While doing family research in the OPRs for Laurencekirk I came across The Bleachfield as a place of birth on several occasions. I later found in the Statistical Account of Scotland 1791- 1799 (which is on the internet) that one of the lairds at Laurencekirk had funded the creationof a bleachfield, circa 1780, and there were 17 employees. Does anyone know what a bleachfield is. I could hazard a guess that it might be something connected with the flax/linen industries, but I could be entirely wrong. While on the subject of the textile industry in the Mearns, I found the job description of lintmiller on a 1892 death certificate, and I would estimate the person was carrying out this trade circa 1840 - 1870. I think lint was raw cotton. Does anyone know what a lintmiller did. On a wider front I would be interested to hear from someone who knows a bit about the textile industries of the Mearns. Alan Moir
