I have noticed that you have sent many interesting and helpful findings through [email protected] I have sent several e-mails to that address, but must be sending to the wrong place because I have not received any responses! Perhaps you could help me? James, or John, or Jack WATSON, a great-uncle or ggf of mine, living sometime between 1820 and 1930. The only info I have on this individual is gathered from stories heard by me in childhood, and concern the fact that he drowned one Sunday while fishing in the River Dee, KKB when he was about 30 yrs old . A ditty of that time refers to this incident, loosely paraphrased as follows: "Had he ere been in God's house, where he should have been, He'd a ne'er been drowned in the river of Dee" (or something like that!) His Brother, Nephew or Son, (my GF), was Henry Watson, married to Alice BARTLETT, moved to Bradford and Bingley/Cottingley, Yorkshire. That is the sum total of my knowledge of my father's side of the family. I don't know if my gmother, Alice Bartlett was from Kirkcudbright, but I would be interested if any info can be found on her. Hope you had a splendid holiday in Greece. Any Information would be gratefully received. Thanks, Michael, from Dallas

    3. Hi List, at long last I have Mary Hunter's death certificate and she died on the 11 October 1884 at st Johns St. Creetown, aged 86, she was a Pauper when she died and her occuption was a Dressmaker Her parents were John Hunter, Sailor Deceased and Agnes Hunter, m.s. Heron Deceased Informant was her Nephew John Spence Carty Farm, Newtown Stewart. When I was first looking for her she was found on the 1841 census with Agnes and then could not be found in 1851, could sks have a look if possible on the 1851 census to see if she is living at St Johns Street Creetown? I just thought seeing as over the past weeks I have been emailing the list about Mary, you might like to know the final results cheers Maggie in Australia [email protected]

    3. I think it might be a Scottish habit to give apparent male names to females. In my family I have a girl called Clelland DUNLOP. One of my ancestors was a lady called Bruce ELLIS. As her last name was also spelt ALICE, she ended up on the IGI as Alice BRUCE and it took me years to find her. So never take anything for granted!! Jeanette (NZ) >

You called this a FICHE but it seems that it is really a FILM. The difficulty you remarked on in reading same, is due to the content and sequence of the original Registers I suppose, and not due to the LDS <filming> of same. LDS having many millions of films, and a backlog of records not yet handled by them, are not likely to invest time on interleaving helpful notations to assist the user. We hafta both navigate and drive ourselves!! As the Catalogue shows, that film has 11 items but only two are for Balmaghie. It's often a good move, to print the catalogue page before reading the film. The catalogue is in three formats: fiche, DOS-CD and WINDOWS-CD. 3. Dennis I've had a couple of requests for lookups on this film and have printed them off and will do my best. My only problem is that the LDS centre is only open twice a week and only during 'middle of the day hours' - when I am supposed to be at work. Not open long enough for me to warrant taking a day off either. I've got the film for a couple of weeks and plan to sneak out of work next week same as this week so as soon as I've finished my Balmaghie browsing I will be happy to look for these others. I'll get back to you if I find anything. Can you in return do me a little favour. My brother in law is getting interested in tracing his history and it has a recent South African involvement. 3. Hi Joy I'm scrounging! I noticed your film includes Colvend. If you should get the chance, please would you mind looking for a marriage 1820-1822-ish between Robert Anderson and Isabella Dobie. I'm doubtful you'll find it as it wasn't in the index, nor on IGI or Origins. But, who knows? As I say, only if you have the time. Thanks Allan Anderson (near Liverpool) Researching ANDERSON/DOBIE/MARTIN/BEGG/GIBSON (Kirkcudbright, Dumfries) KAYLL/KAYLE (IOM,Liverpool, etc) http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/allanganderson/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "JOY SALT" <[email protected]> Today I did a lot better and have identified that it is split into several parishes : Balmaghie (the one I want) Borgue Buitle Carshairn (can't read my own scribble) Colvern.

    3. Came across an odd entry on the Balmaghie parish register film. Agnes Stewart Mc Lellan lawful daughter of Samuel Mc Lellan (Teacher at Society Hal School) and Stewart Marshall his wife ! born 15/5/1848. Baptised 14/7/1848. Just thought I'd post this in case poor soul has been incorrectly searching for years for a 'man' called Stewart Marshall. Regards Joy

    3. Alistair Thanks, Not sure which film I've got but it certainly has mostly handwritten notices. I think it must therefore be #1067973 . I will check the number on monday and let you know. Today I did a lot better and have identified that it is split into several parishes : Balmaghie (the one I want) Borgue Buitle Carshairn (can't read my own scribble) Colvern. Now I know which bit I want I can go through it at my leisure. ( or next time I sneak out of work for a long lunch - on Monday) I think I may order Tongland and Kirkcudbright in next if I don't have any success with this one. I have spotted 3 birth entries with a Mary Miller (married to David Mc Kie (I think)) who must be about same age as Alexander or a bit younger - so suspect she may be Alexanders sister. There are very few Miller entries on this Balmaghie film and most I already have. I unfortunately don't have any names for Alexanders parents - that is where I am stuck. I could suspect a fathers name of Robert -as that is the name of his first son - but that could just be a false clue put in there to trip me up. I spent several weeks assuming fathers name was Alexander until I discovered older brother Robert. The primary source in handwriting, for 1768-1853 is #1067973 and hoorah! it probably has entries in it that have NOT been extracted to IGI or Printout. And note also, a lot of Borders events that are readable of film were NOT indexed into the OPR Index nor the Church Records CD. > I am in particular trying to find Alexanders birth which I assume to be late > 1700s - a search on GROS which is where I found all the rest reveals Zilch. If you know his parents' names, then finding his birth may be no great advantage. On the other hand, if those parent names are unproved then hope! that Alexander and his wife died in SCT after 1855 in which case the deaths entries should show the parentage incl. mothers' maiden surnames. And if the actual fiche # differs from 6901416, then do inform me 'cos I get my kicks as an amateur detective ;~) Cheers......... ALISTAIR
