Hi: My ancestor David Watson b.1782 at Fordoun. He enlisted in the Royal Artillary also, as he was mentioned as a Pensioner in the 1851 census from that regiment. I wrote to the PRO near London and from there I hired one of their accredited researchers who found for me his military record. He was aboard ship as a gunner under a Lt. Philpot in the 1812-14 war against the Americans and stationed in Halifax. Although, no factual relation to your ancestor, there are some similarities. I often wondered why the R.A. instead of a highland regiment.
