To all, that requested a look-up on the 1873 KKD Marriages, I am sorry there will be a slight delay. I had an accident with a glass and a piece stabbed the palm of my hand, worst luck it was the one I write with. I'm to have surgery tomorrow and my hand will be out of action for a few weeks. I have reordered the film. Bye for now Margaret
Alistair Thanks for the response. I do hope I didnt sound like a moan yesterday. All previous research sorties have been so very enjoyable. This one, taken in a snatched hour from work (as I just couldnt wait to get to my fiche) proved to be just plain frustrating so I gave up and went back to work. I really do appreciate all the free research facilities and could happily volunteer myself, must be most rewarding when someone gets a 'hit', if it were not for a rather full time job. Roll on retirement. A quick check on LDS reveals that the fiche which awaits me tomorrow at the LDS centre is : (Books OPR 857a ; vols. 1-2) Contents: Baptisms, 1768-1855 -- Marriages, 1805-1854. Subjects Scotland, Kirkcudbright, Balmaghie - Church records I have already found my GGG Grandfather (Alexander Millar/Millers) 3 marriages, his eldest son Robert by his first wife (Grissel Mc Lansburgh), his 5 children (including my GG Grandfather George and 2 children named after the first wife !!) by his second wife (Agnes Barclay/Barcley)and the death of his 3rd wife (Mary Anderson). This last was attended by stepson Robert Millar which was wonderful as it set me wondering who on earth was Robert and lo and behold the first marriage came to light. What I am now trying to do is find any Miller/Millar entry in the area before the first of the marriages in 1917. I am in particular trying to find Alexanders birth which I assume to be late 1700s - a search on GROS which is where I found all the rest reveals Zilch. Nor can I find the record of any Miller death which I had been hoping to find. I noted down some McLansburgh entries yesterday so know that this family is from there. If I fail to find any Millers do I assume Alexander was born somewhere else and moved there with his first marriage or just that the records are incomplete ? Hello Listers, Would a kind soul look up John Crawford Logan GRANT please? He was born in Kirkendbright in about 1839. Hopefully he will show up on the 1841 Census and 1851 Census. At some stage he emigrated - as a youngish man - so he won't be on the later lists. Many thanks Sybil Cameron

Hello Listers, Would you please be able to help me find references to this family on the 1841 - 1891 Censuses; or on headstones in the Creetown Cemetery; or in obituaries: Peter BROWN married Elizabeth RAMSEY in about 1803 Children: 1. Mary BROWN b. 1805 at Creetown 2. Crawford Logan BROWN b. 1807 at Creetown 3. Agnes BROWN b. 1809 at Creetown 4. Barbara BROWN b. 1811 at Creetown Best wishes Sybil Cameron
Dear listers A question to which I am sure one of you has the answer. What is on a parish record fiche. Sounds a silly question I know but today I attacked the Balmaghie fiche. Lots of it was extremely difficult to read (expected) but not assisted by: A. The fiche reader being sited 18 inches too high for the chair B. The rapidly changing focus of my eyesight which means I don't wear glasses to read, do for distance and take them on and off for the PC (Off at the moment but..) C. The 2 grandchildren of the LDS site supervisor this morning who were lovely children but didnt seem to understand (and no-one told them) that they werent in the nursery. I had extreme difficulty concentrating on what my eyes were seeing because my ears were hearing too much too loudly! (Who revoked the rule that said children should be seen and not heard ....) D. The apparent random order of the fiche. I went through a series of birth records then it changed to another series 50 years earlier, followed by some marriages, then some deaths and then reverted to births covering the same period as the first set. This was about 1/4 way through the fiche. If I had had the time (had sneaked an hour off work) and the concentration I might have managed to work something out but gave up in total frustration and booked another session (attempting to avoid a session likely to coincide with the children). Is the fiche perhaps organised into separate churches or is it really just the random collection that it appeared ? Regards Joy
Hi List, well at long last I have found her death. Dear all, I am away for a week or so from the 7th Oct but not unsubscribing, so a slight delay in answering any e#mails will occur. Regards,James
Dear All I am safely returned from Greece with a super sun tan and will shortly return to my Pigots lookups for you which are filed ready and waiting for me. Sorry for the delay but : a. I had 92 emails to read - mostly Gen digests so that made more like 500 ! b. I received a set of birth / marriage certifcates through the post which was as usual very exciting especially as it had introduced a brand new name to my list ! I have practised with my family spreadsheet to get it into a better format than my last attempt to here it is as repost of my Surname interests. Some names I can go back for a lot more generations but I am currently concentrating on proving the more recent names before I try to get any further back on the others. The other exciting news is that while I was away my Balmaghie Fiche has been delivered to my local LDS centre so I plan to absent myself from work on Monday next for an hour or so for a good browse - in the hope of finding out more about my Alexander Miller the tailor from Laurieston and his 3 wives ! I thought I would post my own personal "brick wall" once more in the hope that someone somewhere comes across something . I have ROBERT WILSON, tailor, b. circa 1777 in Colvend, died 09.03.1856 at Barnbarroch. He was married to Margaret Tait. On Robert's death certificate it gives his parents as DUKE WILSON (carrier/carter)and AGNES AIKEN. I can find no record of a Duke Wilson anywhere, and think it may be a nickname. believe the Agnes Aitken may be the one bpt Barscraigh 29.12.1756, and it is unlikely that my Robert was the only child. He may well even have been one of the eldest.........soooooooooooooo......... If anyone out there EVER comes across a death post 1855 of a Wilson whose mother was Agnes Aitken pleeeeeeeeease let me know!!!! It would be such a boost to find "Duke"'s real name. This has been a mystery to me for ten years now......there must be another Wilson out there somewhere with these parents. Thanks Barbara

Hello Listers, Could a kind soul please help me find the parents of David Cameron? Their names may be on his headstone in Creetown Cemetary or in the Parish Register or somewhere else. David Cameron was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in about 1801. He married Mary Brown of Kirkmabreck shortly before 1826, then set up shop as a Nail Manufacturer/Blacksmith in Silver Street, Creetown. He was still alive in 1881 and may be the David Cameron of Creetown whose death notice is posted in the Wigtown Free Press Index on 3 April 1890 page 4 column h. He would have been 89 years old. He lived at 6 Silver Street, Creetown in the 1851 Census. He'd moved to St. John Street, Creetown by the 1881 Census. Here David had living with him his eight year old grand-daughter, Mary Agnes Cameron, b. 1873 at Dumfries. His wife, Mary Cameron (Brown), died in Creetown on 24 May 1871. Their ten children were: 1.
