Thank you Ruth for confirming what I thought would be the case about the information shown in a census. Unfortunately I have a relative whose research is sloppy and inaccurate and this leads him to unwarranted conclusions !!! For Mary’s benefit I am researching the family of my great grandmother, Isabella Berry , who was the daughter of John Berry and Isabella Sim. Isabella was christened at Banchory Devenick in 1835. The 1841 Census shows the family living at a farm called “Braeside” at Banchory Devenick with the following members - John (30) farmer, Isabella (30) wife, Jane/Jean ( 8), Isabella (5), Catharine (9 months) and Euphemia Berry (60). The IGI records that Jane/Jean Berry was christened at Keithall and Kinkell in 1833 and that a later child, William, was christened at Banchory Devenick in 1842. Then, according to my aforementioned relative the family does not appear, at the Banchory Devenick location in the 1851 Census, but I would be grateful, Ruth, if you would check this for me. The only member of the family to be located in the 1851 census is Isabella (my ggm) who was then listed as a house servant(aged 16) on the farm of George Fowler. Since my relative has then jumped to the conclusion that the rest of the family must have emigrated to North America (!!!!) I am anxious to locate them ! (The 1881 Census lists a John and Isabella Berry at Kincardine O’ Neil, but this has been shown to be a different family as the wife’s maiden name was Walker) Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far.
