    3. Hi Kincardine list. I believe I have made this request before but am reminded because of the current thread regarding meaning of names. I am trying to find out whether any records of estate management, especially those regarding tenants, might be archived anywhere. Specficially - James Low is listed on his children's birth records as `Tenant at Crawton'. Crawton is a tiny hamlet between Dunottar and Caterline (about three miles south of Stonehaven) and the two most likely candidates for owners of this land would be 1) The Earls Marischal, owners of Dunottar Castle, although they lost it following the 1705 rebellion only to get it back later and 2) Barclay of Urie. James Low died aged 49 in 1781, leaving a widow and eight children ranging from 14 years old to a babe in arms. I am trying to determine whether the widow and children would have been allowed to remain on the farm and work it or whether in fact they would have had to leave. Later records show that the oldest son's family were all born in Fettercairn, the town about ten miles away, where James Low's widow, Catherine Croll, was from. Does anyone know if these records exist? and if so, where might they be? Jennifer Guthrie Ryan
