    1. ANDERSON, Blacksmiths
    2. Alan Baillie
    3. Hi all I'm new to the list (and perhaps just dropping in for a visit, so to speak) as it's only recently that I've discovered a Kirkcudbright connection in my family. My g-g-g-grandfather's brother, Thomas ANDERSON, born at Crossgatehall in the parish of Bunkle, Berwickshire, moved to Galloway in the early part of the 19th century and married Isabella HATHORN in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire, in 1817. They had one child in Kirkinner and several more in Kirkcudbright. The Anderson menfolk were almost all blacksmiths (and two are described as "noted horse doctors" - which reminds me of Groucho Marx elbowing his way to the front of the crowd shouting "Let me through, I'm a doctor! Where's the horse?") and I see from a recent message on this list that a Thomas ANDERSON appears in Pigot's 1825 directory at The Smithy, High Street, Kirkcudbright. I think he must be my man. The known children of Thomas ANDERSON and Isabella HATHORN or HAWTHORN are: John ANDERSON, christened at Kirkinner 12 April 1818 William ANDERSON, christened at Kirkcudbright 23 October 1819, probably the blacksmith at Bladnoch, Wigtownshire, who married his cousin Matilda Anderson Margaret ANDERSON, christened at Kirkcudbright 16 March 1824, presumably died in infancy Margaret ANDERSON, christened at Kirkcudbright 24 February 1826 Jean Fair ANDERSON, born at Kirkcudbright 26 February 1832 Mary ANDERSON, born at Kirkcudbright 23 December 1833 I'd very much like to hear from anyone who might be connected to any of the above, or to any other blacksmiths named Anderson, even if the connection isn't immediately obvious. Or is there any kind soul with access to monumental inscriptions in Kirkcudbright who might be able to find any related deaths? (By the way, the ANDERSON family is intertwined with the FAIR family in Berwickshire; Thomas's mother was Jean FAIR; his half-brother Peter, who preceded him to Kirkinner, married Agnes FAIR (these were the parents of the Matilda ANDERSON mentioned above); and Agnes's sister Magdalen or Matilda married Andrew McADAM also from Kirkinner, so both families have Galloway connections.) Hoping to hear from youse all. Cheers Alan

    1. Kirkmabreck 1851-1861 census?
    2. Corkette
    3. HELP!!! Does anyone have access to the 1851or 1861 census returns for Kirkmabreck? We have found our family in the 1841 census at Creetown 7,2 Old Street 25 VERNON, Samuel, 30, sawyer VERNON, Jane, 25, Scotland VERNON, John, 14 VERNON, Samuel, 12 VERNON, Stewart, 10 VERNON, Marion, 2 There is also a James (our direct ancestor) who must have been away at sea on census night. He would have been 18. We are now trying to connect an Alexander Vernon who would have been born circa 1848. We found him with our James, on a Vessel "Oak" at Census Place: Bootle Cum Linacre, Lancashire, England in 1881. Suspect that this Alexander Vernon married Hannah McLachlan 21 Oct 1867 Kirmabreck and that he might be a brother to our James.

    1. Re: Searching the web
    2. JOY SALT
    3. A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all who replied so quickly to my cry for help. I hope I have included you all in my TO list - I've only opened 'personally addressed' mail today and no *rootweb mails yet as I've been too busy working on my website. I've now added some more carefully chosen keywords to my Index page - which I've built with LEGACY so its put them in for me as META Tags. I had a problem initially as my husband and I have no common descendant so I couldn't simply build a single ancestral chart so my initial attempt was to combine two Ancestral charts together - a good experience from seeing how web pages connect together but I had a problem with some hyperlinks as I had capitalised some files when I renamed them ! An 'inspiration' gave us a joint child to build a common ancestry - this is Tinka the dog - but hes now just a dot on the chart ! I've rebuilt the site using a different format, Pedigree instead of Ancestral and had a little play to customize it a bit and its now loading up. I also removed all my notes as there are so many in there, as I scrape in lots of odds and ends and working notes, that it was difficult to see the wood for the trees. Hopefully it will be OK this time. Once I've checked the website works OK I will study all the advice you have given me about registering with the search engines and hopefully soon my family will be findable to everyone. Regards Joy PS. My poor brother in law. My sister was so fascinated reading about all her ancestors today she spent all day on the web and didnt get anything else done !

    2. JOY SALT
    3. Help please I'm in the process of setting up my new family tree on the web - this time I've built it myself not using FTM - but my husband has asked a very valid question. how do people find my website. ie. How does it get registered on the various search engines. I've tried to find it via Google and Alltheweb and I can't. I've set up a Freeserve site - do they not get included or do I have to formally register something somewhere ? regards Joy PS: When I have sorted out the odd missing hyperlink etc I will post the address of the site.

