BROWN born 1880 and a Agnes Brown born 1877 both in Glasgow. However oral history is that the Brown, Donabies and Houstons (all family names) came from Kirkcudbrightshire or Ayr. My Browns go back to William Brown born about 1805 who married Mary Houston? 1824 and had a son Hugh Brown born about 1829 who married Agnes Maitland from Irvine Ayrshire. They had a son Robert Livingstone Brown born 12 Dec. 1860 who married Annie Donabie and had three children, Agnes (Annie) 1877, Robert Livingstone born 1878 and Peter Donabie Brown born 1880. It is thought that Annie Donabie had a middle name of Agnes and that she was the daughter of Peter Henry Donabie and Annie Houston. Peter and Annie were married in Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. Peter Henry was the son of Peter Donabie. I realize that this is stretching it a bit but the similar names and the Kirkcudbrightshire connection makes me wonder if there is a connection. How is spring in Australia?
