1. CUMPSTON
2. Glenys Marriott
3. I am new to this list, spending most of my time researching in Yorkshire and Cumbria. What has taken me over the waters is CUMPSTON castle which I have tracked down to the parish of Twynholm, care of the Dumfries and Galloway on line census search. It is the only place I have found so far in the UK with this name, and I am interested if anyone can tell me about its history, or if any of you have research which includes the name CUMPSTON. The name is now very rare - just 46 entries from the 1901 census for England and Wales, and most of the names can be tracked back to Brough in Westmoreland. There are however over 7000 in America and many more in Australia, all from early emigration. I would welcome any connections or leads you can offer Best wishes Glenys in Bishopdale www.bishopdale.demon.co.uk Web site for the Upper Yorkshire Dales Family History Group Seeking CUMPSTONs everywhere Member of the Guild of One Name Studies

1. Kirkcudbright to Oxford County, Ontario: McMiken, Henderson, Dalziel, Gemmell, Bell
2. Daniel H. MacMeekin
3. My great great grandfather Samuel Douglas McMiken emigrated about 1845 from Girthon Parish in Kirkcudbrightshire to Upper Canada (Ontario). In researching the family on both sides of the Atlantic, I’ve noticed that many surnames common in Kirkcudbrightshire were also common in Blandford and Blenheim Townships in Oxford County, Ontario. In particular, I’ve noted in addition to my McMIKENS (of various spellings) the HENDERSON, DALZIEL, GEMMELL, and BELL surnames. Individuals in the Canadian side of the McMIKEN family married a HENDERSON, a DALZIEL, and a BELL, while others on the Scottish side married a GEMMELL and a BELL. It certainly would be natural for an emigrant to settle down near those who he knows, or at least knows of, from the old country. I wonder if any listers can link Kirkcudbrightshire emigrants to Oxford County, Ontario, or even to Blandford or Blenheim Townships in that county. Cheers. Dan MacMeekin

1. Scotland middle name IGI Index now available
2. Hugh Wallis
3. Dear listers I have subscribed just to make this announcement and will be unsubscribing immediately as I have no known Scottish connections in my own research. I have just uploaded my Scotland IGI Middle Name index at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis. This adds Scotland to the English counties for which I have created such an index. I believe that middle names are an invaluable resource for finding clues to family relationships. Strangely I have seen very little written about their use as research pointers in any of the literature, nor have I seen this issue discussed much on the mailing lists. I have not seen any middle name indexes or search tools available anywhere either. BUT - often a person's middle name is the same as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother or reflects some other familial connection (maybe the name of a patron or benefactor). It may also be the father's surname for births occurring out of wedlock. It seems obvious to me, therefore, that they have significant value in genealogical and family history research. I have found nearly 39,000 different middle names (some of which are obvious transcription errors for each other) appearing in over 780,000 of the christening/birth/adult baptism and marriage records on the IGI for this region. This is out of a total of over 6 million christening/birth/adult baptism and nearly 4 million marriage records (representing half that number of marriages, of course, since there are two records in the IGI for each marriage) for these churches/chapels. This is all of the entries in the IGI for Scotland that have been extracted as part of the controlled extraction program. I have not yet checked the parents' names on the baptism records for additional middle names - that is a much longer task which I may or may not be able to do. As always a warning about using the IGI is necessary. It is ONLY an index and is full of transcription errors. However it has been a mammoth undertaking on the part of the LDS and is an invaluable aid to research. Nevertheless, it bears repeating that there is no substitute for viewing the original records (or at least fiche or film of them). The IGI does assist you in locating those records and so narrowing down your area of search. 1. Robert Bell b 1789,, Scot
2. Seeking information about 2nd Great grandfather, Robert Bell b abt 1789 probably in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scot. and wife Jean/Jane Gillespie b 1802, same place. They were married in Troqueer in 1823 and immigrated to US probably in 1841 with Children: Agness b abt 1829/1830 Thomas b Apr 1833 William b 4 Aug 1835 Also immigrating at the same time with them was Robert's sister Agness , who was married husbands Hughie Jones and Andrew Cunningham . I'm trying to find out who were the parents of Robert and Jane. The LDS records have a Thomas Bell and Janet Pagon of Troqueer who would have been the right age to be parents of Robert but I need more proof. Can anyone there help me? Much thanks if you and also if you can't. Best Wishes, Ann Reed Morrisville,PA, USA
