1. Re: Agnes Gordon of Balmaghie
2. Sheena Jones
3. Hi Jill Thanks very much for the info. Apart from her birth, have you come across this Agnes in any censusus? I don't know where to look for her. My Agnes's son, Robert Gordon Clark, married Margaret Vallance on 9 March 1960 in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Her grandchildren, all born in Paisley, were Jessie, 10 Feb 1861 Jessie Brisbane, 21 Oct 1862 Agnes Gordon, 5 Feb 1865 Robert, 7 Apr 1867 Agnes Gordon, 2 Jan 1870 Margaret, 29 Mar 1873 Jean Wyllie, May 1877 Sarah, 1880 Grace, 1883 There is no David, the paternal grandfather's name. The maternal grandparents were Hugh Vallance and Janet Fulton Brisbane. All 4 grandparents' names are on Robert and Margaret's marriage certificate. I don't know if it's significant, but in the next generation (my mother, aunt and uncles) they did not follow the naming pattern for boys either. The eldest son was called Gordon. Do you have any connection with the Gordon of Balmaghie in the Robert Burns poem? See http://www.robertburns.org/encyclopedia/GordonofBalmaghieThomasd1806.399.htm l Regards Sheena ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill Dakin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 09, 2002 7:46 AM Subject: Agnes Gordon of Balmaghie > Hello Sheena: > > I have checked out my GORDON database (descendants of Thomas GORDON > 1670-1730 and Jane HOUSTON) and the only possible Agnes GORDON I can find is > one born in 1799 at Borgue. 1. Gordon, Balmaghie, Agnes Gordon
2. Sheena Jones
3. I only have one fact about Agnes Gordon. Her natural son, Robert Clark, was born 8 Nov 1829 in Balmaghie. The father was David Clark. Robert was later known as Robert Gordon Clark, and the Gordon name passed down for the next 2 generations. Does anyone have information about Gordons which might help me to trace Agnes's family? Regards Sheena

1. Scottish Clan and Sept DNA testing proposals
2. I was asked to post this on other lists by [email protected] to gauge the level of interest. Dear All: There is an emerging interest in looking at the possibility of developing a database of the DNA markers for the Scottish Clans and Septs. The Scottish clans are very unique in that the Clans have been identified and family relationships tracked for hundreds of years. Some Clan family have documented histories stretching back to before 1000 AD ( and some back to 500AD) . So this leads to some interesting possibilities of identifying current clan and sept family members and determining if the Scottish ancestry line can be identified. Some have cautioned: be careful because you may find out that you are not who you think you are :-). Non-paternity events were as frequent then as they are now. There is also an interesting mailing list here on Rootsweb : [email protected] It turns out that a couple of factors make this a very interesting study for the Clans to be involved in. A: The mtDNA passes down from mother to daughter only. So the matriarch of the family becomes clearly identified and traceable. Scottish history is one of the few in the world where female lineage was often documented. Note that non paternity events don't occur in this DNA since obviously the mother knows her daughter is her offspring. B: The Y DNA passes from father to son. There we can again provide a clear line of potential coordination between the written documentation and the DNA markers. There are some other fine points of the DNA identification and you can find out a lot more in the archives of the mailing list. Anybody that is really interested in participating should please reply to me at the email address below or reply to this message post. We need about 6-10 people for each group to make it meaninful. I will made arrangements to have this study posted as well. Please send or list only your surname , contact info and potential Clan association. I don't want to clog up the archives with a lot of "me too" emails and board posts. :-) Any comments or questions are appropriate to post. Someone will then contact you for further details and how to proceed. Please note there will probably be cost of some amount for the DNA test. I don't know what that amount is for the test but it is probably about $250. My initial survey indicates that we will want the 23 marker DNA test to get some definitive answers. I expect to get more details next week. Please feel free to pass this message along to other mailing lists and boards that may have a high per centage of Scottish Clan or Sept descendants. Should be an interesting database over the months and years :-) Was that my Chief ??? Best Regards John A Hansen [email protected] Clan Board and List Admin

1. Taking a break - my files are in Suuuuch a mess
2. JOY SALT
3. Dear All You may have spotted that I have been a little quiet in the past month. Thats because in the run up to and run down from the Christmas break I got all my mail and my family research notes into such a mess that I have been spending most of my time just trying to keep my head above water. I have now had to admit defeat. My own family lines have advanced so well in the past months, thanks mainly to these lists. For Christmas I produced a family book for my uncle - the book which would have been for my parents if they had not both died in the past year. He was absolutely delighted and it made the effort involved well worth while. Now I have decided to leave my family as it is for a month or so and see what I can do with my husbands Staffordshire lines which I havent really done anything with so far. (I dont even have birth dates for 3 of his grandparents). As well as that I need to go through all the entries in my family lines (4000+) and review all the rubbish which accumulates in there as a result of my untidy habit of scraping in notes from everywhere in case they may come in useful some day - which of course some often do. +I have lots of microfiche which havent even made it under the reader yet through lack of time. The one thing which is constantly at the back of my mind, every time I switch on the PC, is that I promised to do more MI lookups for Kirkcudbright. Can I please apologise for those I havent done and now put them to one side. I absolutely hate saying I will do something and then not doing it and I am really sorry. If anyone has any specifics they want looking up or if I owe anyone any other information then please email me off list and I will see what I can do. I think I took on too many lookups last time and Time and my Eyes and Neck couldnt keep up with the typing up. I will be back with my own family some time in March as I have a week off then which we will be spending baby- sitting my husbands grandchildren in Huddersfield. This of course is close to Rochdale so I am planning daily visits down there to the Local studies centre, cemetery etc - and maybe I can knock down some more brick walls. As soon as I am back I will resubscribe and pick up on the latest adventures of my Lancashire and Scottish families. Regards and good hunting in the meantime to everyone Joy