    2. Peter & Joan Brown
    3. Maggie You may have looked at the Parish Death Records already, but in case you haven't, Vol 6 of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright MIs states that in the OPRs with the Registrar General - 873 Kirkmabreck there are Deaths 1820-54. Creetown is in the Parish of Kirkmabreck. There are no Hunters in the MIs for Kirkmabreck, but there are some Herons - Regards Peter maggie wrote: > Hi List, > I think this is my last hope, could sks have a look for a death notice for > AGNES Hunter {Heron} born abt 1771, died between 1851 and before the > civil records started in 1855. 1. Dalbeattie Churchyard
    2. Does anyone know of a cemetery at or near Dalbeattie called the "Dalbeattie Churchyard?" This cemetery is different from the Dalbeattie Cemetery at the end of Albert Street. I'm looking for the burial place of John Lowden Clachrie. His death is recorded in Dumfries (District No. 821; Entry No. 193) on 12th May, 1894 at 15 Wallace Street, Dumfries; John Clachrie aged 82 (Sailor) Widower of Jane Coates; son of: David Clachrie (Labourer) Deceased and Elizabeth Clachrie m.s. Donaldson. Cause: Paralysis - 8 days as certified by M. Ferguson MD; Informant: Mary Clachrie, daughter; Registered on 15 May 1894 at Dumfries. He is thought to be buried in the Dalbeattie Churchyard, but I could find no such place in Dalbeattie. Perhaps I didn't know where to look. We found his father, David, buried in the Colvend Parish Churchyard, but we didn't find John Lowden buried here. We found his son, John, buried in the Dalbeattie Cemetery at the end of Albert Street, but we didn't find John Lowden buried here. Could John Lowden be buried in the Dumfries Churchyard, and I misunderstood the person who gave me the information?

    1. 1866 Shipwreck Vernon Dargavel story
    2. Corkette
    3. Simply had to share the following extract from a Wigtown Free Press. Many thanks to Phil Reed for doing the legwork on this. I haven't been able to tie them in to my Vernons yet but any fellow researchers researching the Dargaval name will be interested to note that my research indicates that the widow was Elizabeth Dargaval and the bereaved children were Samuel VERNON - M Birth: 26 Jul 1861 Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright, Samuel married Maggie Thomson at Creetown 1900/27/12 3g (Died 16 Sept 1936 age 76) Elizabeth VERNON - F Birth: 4 May 1863 Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright, d 28 Oct 1899 age 36.(c.1863) John Dargavel VERNON - M Birth: 22 Dec 1864 Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright, d. West Virginia USA July 1910 age 45(c.1865). Jane Stewart VERNON -F Birth: 11 Jul 1867 Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright, note Jane was born 8 months after the wreck so the poor widow had alot more to contend with. CREETOWN - Wreck And Loss Of Life 15th Nov 1866 One of the most melancholy events that have taken place here for many years occurred on Saturday night and has cast a feeling of sadness over the whole community. The schooner ROSE of this place, owned and commanded by Captain John Vernon, and manned by William Vernon, brother of the above, and a boy named Paterson, belonging to Newton -Stewart, was driven ashore near Barnfoot on Saturday night by one of the severest gales we have had this season. The Rose was bound for Garliestown from Barrow, with a cargo of slates, but being caught in the gale and having her sails torn away, the captain determined on running for Creetown, but being too early for the tide, and not being able to hold out, she struck and in a short time was driven about at the mercy of the waves. The crew took to the small boat, but by some means or other were thrown out into the sea, and after some struggling with the waves William Vernon and the boy succeeded in gaining the shore, but the captain after cal! ling out for the other two to ''swim for their lives'' was never seen by them more alive, and it is supposed he had been stunned by a blow from some piece of the wreckage or something of that sort, as he was an expert swimmer. Although there are a number of houses close to the scene of the wreck and it occurred about 11 o'clock at night nothing was seen or heard of the catastrophe until all help was in vain. The body of the captain was found on Sabbath morning about a mile off high water mark and was conveyed home to Creetown, to his sorrowing and bereaved widow and their three children, the eldest of whom cannot be over six years of age. Deceased was a man in the prime of life, and was much respected by all who new him. Much sympathy is felt for his bereaved family, as the vessel is become a total wreck, and for half a mile the shore at Broompool exhibits a most melancholy spectacle, being strewed all along with portions of the vessel twisted and torn into a thousand piec! es. With the husband and with the vessel are gone the sole means of support of this afflicted family, and we understand their circumstances are such as to warrant the hope that the benevolent will take up their cause. - Dumfries Courier.
