Hello Listers Please can someone help with any information, however small, about these places or people (or the families that owned the Estates) mentioned in a Will. Most wonderful of all would be an 1861 census lookup :-) " I, William Matthewson residing at Laurencekirk assistant factor on the Estate of Hankerton and others in the Counties of kincardine and Forfar...." ..."make over to and in favour of Mrs Barbara Nicoll or Mathewson my mother, residing at Nester Braikie in the parish of Kinnell and County of Forfar...." The will was signed on 25/05/1863 and he died 26/04/1865. I am trying to help a good friend to crack her brick wall. Is it usual that the occupation of 'Factor' was a father ->son tradition? We are looking for a George Matthewson (Coachman) born c1821 somewhere in Scotland with a father William MATTHEWSON who was an estate manager & I hope that the William above could be his son. Many thanks Rosemary in Western Australia
Rosemary, The farm will be Haulkerton which is still in existence on the west side of Laurencekirk. Many of the local farmers still have records going back to the year dot, so it might be worthwhile contacting them.
