My ancestor, James Strachan FULLERTON, left the Benholm area of Kincardine about 1780 for Halifax, Nova Scotia. While there he apparently joined a Masonic lodge that had been founded by Brethren belonging to Major Anthony Farrington's company of the 4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery, which was stationed in Halifax from 1781 to 1784. I know of no connection between J.S.F. and the military but nearly ten years of his life are unaccounted for and I am trying to determine if he might have been in this artillery unit or some other that would account for the missing time. Does anyone recognize this Artillery unit as one from Angus or Kincardine? Or would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to locate such information? Thanks in advance! Wallace W. This Artillery Unit is part of The Royal Regiment of Artillery (British Army) which was made up of The Royal Garrison Artillery formed 1716, The Royal Field Artillery formed 1716 and the Royal Horse Artillery formed 1793. The records for the British Army are at the Public Records Office and I suggest you check out their Website for Military records. If James Fullerton served in this Regiment then you can get details of his service from records of discharge. These are available from the LDS FHC's or the PRO. For the period you are looking for you need to know the Regiment.
