Excuse me? Why do you think the Isobella who bore children in 1839 would have been too old to bear a child in 1850? What imbecile said that? (gosh, I hope it wasn't your mother or your husband!) My 4-g grandmother in Angus bore her first child in 1740 at roughly 26 years. She bore her last - the tenth -child at 45 and she lived until 80. My 3-g grandmother in Nova Scotis bore her first child in 1792 at age 22 and her last - also the tenth - at age 41 in 1811, living another 25 years. Women weren't wimps in those days .. . they didn't have epidurals or C-sections, and they didn't have either contraception or RU-235. Many died in childbirth and many lived long and fruitful (literally) lives. I can't say whether Isabella did or didn't take in a child of a relative and I won't interpret the records but I am certainly confused regarding your problem accepting the possibility that he was her child simply based on age. My advice is to accept it as written unless and until you find some real discrepancy in the records or some other indication that he was not her child. Keep on truckin' !
