This is my first query on the John Melvin family, who lived in Nigg, Kincardineshire, then Peterculter, Aberdeenshire. James b. 1858: Ann b. 1859: Elizabeth b.1861: Martha b. 1863: Mary b. 1865: Jean b. 1867: George Gerrie b. 1869: Robert Lumsden b. 1871: Alexander Kelly b. 1873. John and Margaret Lumsden Melvin are buried in St. Peter's Kirkyard in Peterculter as well as son, John Melvin and wife Ann Jane Drum. I welcome any information on the above families...Melvin, Lumsden, Drum. Thanks, Mary B. White in Maryland
I have James ADAM and Margaret GRAHAM who married approx. 1790. Their first six children were born in Laurencekirk, Kincardine and the other ten in Fordoun, Kincardine. I would like to find out where and when James and Margaret were born, and also when they married. Has anyone any connection to this family please? Doreen

Hello Kincardine List, Is Brechin still in Kincardineshire or another shire? Thanks for any guidance. Christina C.
First of all a comment about the surname Silver. I have poured over the census and OPRs of quite a few of the Mearns parishes and Silver was (and still is) a fairly common name in these parts, in particular Laurencekirk and Fordoun. However I have not taken any particular interest in it as it does not enter my "tree". You can find the Statistical Accounts at http://edina.ed.ac.uk/index.shtml. Then, in the top right hand corner of the screen select Statistical Accounts of Scotland from the pull down menu, and login (it is free). Then you select the county or parish you want and either the 1791-99 Accounts or the 1845 Accounts. I don't think the site is complete yet for all parishes in respect of all the earlier Accounts but the Mearns seemed to be complete. The site is interesting if you are interested in the life and times of the inhabitants, but it is of very limited use from a genealogical standpoint because you do not get names apart from a few local lairds and ministers. Note that in these accounts the letter "s" in the middle of words is written with the old symbol which is closely akin to "f". You soon get used to it. Please believe me when I assure you that were were no cafes in Laurencekirk in the 18th century. As an aside, I had just come to the end of one account, Fordoun I think, when the next page showed the start of the account for the parish of Uig. Uig is in Lewis and I thought it might be interesting to find out what was going on in Gaeldom in this era. Now at the end of each account there is a section headed Miscellaneous Observations. Most reporters (invariably the minister of the established church) would here record items which were unique to the parish, e.g.in relation to drought, disease or something of such nature. The minister at Uig however evidently thought that some anatomical statistics were important for posterity when he recorded (page 289) " Very near the manse there lives a woman, who has four distinct breasts or mammae. She has several stout healthy children and suckled each of them, and likewise one of the minister's children. She has nipples and milk in each of the four breasts, the two upper are situated immediatley under the armpits, and being distended with milk, are very troublesome to her for the first two or thee months after delivery. Such a lusas naturae is very uncommon." The account does not elobarate on how the minister organised or conducted such a detailed survey of his flock. I am researching the family name of Silver and everything I do comes up blank. Maybe this could be of some help to me. If anyone out there has any info re family name SILVER I would very much appreciate anything at all. There was a large family of Silvers in St Cyrus from around 1860 and before in Laurencekirk and surrounds. I believe two of male member of the Family emigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. Also two female members left Scotland for New York around the same time. Any help at all would be very much appreciated. Frances
Hi everyone, If you have something to post to the list of a non-genealogy nature, please contact me first. Subscribers who post virus warnings (and they are usually asked to forward to everyone in their address book) should send to me first. Most of these warnings are a hoax and are sent unneccessarily. Although my input into this list is very low-key, if you have any problems or comments, feel free to contact me. Cheers Sue Lund List admin [email protected]

