I am looking for any records that would show where my ancestor lived and for how long. I am looking for William Douglas who left Kirkbean in 1775. I was wondering what was available to show me how long he had been there and where he came from. Thank you. Virginia
Hi Group, I'm researching CAMPBELL too. But the only one I have so far is Agnes CAMPBELL b. Sept. 30, 1770 Minnigaff, d. Apr. 6, 1863 Mochrum....dau. of John Campbell and Ann SEATON. Agnes m. John CLAVE. I'd love to hear from anyone in this line... Shelley CLAVE, BARR, THOMSON, SEATON, GRAHAM, MCDOWALL of the same areas.
Dear Stewart: This looks like your family, or at least those who were still living at home. And since Kilninian is part of Mull, you were right about the father coming from those parts. 1881 Census: 100 Ardgowan Street, Govan, Lanark Colin CAMPBELL/head/married/60/Gardiner jobbing/Kilninian, Argyll Margaret CAMPBELL/wife/48/Dunbarney Perth JamesCAMPBELL/son/unmarried/28/baker/Kirkcudbright Robert CAMPBELL/son/unmarried/17/Clerk Telegraph/Tongland Harry CAMPBELL/son/unmarried/16/Clerk Telegraph/Tongland Elizabeth CAMPBELL/daughter/13/Tongland Alexander GALBRAITH/lodger/uynmarried/24/Medical Student/Brosshill, Ayr Good hunting! Dear Stewart: I found Donald CAMPBELL in the 1881: He was at Haz Elden House, Mearns, Renfrew, in the houshold of John ANDERSON, corn factor. Donald is shown as servant, unmarried, aged 24, Coachman Domestic, born Tongland. Colin CAMPBELL, unmarried, aged 22, born Kirkcudbright, is a lodger in the household of Alexander McNAUGHTON, Railway Mineral Guard, aged 35, born Ardrossan, Ayr, with wife Mary R. aged 34, born Dalry, Ayr. Colin is shown as Railway Mineral Guard. John CAMPBELL born 1855 is less certain. There are three possibles: Skyreburn Branch Post Office, Anwoth, KKD Mary MASON/head/W/48/Postmistress/Keir, DFS William MASON/son/U/19/Not in school/19/British Subject, United States John CAMPBELL/lodger/U/26/Wood Merchant/Dalry KKD 18 King Street, Kelton, KKD in the houshold of David WRIGHT, grocer, aged 63, born Ruthwell, DFS John CAMPBELL/boarder/U/26/Post Boy/Girthon KKD (others in this household are David's wife, Mary, and daughter Mary who is married to Robert GAW, the GAW children, Thomas THOMSON, also a boarder, aged 28 and born Kirkcudbright, Posting Master, and Maggie SMITH, visitor, aged 28, born Penninghame, Wigtown South Quintinespie, Balmaghie, KKD John CAMPBELL/head/General Merchant/unmarried/27/born Balmaghie, KKD Jane CAMPBELL/sister and visitor/unmarried/31/Balmaghie Margaret CAMPBELL/servant cousin/unmarried/29/General Servant/born Tongland Robert HARPER/servant/unmarried/17/Draper/Grocer's apprentice/born Girthon, KKD William KEGIE/servant/Married/62/Tailor/Edinburgh This last one looks promising because of the cousin who was born in Tongland. Cheers, Jill

I am looking for information on William Douglas born about 1754. He set sail for PEI on the Lovely Nelly in 1775. The passenger list stated that he was 21 years old and that he was from Kirkboan, Galloway. That probably is Kirkbean. I can't find any information on his birth or his parents. He did marry Catherine (Kitty) Millar in PEI. Thank you for your time. Virginia E. Wilson
Hi Jill : I am still going through the pile of info you sent the other week, which I am having fun sorting out, there was loads of little GEMS ! of info in there and this comes up trumps !! with information I have found. In te 1881 census John Campbell was still at Baligown a widower with daug Ann & sister Helen Umd: there was ALSO ! a Colin Campbell employed as a farm servant and referred to as a Nephew born aged 19 b. Tongland. That led to this.. Colin Campbell and a Margaret Ferguson Duncan of Tongland family as follow,s .. John Duncan Campbell b. 26 Feb 1855 Donald Colin Campbell b. 15 Jan 1857 James Beaumont Neilson Campbell b. 11 Feb 1859 COLIN CAMPBELL ( in Mull 1881 ) b. 13 Mar 1861 Robert Duncan Campbell b. 12 Jul 1863 Henry Duncan Campbell b. 15 Jun 1865 Elisabeth Neilson Campbell b. 26 Nov 1867 This would appear to be the family that you have found in Glasgow 1881, and I,ll go over your other info later. My father said many times that we had folk in Kirkcudbright, this seems certain to be them, and I am now convinced that you were absolutely spot on when you suggested that Alexander C .and Catherine McKinnon were the parents to Archibald C. my Grt Grt Grandfather who married Ann MacNeil, I,ll send you a copy of what I have to date after your Australian trip. Again , many thanks for the help you have given, and for pointing out this family in Glasgow in 1881 census . Best Regards Stewart

Hi John : Thanks for your reply and offer of help . I only hope this family were still there in 1881. Colin Campbell m. Margaret Ferguson Duncan (somewhere) There family were born at Tongland , and as follow,s. John Duncan Campbell b. 26 Feb 1855. Donald Colin Campbell b. 15 Jun 1857. James Beaumont Neilson Campbell b. 11 Feb 1859. Colin Campbell b. 13 Mar 1861. Robert Duncan Campbell b. 12 Jul 1863. Henry Duncan Campbell b. 15 Jun 1865 Elisabeth Neilson b. 26 Nov 1867. Now I think ?? that the father Colin Campbell was born on the Island of Mull, and is connected to my lines, and would like to get his age on the census and also to see if he had any other family. Meantime, thanks again for your help and look forward to hearing from you. Ragards Stewart Campbell in Aberdeen - Shire..

Hi : Has anyone on this List got a copy of the 1881 census for Tongland, that would be happy to do a look up for me. Regards Stewart Campbell
Maxwelltown is now part of Dumfries. As they did not wish to join Dumfries the town records were burnt in the 1920's
Hello Listers, Would a kind soul be able to help me find Peter BROWN. In the Creetown Cemetery, there is a gravestone for: "Peter BROWN lost at sea 20 October 1810 aged 38". Peter had an elder brother named Capt. John Brown b. 1764; d. 5 Jan 1806 aged 42 - who was probably also a seafarer. Their parents were John Brown (tenant of Belhazie) and Agnes SHAW. Would there be a story in the Wigtown Free Press or other newspapers about Peter's shipping accident in 1810? I'd be very grateful for your information. Best wishes Sybil Cameron

Help please Can anyone suggest how I find my GG Grandfather George Adamson. I have his 1851 census entry in Rochdale as born in Scotland but I havent a clue where. There are Adamsons all over the place in Scotland. I would expect it to be Dumfrieshire or Kirkcudbright from other family connections but thats as close as I can guess. Any ideas. Do I need a parish register in Rochdale to find his marriage record with Ann Holden (whos name I've got from the birth certificate of one of the children - not my G Grandmother Jannet Bells as she was born too early !). Where do I get hold of such a register without getting up to Rochdale which is not possible at the moment. The children were christened, and Jannet Bell was married at Providence Chapel High Street Rochdale Lancs so I suppose this marriage could have been there as well ?
