Colin , Which is a good name One of my grandsons is Colin Jones. I have printed out the information and I will dig back in my files. I think my James father was Robert. If we are all from Kincardine and ended up in Brechin we are most likely from the same bunch. I went to Scotland for 2 weeks in 2001. I was very lucky as I had a Grandmother from Brechin who filled my head with stories about when she was young and her trips back and forth from Brechin to New York City. Therefore I had good information. then on a Scottish chat line I met a wonderful woman born in Brechin now in CT. and she sent me more information so that when I went over I had names and addresses. The people were so wonderful to us. I am an Episcopal Chaplain and I got in touch with the Priest at the church they attended in 1888 and when we got there they had a tea for me and a cake that said Welcome Home Mary. It is something I will never forget. Then we went to the Brechin Cathedral and came around the corner to a huge stone that was my GGG Grandparents. I cried and my husband did not know what had happened but to me it was wonderful. They had died back in the 1860s. From the census I had the address of my GG grandparents and the people invited me to come sit on the stoop with them. Marykirk, Lauerancekirk and several other little towns in Kincardine are very small and the church yards are very old.. The tomb stones have not been keep up so reading them is hard. We were there in April and walked 12 church yards in the rain and cold wind. It is only about a 10 min drive from Angus to Kincardine. Little country roads. We rented a car as the train did not go where we wanted to go. My Scotch familys are Bruce, Cooper , Duncan, Burness, Low and so many more. On the Burness side my GGGG GRandmother Helen Burness was a cousin to Robert Burns the poet who was born Robert Burness in Kincardine. I belong to the Scottish Clans of N Tex and I carry the Bruce Clan colors and wear the Bruce Clan Plaid. I see you are in Canada and I am in North , TX so we are far apart. Good luck with your search. I am searching Scottish Welsh English and French Huguenot. Mary Jones
Hi Mary, I cannot go back as far as you have gone however, there are some interesting similarities, enough to send this ancestor tree and ask you if any of these Low's show up in your tree. I gather from your message that you have been to Marykirk or vicinity if you sat on the porch of the 1880's. I too would love to do such but I must find some living relatives to visit. Can't converse much with the ones I have found in the churchyards. ! Here is my LOW ancestry in Scotland; Agnes Low, b1818, married Henry Webster, b 1817, Dec 15, 1843 Agnes Low was the daughter of John Low b 1781and Janet Jolly 1782; D. Aug 15, 1868 in Brechin at home of son James; John Low was the son of James Low and Isabel Mathers ; Hope we can hook something up here ! Best wishes, COLIN MILLS, B.C. Canada
Your welcome I also have several Low in the family. Mine are from Marykirk in Kincardine not far from Edzell. Elizabeth Low born in March of 1748 and her father John Low born June 1716. That side of my family all moved to Brechin where I was lucky to find all their graves in the cathdual Kirk yard. I even got to sit on the porch of their home in 1880's. If you ever find you family connection that way let me know. Mary

Hi Jill, Would you do me a favor and see if there are any WEBSTERS or LOW (LOWE) in the Edzell Parish area of Scotland in your 1881 cencus. My WEBSTERS immigrated to County Carlow, Ireland in about 1856 but I have never been able to find out specifically where they came from. One son, Henry Low Webster was born in Edzell in 1848 ---------however, there may have been othres remaining in that area. Your help will be appreciated. Colin Mills, Kamloops, B.C. Hi Carol, I have one family from Laurencekirk: On 4 Jan 1845 Laurencekirk, John WATT (b. Abt 1818 Bervie) married Margaret TOUGH (b. Abt 1826 Fordoun parish) and, according to the IGI, they had the following children all born Laurencekirk: George 29 Jul 1849 David 16 Sep 1851 Margaret 14 Dec 1853 Alexander 23 Feb 1858 William 13 Jan 1861 (m. Ann SCORGIE, a 1st cousin of mine, about 1886) Marianne Jane 7 Apr 1864 James 16 Nov 1865 Ken Coull
Hi, Is anyone researching WATT from Laurencekirk ? TIA, Carol.
Hi Gordon, No, the index pre-1855 gravestone inscriptions in Kincardineshire prepared by Alison Mitchell in 1986 is not on line. I search the paper copy and key in the relevant Gravestone Inscriptions. The publication is still available from the Scottish Genealogy Society for 16 pounds Sterling. You can check it out at: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Kincardineshire_MI.html In this publication, there are GER(R)ARDs in Banchory Devenick Kirkyard (3); Durris Kirkyard (1); Fetteresso Kirkyard (10); Cowie Kirkyard (1); Old Templars' Park, Maryculter (1); and Upper St. Cyrus (2). Please contact me off line if you want any or all of these. My e-mail address can be found at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kcoull&I11.x=31&I11.y=9 Ken
Hello Listers Does anyone have the 1881 census for Scotland (Kincardineshire/Aberdeenshire) & would look for these people please? Alexander MATHEWSON aged about 63, (?tenant in Mansefield) & his wife Margaret MATHEWSON aged about 35. Also Janet MATHEWSON aged about 73. (Alexander & Margaret were married in Laurencekirk & buried in Fetteresso Kirkyard, so I guess they'd be found somewhere in those areas.) Thankyou Rosemary in Western Australia
