Jim, I agree that this is probably not our James Mather, although he could be pretty much anywhere if he and Elizabeth split up. I'm not sure where Elizabeth was living in 1851 but I'm pretty sure she is listed in Johnshaven in 1861 and of course died there in 1868. btw I just noticed James and Elizabeth's eldest child (Helen) working as a servant in a houshold in Benholm thanks to freecen. I had previously wondered if she was living with her father somewhere but apparently not and she was already put out to work. We will keep trying!
