    1. MILNE/DEAS(Deis/Deason) FORBES
    2. Hello listers I generally use the Angus site but I hope to make connections here. I am looking for connections to the following people and families. The original couple is as follows: THOMAS MILNE: Born circa 1784 Brechin. The L.D.S. record him as Thomas Mill(IGI) Originally a farm labourer -although in 1815 (christening records)he is recorded as a timber yard worker He was married 3/11/1809 at Brechin to a Jean Deas (Jane is shown on her sons death certificate) JANE DEAS : Born circa 1788 . Their is no Deas in the IGI about this date. However there is a Jane Deis b. 1786 at Brechin. She is also mentioned as Deason Interestingly there is a Jane Deas(widow) recorded at Dun in the 1861 census and as a number of Jane's family worked there about this time then she may have reverted to her maiden name . .She is not shown in the 1871 census .There is no mention of her husband.Unfortunately I cant find records on Thomas Milne. Their children were all born in Brechin. Mary Milne b. 18/8/1810 Mary Milne b. 16/12 1811 James Milne b. 19/6/1815 Betty Milne b. 13/2/1815 John Milne b. 7/5/1816 John Milne married Jane (Jean) FORBES b. circa 1816at Farnell. He was a farm servant at his marriage but died on the railways at Arbroath His son was james Milne who was the goalkeeper for Arbroath in the famous Bon Accord win in 1886 Marriage 26/5/139 at Kincardine St Cyrus Children:Christina Milne b.1842,DUN Mary Milne b. 1845, Aberlemno Jean Milne b. 2. Cathy Purcell
    3. Hello to the list, Just thought I'd post a couple of interests from the area which have been mentioned before (eg by Lisa) but I have not been able to connect. I have John MITCHELL and Agnes MAVOR marrying on 11 Jan 1794 and then proceeding to have 7 children including Margaret (chr 21 Apr 1804) in Drumoak. Their other children were: Jean chr 7 Nov 1794 George chr 14 Apr 1796 James chr 3 Apr 1798 Robert chr 21 May 1800 Christian chr 27 Jun 1802 Joseph chr 3 Apr 1807 (he went to the USA) There was an Agnes MAVOR chr in Banchory-Devenick on 19 Apr 1766, child of Andrew and Jean LEIPER but this would make Agnes 50 when she had her last child to John MITCHELL. Also none of the 4 sons was called Andrew. I cannot see another Agnes in the county but I am well aware this does not mean there wasn't one!!! Does anyone else connect to this family or can shed any light on this? Regards, Cathy in coastal Queensland, Australia

    3. Jim, I agree that this is probably not our James Mather, although he could be pretty much anywhere if he and Elizabeth split up. I'm not sure where Elizabeth was living in 1851 but I'm pretty sure she is listed in Johnshaven in 1861 and of course died there in 1868. btw I just noticed James and Elizabeth's eldest child (Helen) working as a servant in a houshold in Benholm thanks to freecen. I had previously wondered if she was living with her father somewhere but apparently not and she was already put out to work. We will keep trying! 3. Hi Grant, As you probably know there is a James Mather on the 1841 census in St Cyrus. He is probably the same one whose obituary appeared in the Montrose paper because he has both a wife (Jane) and a servant! Not our man I guess. There is also a James Mather in Edzell in 1841 working as an agric. labourer who seems to be on his own. Keep digging. Yours Jim

    3. Hi Tony, Sorry to say that the Montrose papers are only available at Montrose library on microfiche. I mainly only took down the Johnshaven deaths as that was my main area of interest so cannot say whether your David was mentioned or not. Most of the death's reported are from well-to-do families. So I never found what I was looking for but thought I'd note some names down that were mentioned pre-1855 in the hopes that someone could use them. I've no plans to return to Montrose library in the near future but will print out your message and put it in my genealogy folder and hopefully get this done next time I am there if still required. However, most likely there wouldn't be much additional information to what you have if. 3. Hi Grant Greetings from Sydney, Australia. I have an ancestor David Smith who died at Luthermuir in Marykirk on 15 August 1853 (from Army Pension record). He also fought at the siege of Badajoz, having joined the Royal Horse Artillery Drivers in 1804. I suspect that his death too would be mentioned in a Montrose newspaper. Are these newspapers available for researching or do you have to go to Montrose? Alternately, can anyone do a look up? 3. Ain't it the way.
