    1. 1861 Census Lookup for LAW family
    2. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone who may have access to the 1861 census could do a lookup for me. This is all I have on this family. I found the marriage date for Alexander and Margaret and the names of some of their children on the IGI site. The dates listed below are christening dates, not birthdates. I'm hoping to find more children and any other helpful information that may be on the census. ALEXANDER LAW m: MARGARET WATT 13 Nov 1836 Old Meldrum, Aberdeen Children: WILLIAM c: 25 Mar 1838 in Echt, Aberdeen JANET c: 25 Oct 1840 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen JESSIE b: abt. 1842 in Maryculter, Aberdeen (my direct ancestor who married JOSEPH THOMSON in Fintray on 16 Jan 1863) THOMAS c: 9 Feb 1844 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen ELSPETH c: 30 Sept 1849 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen DAVID c: 6 July 1855 in Fintray, Aberdeen Would also love to hear from anyone who may think they have a connection to this family. 2. Lyndall
    3. Hello everyone, I am new to this list as I recently learnt that my Angus people were originally from Kincardine. I have Charles WILSON, baptised 19 June 1752, Fordoun (probably son of James WILSON & Anna WALKER) who married Christian EDDIE, baptised 1 July 1753, Kineff & Caterline (daughter of David EDDIE & Christian MANSEY), on 4 January 1777, Bervie. By 1779, when their first child was baptised, Charles & Christian were living in Aberlemno, Angus. Is anyone else researching these people? If so, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, Lyndall Canberra, Oz

    3. Dear Bob, I write to you as there were two names that interested me in your email to Charlie. First of all, my Dad's father had the name Shand in his family, and secondly my Dad's mother was a Duthie. Dad's grandmother was Christina Helen Shand who was born in 1861 in Huntly, Aberdeen. Her parents were George Shand (master baker born c 1830) and Isabella Conn (born c1835). George's parents were James Shand (born c1801 in Gartly) and Helen Walker, and James parents were William Shand (crofter) and Janet Allan. My 5x great grandparents were Robert Shand and Elspeth Watt who were married in 1781. Do you see any connection there with your Shand family? - Dad always referred to them as "the Shands of Huntly". Secondly, Dad's mother was Mary Duthie (born 1897 in Aberdeen). She died when my Dad was only 9 so there is little oral history which has come down to us. Mary Duthie's parents were James Duthie (an engine driver born 1868 in Dunottar) and Christina Helen Scott Urquhart. James Duthie's parents were John Duthie (born 1837 in Dunottar) and Ann Eddie Hill. John Duthie's parents were James Duthie and Jane Dunbar. Can you see any connection with your Duthie research? 1. WHO IS ISABELLA FINCHER/WATT?
    2. Rhonda Thompson
    3. Hi everyone, A few weeks ago I posted a query re William FINCHER born about 1800 in England, married to Barbara GARDEN 8th April, 1826, Nigg Kincardine and immigrated to Australia 1849. He had nine children, all born in the Newhills and Old Machar areas. I also posted a query re Isabella FINCHER who married Alexander WATT 20th June, 1851 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. I can only find one son to this couple John WATT christened 5th February, 1854, Old Machar, Aberdeen. I have been ploughing through the 1851 census for Old Machar in search of Isabella FINCHER and I found her. But thoughtlessly (I think) she was not born in England. She claims she was born in Old Meldrum. The entry was in Lower Middlefield: Lucy INGLES Unmarried 60 Proprietor of Houses Mains, Forfarshire Isabella FINCHER Servant Unmarried 30 House Servant Old Meldrum, Aberdeen Lucy INGLES is not listed as the head. That column is blank. Living right next door is the TAYLOR family. James TAYLOR a farmer of 73 acres, employing 3 labourers. One of the labourers is Alexander WATT, Servant, Unmarried, aged 40, Farm Labourer, Cairnie, Aberdeenshire. Between 1800 and 1855 I have only found two FINCHERs. William FINCHER (and, of course, his family) and Isabella FINCHER, born around 1821. She does not appear with his family in the 1841 census and the name Isabella does not appear in the next couple of generations in Australia. (They were very keen on renaming their children after their parents and siblings). I am a broken woman!!! I thought Isabella FINCHER would lead me to William FINCHER. Instead I now have a second mystery. I would appreciate any ideas as to why a girl with the surname FINCHER would be born in Old Meldrum where there are no other families with the same surname. Anyone with any interest in the surnames WATT, GARDEN or HILL feel free to contact me and I can give you what I have transcribed from the 1851 Old Machar census. Also some ALLANs and FRASERs. Have also copied from the Nigg, Kincardine Parish Register deaths from around 1800 for GARDEN, ALLAN, and a few FRASERs. These are probably available elsewhere, but may help someone from overseas, like myself. On the bright side I have been reading the 1845 Statistical Accounts of Scotland for Nigg, Old Machar and Newhills (online). They make fascinating reading and give you an understanding of your ancestors' lives and living conditions. Someone please help me!!! (Apologies to those who have to read this three times). Regards, Rhonda Thompson, Sydney, Australia

    1. RE: Banchory Devenick
    2. Bob Shand
    3. Charlie, you asked about Banchory Devenick earlier today, the logic is the same as the USA but the scale is rather smaller. Scotland - total population about 5 million, so smaller pop than the average US state Kincardineshire - old style county (replaced by much bigger Regions in the 1970's). Size varies but Kincardineshire was one of the smaller Scottish counties, I'd guess a population of around 100,000 to 200,000. Banchory Devenick - a parish, approx. 25 square miles, population maybe 20,000 now but much less in the 19th century. The coastal section including the village of Portlethen is effectively a suburb of Aberdeen, a City of 200,000 nowadays. The north boundary is the River Dee. The "village" of Banchory Devenick, at the centre of the parish, is spread over a rural area with a primary school, church, several houses of various sizes and is still largely a farming community. Probably no more than a few hundred of the population would use Banchory Devenick in their postal address. I was there last weekend, visiting the old kirkyard where some of my ancestors are buried (John Duncan, farmer in Broadgreens, born around 1765, died 1823, was my gt gt gt gt grandfather). Broadgreens is still there and the whole area looks good and green and prosperous. There is also a Banchory Ternan (or just Banchory nowadays) which is a small town 15 miles up the river Dee and also in Kincardineshire. Sorry, no knowledge of the Hunters though. All figures above are guesses only. best wishes Bob Shand Gartocharn, Loch Lomond, Scotland surname interests in Kincardine: Duncan, Craig, Thomson, Duthie, Main, Mowat, Philp > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [SMTP:[email protected]] > Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 4:31 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: HUNTER > > First post on this list.