While doing family research in the OPRs for Laurencekirk I came across The Bleachfield as a place of birth on several occasions. I later found in the Statistical Account of Scotland 1791- 1799 (which is on the internet) that one of the lairds at Laurencekirk had funded the creationof a bleachfield, circa 1780, and there were 17 employees. Does anyone know what a bleachfield is. I could hazard a guess that it might be something connected with the flax/linen industries, but I could be entirely wrong. While on the subject of the textile industry in the Mearns, I found the job description of lintmiller on a 1892 death certificate, and I would estimate the person was carrying out this trade circa 1840 - 1870. I think lint was raw cotton. Does anyone know what a lintmiller did. On a wider front I would be interested to hear from someone who knows a bit about the textile industries of the Mearns. Alan Moir
Hi, all, Gees, folks, I apologize for my previous post! I have the Stirlingshire list and web page PLUS the Kincardineshire web page and when this person spammed the lists, I accidentally posted my reply to your list. Please accept my humblest apologies.... Red faced, Peggy
Folks, This is WITHOUT the listowner's permission.... this is obviously a "plug" for an anti-virus program. I do not permit this type of post on this list, as this is a list for genealogy only. All persons that do this type of thing end up on the reject list, hope all of you understand why. Now, let's continue on with genealogy! With the kind permission of the list owners or administrators. This is a one time issuance of a warning. Listers: I have just downloaded my latest copy of PC-cillin's anti-virus pattern file #899. Hi everyone, Just a short note to tell you I have changed internet provider, hence new e-mail address. Having been inquiring previously re: William FINCHER (born England), married in Nigg, Kincardine Scotland to Barbara GARDEN, 8th April 1826, immigrated to Australia 1849. Also Isabella WATT married Alexander WATT 20th June, 1851, Old Machar, Aberdeen. I can only find one son on the I.G.I. John WATT christened 5th February, 1854, Old Machar, Aberdeen. At the moment I am ploughing though the 1851 census (on the microfilm reader that obviously comes from the same period!) trying to find Isabella FINCHER. It is a slow process and haven't come across her as yet. However, as happens, other little things have taken my interest. Can anyone tell me what a women who is obviously well off, either a widow or a spinster (I have found three, all 40 years or over), has servants and has her occupation listed as what I originally wrote as "Assistant", but realised there were too many letters and also it didn't really make much sense. The film was a little difficult to read, but this was quite clear I just couldn't make out the word. It starts with A and ends with T. I imagine it is to do with some inherited wealth, but I'm guessing. Hoping someone on the list can help. Have been jotting down FRASERS, ALLANS, FORBES AND GARDENS, but haven't got too far yet. Regards, Rhonda Thompson, Sydney, Australia
There is a farm about 3 miles or so out of Stonehaven called Blairs.
Hello Janet, last time I looked at that film, some time back, it was not indexed. Would be great if you have the time and effort to do it, I most certainly would be interested. Ruth Edwards
The nearest I can find is Blairno which lies west of Edzell and is in the parish of Lethnot & Navar, Angus county. It is marked on the late 1800s map and also on the current OS map. Was a farm at time of 1881 census.
Hi all, I am about to order the film of the 1841 census for part of Kincardine (parishes 256-264, icluding in particular Garvock). Does anyone know whether and index to this has been made? If not, I am currently entertaining the idea of giving it (or part of it) a go. Does any one have any suggestions? Also, as usual (but a first on this list) I am offering to do lookups for people, bearing in mind that i suspect there is no index (yet!). So ask away, and I'll see what I can do. best wishes Janet Connochie Christchurch, NZ
Does anyone know where this might be. It might be a farm or a house in Kincardine, I think Glenbervie Alastair Dallas
Heather Mains - the main farm on an estate cultivated by or for the proprietor strath - a river valley muir - rough, uncultivated land - moor mills in Kincardineshire would usually have been water powered for grinding grain to flour I don't know of a site for place name meanings like the above. However, for very large scale (6inch = 1mile) 19th century maps try http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.htm I find the older version of this site accessible by link from the above address to be more useful. It can also be accessed direct at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldSite/index.htm Malcolm
