A couple of days ago, I saw reference to the Kirk session minutes for Kirkcudbright being indexed in 1999. Does anybody know if the indexing has been completed? My believe is that Kirk sessions minutes are only available at the archives in Scotland. Is that true? Or does LDS have microfilms? Are the records at the archives original documents or microfilms? Thanks, Darryl

Hallo All I am making good progress with my SCOTT ancestors thanks to a lot of help from Joy Salt and others on the list. I have now established that my G.Grandfather's Grandfather Robert Scot married Elizabeth McJORE (later Mc George) and the first child Isabella was christened in Ruthwell, Dumfries in 1812. The family soon moved to Urr in Kirkcudbright where in 1814 their second child Andrew was born, The next 4 children were all christened in Urr, the last in 1832. I have established that Isabella married John Swan and Joy Salt found their graves in Dalbeattie. I however have not found any of the other graves nor have I found a record of them in the 1881 census. Could I ask some help please with an MI lookup in Urr for the following Scott's as well as a lookup in the 1841 Census for the family in Urr. Father: Robert Scott born about 1790 = age at 1841 51 years Mother Elizabeth McJore (Mc George) Scott born about 1892 = age at 1841 49 years Daughter Isabella married to John Swan born 1812 = age at 1841 = 29 years Son Andrew born 1814 : age at 1841 = 27 years Son Robert born 1817 : age at 1841 = 24 years Son Thomas born 1820 : age at 1841 = 21 years Son Samuel born 1829 : age at 1841 = 12 years Son William born 1832 : age at 1841 = 9 years My Great Grandfather Samuel is the son of one of these brothers Any assistance would be greatly appreciated Dennis Pretorius Krugersdorp, South Africa Tel +27-11-769-2400 Cel +27-83-324-2238 Web Site : www.krugersdorp.org E-mail :[email protected]

Dear List, A few months ago I mentioned to the list that I had come across an excellent source for Scottish history books, namely the Tuckwell Press near Edinburgh. I mentioned that I was thinking of getting the Book "Black Douglases" and, at some stage, "Scotland and the Low Countries 1124-1994", in order to explore the Flemish connection to Scotland and Dumfries & Galloway. Well, I have now purchased "Black Douglases" (my Christmas present to myself ;-))and am working my way through it, as the Douglases' seat of power was Threave Castle near Castle Douglas, so the book has a lot of background information about the region and the families in it in medieval times. The reason I mention this is because you may also want to take advantage of what I discovered when I finally went to order the book: They have a revamped website (www.tuckwellpress.co.uk), you can now order online, and: they deliver anywhere in the world free of charge, which those of you like me living outside the UK can probably also appreciate. The book took exactly a week to reach me in Germany (obviously from a separate warehousing company), but before I ordered, I filled out the online form to request a printed catalogue. Talk about fast - I did that very late Wednesday evening, so they probably didn't see it till Thursday, and the postman delivered it here in a village in Germany a day after that, on Friday morning at 9 a.m.! I have no connection with the company, but that really impressed me, and I expect to return to their site when I've finished the first book! Hope you are all enjoying the pre-Christmas period, and it's not as cold where you are as it is here (easterly wind from Siberia)!! Hi Paul and others researching Kirkcudbright and surroundings. I have not read the "Black Douglasses that you mentioned but I just finished the "Scotland and Low Counties 1124-1994". For anyone researching the derivation of Scottish names and other information, I would highly recommend reading this book. I obtained it for a 2 week period free from the county Library, they had to borrow it from a University as they did not have it in stock. But it is a wealth of information about things Scottish and the fact that many Scottish Regiments served with William of Orange in the war with France, then returned to Scotland with Flemish wives and in some cases emigrants from Flanders. Apparently, some of Scottish names and words came from Flemish. I found it very interesting. Hallo All I had an early christmas present when Joy Salt found an MI for me in Dalbeattie for a long lost link in my search for the parents of a Samuel SCOTT. Isabella SWAN born SCOTT, the sister of my Samuel SCOTT's father was buried in Dalbeattie and because of that connection I found Isabella's record in the 1881 census which gave her birthplace as Ruthwell. In the LDS IGI I found a likely set of parents and a birth date for Isabella - her mother being Elizabeth McJore x Robert Scott. Now I can get to my question - is the McJore surname a variation of the Mc George surname found in Kircudbright ? Is there anybody on one of the lists who researches either the McJore/McGeorge or the Scott surname with RUTHWELL links? Any guidance would be appreciated. Seeking parents of Alexander MCEUNE, d. 17 Nov 1777 in Borgue, & Helen JOLLEY, d. 20 Mar 1812 in Gatehouse of Fleet. They married on 30 Mar 1769 in Borgue Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. They had the following children: Janet, b. abt Jan 1770 William, b. abt. Jul 1771 James , b. abt. Mar 1773 Grissel, B. abt. Aug 1775 John, b. Abt Jun 1777 They were all b. in Senwick, Borgue Parish. John went to Niagara, Ontario in 1801 and died there in 1824. I don't have any information about the others, except that William settled John's estate after his death in Niagara. I would appreciate any information about this couple and their other 4 children and about John's life before 1801. I think my husband is a descendant of John, but haven't been able to prove it so far. Thanks very much for any info about any of the others that any of you may have. Marg McEuen
