I have sent part of this message to the Aberdeenshire list but now believe Johnshaven may be in Kincardine! I have a diary written by my great-grandfather Dr James RORIE. In it, he notes that his wife's great-grandfather was a manufacturer in Johnshaven, and also that his father before him was also from Johnshaven. From a Google search, I have found that a sailcloth works was set up in Johnshaven in 1790, and this would fit. My great-grandmother was Margaret BAXTER(1837-1925), of the Baxter Brothers manufacturing family of Dundee. One of her grandfathers was JOHN URQUHART, a mill manager, and his wife was Allison MANN. Their first known child was also John, born 1795, and they also had Elizabeth (mother of Margaret) born about 1809. I suspect that the URQUHART name may be the family from Johnshaven, but am not sure. Can anyone tell me where to find more information about the history of Johnshaven, particularly the industries, and of course if anyone had information that would place the Urquharts in Johnshaven that would be wonderful! My 4g grandfather George RORIE married Margaret (or Mary) STEWART 10 Feb 1775 in Marykirk. I have been unable to trace any further back than this although I think George came from the Brechin area. I wonder if anyone else knows anything about STEWARTS in the Marykirk area arund this time. Thank you Jane
